In short
Virodha argala is the obstruction of an argala. Grahas in the 12th, 10th, 3rd and 9th from a house counter the intervention made from the 2nd, 4th, 11th and 5th. BPHS Ch. 31 calls it obstruction; this app treats an argala as blocked when its obstruction house holds as many classical grahas or more.
What the term means
Virodha argala is the name used for the obstruction of an argala. An argala is the intervention grahas make in a house from the 2nd, 4th, 11th or 5th place from it. Its obstruction comes from the paired place on the other side: the 12th blocks the 2nd, the 10th blocks the 4th, the 3rd blocks the 11th, and the 9th blocks the 5th. Each pair sits the same distance either side of the house.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9 names the obstructors (the 10th, 12th and 3rd, with the 9th countering the 5th) and says an unobstructed argala "will be fruitful" while an obstructed one goes astray. The argala wins if its graha is stronger than the obstructor, or if the argala grahas outnumber the obstructing ones. Sl. 10 refines it by quarters of a sign. The translator also records a view that counts obstruction from the argala place itself, and rejects it. The corpus translation uses the English word "obstruction"; the Sanskrit "virodha" does not appear in the corpus texts searched.
How this app uses it
- Each of the four pairs is compared by count of the seven classical grahas: argala stands only if the argala house holds more of them than the obstruction house.
- A tie counts as obstruction, and so does an empty pair: with no grahas on either side there is nothing to intervene.
- Strength comparison, the quarter rule and the reversal for Rahu and Ketu are not applied; the nodes are not counted.
- A house shows as unobstructed if any one of its four pairs survives.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, take the 11th house. Mars and Venus in the 12th (its 2nd) would intervene, but the Moon and Mercury in the 10th (its 12th) match them two for two, so that argala is obstructed. Saturn in the 9th (its 11th) faces an empty 1st (its 3rd) and stands, so the 11th still shows as unobstructed.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
