In short
Argala is the "intervention" grahas make in a house from the 2nd, 4th, 11th and 5th places counted from it. Each is countered by grahas in the 12th, 10th, 3rd and 9th respectively. BPHS Ch. 31 sets out the rule; this app tests every house by counting the seven classical grahas on each side.
What the term means
BPHS Ch. 31 is titled "Argala, or Intervention from Grahas", and its translator notes that the Sanskrit word is used figuratively for an impediment. In the chart it means intervention: grahas in certain places counted from a house step in on that house's affairs. Grahas in the matching opposite places can block the intervention, which is called obstruction (virodha argala).
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9: grahas in the 4th, 2nd and 11th from a house or graha cause argala, and those in the 10th, 12th and 3rd obstruct it; the 5th is also an argala place, countered from the 9th. The argala prevails if its graha is stronger or more numerous than the obstructors. Three or more malefics in the 3rd form Vipreet Argala, Rahu and Ketu are counted in reverse, and Sl. 10 adds a rule by quarters of a sign. Sl. 11-17 give an effect for each house, and Sl. 18 says unobstructed argala on the 1st, 5th and 9th marks one fortunate.
How this app uses it
- Four pairs are tested for every house: 2nd against 12th, 4th against 10th, 11th against 3rd, 5th against 9th.
- A pair gives unobstructed argala when more of the seven classical grahas sit in the argala house than in its obstruction house. A house has argala if any one pair does.
- Deliberately left out: the strength comparison, the quarter rule, Vipreet Argala and the reversal for Rahu and Ketu, which are not counted at all.
- Unobstructed argala on the 1st, 5th and 9th together is reported as Argala Raj Yoga. Houses are whole-sign, so a birth time is needed.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi (Pisces rising), take the 10th house. The 11th, which is the 2nd from it, holds the Sun and Jupiter; the 9th, the 12th from it, holds Saturn. Two against one, so the 10th has unobstructed argala. Across the chart the engine finds it on ten houses, all but the 3rd and 4th, and reports Argala Raj Yoga.

Which houses carry unobstructed Argala, decided by how many grahas sit on each side.
What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
