Nabhasa yoga defined: the 32 yogas read from how the seven grahas are spread around the chart, as BPHS Ch. 35 and Saravali Ch. 21 give them and as this app tests them.

In short

Nabhasa yogas are yogas of shape: they depend only on how the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn are spread across signs and houses, not on dignity. BPHS Ch. 35 and Saravali Ch. 21 each list 32 of them in four groups. This app tests all 32, and exactly one of the seven counting yogas applies to every chart.

What the term means

A Nabhasa yoga is a yoga read from the overall pattern of the chart. Only the seven visible grahas, the Sun to Saturn, are counted, and their dignity does not matter: what matters is how many signs they fill, which kind of sign they sit in, and which houses they occupy. There are four groups. Sankhya ("number") yogas count the signs occupied; Asraya yogas ask whether all seven share one modality; the two Dala yogas look at benefics or malefics in the kendras; and the twenty Akriti ("shape") yogas name patterns of occupied houses.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 1-2 announces 32 Nabhash yogas "which have a total of 1800 different varieties": 3 Asraya, 2 Dala, 20 Akriti and 7 Sankhya. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 1 says the Yavanas explained 1800 kinds, of which it details 32. The lists match closely, with small differences: BPHS Sl. 3-6 names "Nisk" where its own Sl. 14 and Saravali give Nauka, and for Vajra yoga BPHS accepts either benefics in the 1st and 7th or malefics in the 4th and 10th, while Saravali joins the two halves.

How this app computes it

  • Sankhya: the number of distinct signs holding the seven grahas, from one sign (Gola) to seven (Veena). One of the seven always applies.
  • Asraya: all seven in movable signs (Rajju), all in fixed signs (Musala) or all in dual signs (Nala).
  • Dala: benefics in at least three kendras with no malefic in any (Maala), or the reverse (Sarpa).
  • Akriti: twenty house patterns, counted as whole-sign houses from the Lagna. A pattern forms only when all seven grahas sit inside the named houses and every named house holds at least one.
  • For Vajra and Yava the engine follows the BPHS "or". BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 16-17 says a Sankhya yoga does not operate when another Nabhash yoga forms; the engine records this but reports every yoga that forms.

A small illustration

In the chart of 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the seven grahas fill exactly four signs, so the engine reports Kedara Yoga. Across the 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 used by this site's tools, Kedara fires in 785. The Sarpa yoga of this group has nothing to do with Kaal Sarp, which concerns the lunar nodes.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
