In short

Kumbha is the Sanskrit name for Aquarius, the eleventh sign of the sidereal zodiac, covering 300 to 330 degrees. In this app it is ruled by Saturn and labelled fixed, Air and odd; those labels set its Navamsa count, rashi drishti and Hora halves.

What the term means

Kumbha is the Sanskrit name for Aquarius, the eleventh of the twelve rashis: the 30 degrees of sidereal longitude from 300 to 330. The engine's sign list calls it Aquarius, and its list of Sanskrit names Kumbha. It holds the last two padas of Dhanishta, all of Shatabhisha and the first three padas of Purva Bhadrapada. This entry covers the name and how the engine handles it; the reading of the sign is on the Aquarius (Kumbha Rashi) page.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 3 names Kumbh eleventh, and Sl. 4 makes it the ankles of Kaal Purush (a symbolic mapping, not medical advice). By Sl. 5 it is fixed, malefic and male. Sl. 21-21½ describe a man holding a pot, deep-brown, biped, very strong in daytime, resorting to deep water, "airy", rising with its head, tamasic, of the West, with Sani as its lord. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 give Sani the same arrangement here that the Sun has in Simh. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39½ makes Kumbh Rahu's own sign. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 4 draws the same pot-bearer, and Sl. 24 agrees on a day sign rising with its head. No graha of the seven has its exaltation or fall here.

How this app uses it

  • Lord: SIGN_LORDS gives Kumbha to Shani (Saturn). In the Chara Dasha it has a second lord, Rahu, and the engine counts to the stronger of the two.
  • Quality: MODALITY_BY_SIGN marks it fixed (sthira). That sets its Navamsa count to start from Libra, its rashi drishti onto Aries, Cancer and Libra, and, when it rises, a Badhaka house in the 9th.
  • Element: the engine's element table counts it Air, which feeds the chart's dominant-element count and, when it holds the 10th house, the career reading.
  • Parity: as an odd sign, its first 15 degrees are the Sun's Hora (D2) and its last 15 the Moon's. The Chara Dasha reads the Pad (footedness) instead, and puts Aquarius in an even Pad although it is an odd sign.
  • Dignity: for Saturn, dignityOf() returns Moolatrikona from 0 to 20 degrees and Own sign after. No graha is exalted or debilitated here.
