In short

The Amatyakaraka, or Amatya Karaka, is the graha with the second-highest degree in its sign, the next after the Atmakaraka among the chara karakas. BPHS Ch. 32 names it and casts it as the minister to the Atma Karaka's king. This app lists it second in the Char Karakas calculator, with the theme career and counsel.

What the term means

Amatya is the minister or counsellor of a king. The Amatyakaraka is the second of the chara karakas: of the seven classical grahas, the one with the second-highest degree in its sign, just behind the Atmakaraka. Like every chara karaka it is assigned by degree, so a different graha holds it in different charts.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17 names it: the graha next to the Atma Karak in longitude. Sl. 9-12 frame the order with a royal image, saying that just as a minister cannot act against the king, the other karakas cannot override the Atma Karak. Ch. 40, on yogas for royal association, reads the Amatya Karak and the sign lord it sits in for service in a king's court. Ch. 33 also allows the worship reading of the 12th from the Karakamsa to be drawn from the 6th Navamsa counted from the Amatya Karak's Navamsa.

How this app uses it

  • It is the second line of the Char Karakas list, labelled with the theme career and counsel.
  • It is found by sorting the seven classical grahas by degree in sign; Rahu is not ranked.
  • It does not compute the Ch. 40 royal-association yogas or the 6th-from-Amatya Navamsa reading.
  • The career-and-money engine uses it as one of its career signifiers, beside the 10th lord, the grahas in the 10th, the lord of the Dashamsa Ascendant and the strongest graha by Shad Bala. Its fixed weight there (2) equals the Dashamsa lord's and sits below the 10th lord's (3) and the 10th-house occupants' (2.5).

A small illustration

For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Mars at Aquarius 25.40 is the Atmakaraka and Venus at Aquarius 22.47 is the Amatyakaraka, both in the same sign and a little under three degrees apart. Venus's Navamsa sign in that chart is Aries.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
