What the term means
Makara is the Sanskrit name for Capricorn, the tenth of the twelve rashis: the 30 degrees of sidereal longitude from 270 to 300. The engine's sign list calls it Capricorn, and its list of Sanskrit names Makara. It holds the last three padas of Uttara Ashadha, all of Shravana and the first two padas of Dhanishta. Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 3 names Makar tenth, and Sl. 4 makes it the knees of Kaal Purush (a symbolic mapping, not medical advice). By Sl. 5 it is movable, benefic and female. Sl. 19-20 describe it as lorded by Sani, tamasic, "an earthy Rasi", of the South, strong at night, rising with its back, large, variegated, quadruped in its first half and footless, moving in water, in its second. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 make it Mars's exaltation sign, deepest at 28 degrees, and, seventh from Kark, the sign of Jupiter's fall. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 4 calls it the deer-faced sign, Sl. 7 gives Akokera as another name, and Sl. 24 agrees on a night sign rising with its hind part.
