An Apoklima, or cadent house, is one of the four houses that come just before the angles: the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th. BPHS grades a planet there at a quarter in one of its strength counts. This app prints "apoklima house" for the 3rd only, because the 6th, 9th and 12th carry their Dusthana or Trikona labels first.
What the term means
Apoklima names the houses that fall away from each angle: the 3rd before the 4th, the 6th before the 7th, the 9th before the 10th and the 12th before the 1st. English texts call them cadent houses. They are the third of the three sets of four, after the Kendras and the Panapharas. Three of the four also belong to other groups: the 6th and 12th are Dusthanas and the 9th is a Trikona.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 names "Sahaj, Ari, Dharm and Vyaya Bhava", the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th, as the Apoklimas, and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 repeats the list. In the Kendradi Bal count of Ch. 27 Sl. 5 a graha in an Apoklima gets a quarter, the lowest of the three grades. The group is not read as weak everywhere, though: Ch. 37 Sl. 1 reads the Moon in an Apoklima counted from the Sun as excellent for wealth and skill, and in a Kendra from the Sun as the least.
How this app uses it
- The engine's list is houses 3, 6, 9 and 12. Its house-type function tests Kendra, Trikona and Dusthana first, so the 9th prints as "trikona", the 6th and 12th as "dusthana", and "apoklima house" appears for the 3rd only.
- For a 1985-06-05, 02:29 IST New Delhi chart with Pisces rising, the Sun and Mercury both sit in Taurus, the 3rd, and the strength table labels each "apoklima house (3rd)". Mercury's line adds "combust (too close to the Sun)".
- As with the other house types, the label explains a placement but does not move the strength total; the app's simplified Shad Bala has no Kendradi Bal component.
- The Nabhasa test for Vapi Yoga accepts the seven grahas spread across all four Apoklimas, each of the four occupied, as one of its two shapes.
