In short
A sthira rashi is a fixed sign: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius, the second of every three signs in BPHS's repeating order. This app uses the label to start a fixed sign's Navamsa count from its 9th sign, to set rashi drishti, to put the Badhaka in the 9th house for a fixed Ascendant, and to detect Musala Yoga.
What the term means
Sthira means "steady" or "fixed". The sthira rashis are the four fixed signs: Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika and Kumbha. Each follows a movable sign and precedes a dual one. In the engine they carry the label "fixed".
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5 sets the order movable, fixed, dual, and Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 20-21 gives the Sanskrit name "Sthira (Fixed, Immovable)". BPHS counts a fixed sign's Navansh from the 9th sign (Ch. 6 Sl. 12), has it aspect the three movable signs except the one next to it (Ch. 8 Sl. 1-3), and calls all grahas in fixed signs Musala Yog (Ch. 35 Sl. 7). Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 13 makes the 5th Navamsa of a fixed sign Vargottama. BPHS states the Badhak rule only for movable signs (Ch. 50 Sl. 20-21); for a fixed Ascendant, the 9th is named by Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. 1, p. 115), a modern book in this site's library. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 168-169 gives fixed signs 8 years in the Sthir Dasha, which this app does not compute.
How this app uses it
- Navamsa: the count starts 8 signs on - Taurus from Capricorn, Leo from Aries, Scorpio from Cancer, Aquarius from Libra - so it returns to the sign itself in the 5th part, the vargottama part Saravali names.
- Rashi drishti: Taurus aspects Cancer, Libra and Capricorn; Leo aspects Aries, Libra and Capricorn; Scorpio aspects Aries, Cancer and Capricorn; Aquarius aspects Aries, Cancer and Libra.
- Badhaka: the 9th house for a fixed Ascendant. The code cites the modern source for it and says BPHS is silent.
- Yogas: all seven grahas in fixed signs is reported as Musala Yoga.
- Other uses: the D16 and D45 counts start from Leo for a fixed sign and the D20 from Sagittarius; the Chara Dasha's tie-break ranks fixed above movable and below dual.
