In short

The Dashamsa, or D10, is the divisional chart made by cutting each sign into ten parts of 3 degrees. BPHS counts them from the sign itself for an odd sign and from its 9th for an even sign, and reads "power (and position)" from it. This app computes it and uses the lord of the D10 Ascendant as one input to its career reading.

What the term means

Dashamsa means "tenth part". It is the varga made by cutting each 30-degree sign into ten parts of 3 degrees and giving each part a sign. Because BPHS ties it to power and position, this app treats it as the career varga, read beside the 10th house of the birth chart rather than in place of it.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 13-14 gives the count: from the same sign for an odd sign, from the 9th sign for an even sign, ten parts of 3 degrees each, presided over by the ten guardians of the directions (Indra, Agni, Yama and the rest), in reverse order for an even sign. Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns it "power (and position)". Ch. 7 Sl. 20 adds the Dashamsa, Shodashamsa and Shashtiamsa to the seven-chart Sapt Varg to form the ten-chart Dasha Varg.

How this app uses it

  • The part is the degree within the sign divided by 3, rounded down. An odd sign starts the count from itself, an even sign from its 9th, and the count moves forward one sign per part.
  • The career and money calculator takes the lord of the D10 Ascendant as one of its career signifiers, weighted 2, beside the 10th lord (3), planets in the 10th (2.5) and the Amatya Karaka (2).
  • The D10 is one of sixteen placements graded in Vimshopaka bala (weight 0.5 of 20). Same-sign D1 and D10 is flagged vargottama.
  • D10 houses and the D10 Ascendant exist only when the birth time is known.

A small illustration

In the chart for 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Sun is at Capricorn 5.46. Capricorn is even, so the count starts at its 9th sign, Virgo; 5.46 degrees is the second part, which lands on Libra. The Moon at Sagittarius 12.66 is in an odd sign and the fifth part, four signs on from Sagittarius: Aries. The Ascendant, Pisces 23.04, gives a D10 Ascendant in Gemini.

A narrow window

A 3-degree part is narrow, so the D10 Ascendant can move with a small error in the birth time. The essay on unknown birth times works through how fast the divisional ascendants change.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
