In short
The Upapada, or Upa Pada, is the Bhava pada of the house that follows the Lagna. BPHS Ch. 30 reads partnership and family from it. Because the commentators disagree on which house that is, this app follows the reading the translator reports: the 12th house's pada for an odd rising sign and the 2nd house's for an even one.
What the term means
The Upapada is one particular Bhava pada: the pada of the house BPHS calls the one "following the natal Lagn". It is found with the same count as every pada, from the house to its lord and the same distance again, with the same two exceptions. Classically it is read for partnership and family life, and this app presents it in those terms.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 30 Sl. 1-6 introduces the Upa Pad, "also called Gaun Pad", and reads benefic association with it as happiness from spouse and progeny. The translator's note says there are "more than two views" on which house is meant. The sloka's word, Anuchar, is normally taken as the 12th house, while other Jaimini commentaries take the 12th for an odd rising sign and the 2nd for an even one. The rest of the chapter is a run of spouse-affliction predictions.
How this app uses it
- Odd rising sign (Aries, Gemini, Leo and so on): the pada of the 12th house (A12). Even rising sign: the pada of the 2nd house (A2).
- Only the determination in Sl. 1-6 is implemented. The later slokas, with their gendered and death-timing predictions, are left out entirely.
- The compatibility engine uses the Upapada for its Jaimini partnership reading, in place of a Darakaraka, which this app does not assign.
- It needs an Ascendant, so a birth time.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Pisces rises, an even sign, so the Upapada comes from the 2nd house, Aries. Its lord Mars is in Aquarius, the 11th sign counting from Aries as the first; the 11th sign counting from Aquarius in the same way is Sagittarius. The Upapada is Sagittarius, the 10th house.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
