In short
The Darakaraka is the chara karaka for the spouse, called Stri Karak in the corpus translation of BPHS Ch. 32, where it is the eighth and last name in the ranking by degree. This app ranks seven classical grahas into the first seven roles, so it does not assign a Darakaraka; its Jaimini spouse reading comes from the Upa Pada instead.
What the term means
The Darakaraka, or Dara Karaka, is the chara karaka that signifies the spouse; this app's own engine notes call it the Jaimini spouse significator. Like the other chara karakas it is chosen by degree: it is the graha furthest down the ranking, the one that has travelled least through its sign among those ranked.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17 lists eight chara karakas in order: Atma, Amatya, Bhratru, Matru, Pitru, Putr, Gnati and Stri Karak. Stri Karak is the spouse role; the name Darakaraka does not appear in the corpus texts searched. Eight roles need eight grahas, and Sl. 1-2 record that some include Rahu. The same chapter records a second view, that the Matru and Putr Karak are one, which frees the seventh graha for the spouse role. Sl. 18-21 separately give constant significators for relatives, a different scheme.
How this app uses it
- The engine ranks the seven classical grahas into seven roles, Atma to Gnati Karaka, and stops there. No graha is labelled Darakaraka.
- Including Rahu, or merging two roles, would change an existing domain table; the engine's notes record that choice as deliberate.
- The compatibility engine therefore takes its Jaimini spouse reading from the Upa Pada, which is computed, rather than improvising a Darakaraka.
- Under the merged Matru/Putr reading, the graha this app lists as Gnati Karaka would be the spouse significator; the degrees, and so the ranking, are the same either way.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the lowest of the seven ranked grahas is Jupiter at Capricorn 2.09, listed as Gnati Karaka. Software that applies the merged Matru/Putr reading would call Jupiter the Darakaraka for this chart; this app does not.
