Yogas

Vapi Yoga forms when all seven classical grahas fill the four panapharas (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) or the four apoklimas (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th), each occupied. The rule from BPHS Ch. 35 and Saravali Ch. 21, how this app reads "all", its link to the Asraya yogas, and a worked chart.

In short

Vapi Yoga is the Nabhasa shape in which all seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn occupy every one of the four panapharas (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th houses) or every one of the four apoklimas (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th). BPHS reads it as skill in building lasting wealth. It fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, on 10 January 2026.

Vapi is a tank or step-well - a store of water - and Vapi Yoga is the chart that stores its planets away from the angles. All seven classical grahas fill every house of one of the two non-angular quartets: the panapharas, which follow the angles, or the apoklimas, which precede them. It is one of the twenty Akriti, or shape, yogas of the Nabhasa family, and the counterpart of Kamala Yoga, which does the same with the angles. This page states the rule as coded, the classical reading, why it is rare, and the one Vapi chart in the engine's 3,000-moment sample. For the general worth of any yoga, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Vapi Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 12, right after Kamala: "If all of them happen to be in all the Apoklimas, or in all the Panapharas, Vapi Yog occurs." Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 14 says the seven planets are "relegated either to Apoklima Houses (3, 6, 9 and 12th), or to Panapharas (2, 5, 8 and 11 Houses)". The engine tests:

  1. The seven classical grahas only - the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
  2. Houses are whole signs from the Lagna.
  3. All seven grahas stand in the 2nd, 5th, 8th or 11th - or all seven stand in the 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th.
  4. Every house of that quartet holds at least one graha.

No dignity, combustion, retrogression or lordship test applies. Two readings of the wording are possible, and this sloka is where the engine finds its answer. Saravali's "relegated to" could mean only that no graha stands outside the quartet. BPHS's "in all the Apoklimas" says every one of them is occupied, and the engine's comment cites exactly that phrase as the reason it reads every Akriti rule as the set of occupied houses. On the looser reading, the two near misses described below would both have been Vapi.

What the classical texts say: BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 31 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 29

Both books read Vapi as a yoga of keeping. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 31 says one born in it will be "capable of accumulating wealth", endowed with lasting wealth, happiness and sons, free from eye afflictions, and a king. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 29 has skill in amassing wealth, lasting riches and happiness, beauty, and happiness from sons, and does not make the native a king. Saravali Sl. 8-10 gives the general Akriti reading of contentment, earnings through a king and fame.

The engine's sentence keeps the wealth and the family: "Classically read as a gift for building and keeping wealth, with lasting comfort and family happiness." It drops the kingship and the eyes; the latter is a classical body association, reported here only as the text's claim and not as medical advice. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 50 says Nabhasa results are felt in all dasha periods; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 20-21 that they act at all times.

Both books pair Vapi with Kamala: BPHS gives the two in one sloka (Sl. 12) and Saravali in one sloka (Sl. 14), and both read the pair favourably. The difference is in the emphasis. Kamala is fame, virtue and kingship; Vapi is accumulation and keeping - wealth that lasts rather than renown. The texts do not explain the contrast, and this page does not invent a reason for it; it is enough to notice that the angles and the houses beside them are read as two different kinds of fortune.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from page images) sorts yogas into five groups - lagna, Raja, Chandra, Sun and Parivartana - with no Nabhasa section; the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology do not state Vapi.

How rare it is

Vapi fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 - the January 2026 chart below. The sample is the engine-facts walk: New Delhi, from 1 January 1985, in steps of 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes.

The houses of each quartet are three signs apart, as the angles are. Mercury never strays more than about one sign from the Sun and Venus never more than about two, so the Sun, Mercury and Venus must share one house of the quartet, and the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn must between them fill the other three - with at most one of them to spare and none outside. It is the same arithmetic as Kamala, with two quartets available instead of one, which fits the sample: one Vapi, no Kamala.

Why every Vapi chart is also an Asraya chart

Signs three apart share a modality, so the four houses of any quartet are all movable, all fixed or all dual. Seven grahas in one quartet are therefore seven grahas in one modality: every Vapi chart also forms one of the Asraya yogas - Rajju, Musala or Nala. And seven grahas in four houses are seven in four signs, so every Vapi chart is also Kedara Yoga. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 16-17 would set the Kedara aside; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 would set the Asraya aside. The engine applies neither and lists all three.

Worked example: a January 2026 New Delhi chart

The one Vapi moment in the sample is 10 January 2026 at 14:25 IST, New Delhi. You can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Taurus at 10.75 degrees.

engine-facts.mjs vapi-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Taurus ascendant.
  1. Count from Taurus: Gemini is the 2nd, Virgo the 5th, Sagittarius the 8th and Pisces the 11th - the four panapharas.
  2. The Sun, Mercury and Venus share Sagittarius, as the astronomy requires, and Mars joins them there. Jupiter alone holds the 2nd, the Moon alone the 5th, Saturn alone the 11th.
  3. All seven grahas are in panapharas and every panaphara is occupied. Move Jupiter, the Moon or Saturn and the shape fails.
  4. Rahu in the 10th and Ketu in the 4th sit in angles, but the rule ignores the nodes.

The engine reports Vapi Yoga with the meaning "All 7 classical grahas (Sun through Saturn) sit in houses 2, 5, 8, 11 of your chart, and each of those houses holds at least one", followed by the wealth reading quoted above. Three combust grahas, a retrograde Jupiter and three planets in enemy signs make no difference to the shape.

What else this chart forms, and what it cannot

  • Nala Yoga: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are all dual signs, so the engine returns Nala, as the geometry requires.
  • Kedara Yoga: seven grahas in four signs.
  • Not Hala: the grahas fill four houses three apart, not three houses four apart. Not Kamala: no graha is in an angle.
  • Not Maala or Sarpa, which need occupied angles; not Vajra or Yava, for the same reason.

The full detector also returns Mudrika, Harsha, Vimala, Kendra-Kona Raj and Parivartana yogas here - rules about particular planets and lords, on their own pages.

Two near misses that show the reading

Only two other moments in the 3,000 put all seven grahas inside one Vapi quartet, and both left a house of it empty. On 9 August 2014 at 15:59 IST, with a Sagittarius ascendant, the grahas fill the 2nd, 8th and 11th but not the 5th. On 11 February 2021 at 02:56 IST, with a Scorpio ascendant, they fill only the 3rd and 6th of the apoklimas. On Saravali's looser "relegated to", both would be Vapi; on BPHS's "in all", which the engine follows, neither is. Both still return Rajju Yoga, because each quartet there is made of movable signs - the Asraya link holds even when the shape does not.

Vapi beside its neighbouring shapes

The twelve houses fall into three quartets of houses three apart: the kendras (1, 4, 7, 10), the panapharas (2, 5, 8, 11) and the apoklimas (3, 6, 9, 12). Each quartet is made of four signs of one modality, and which modality depends on the ascendant. That gives a tidy picture of how three Nabhasa groups relate.

All seven grahas in...Every house of the quartet filledSome house of it empty
the kendrasKamala, plus an Asraya yogaAn Asraya yoga; possibly Gada, Shakata or Vihaga
the panapharasVapi, plus an Asraya yogaAn Asraya yoga only
the apoklimasVapi, plus an Asraya yogaAn Asraya yoga only
Derived from the engine's rules: a quartet shares one modality, so seven grahas confined to it always form Rajju, Musala or Nala.

So every Asraya chart is one of these six cells, and Vapi is the full-house case for the two non-angular quartets. The triangles of houses four apart - Shringataka and Hala - cut across all three modalities instead, which is why those shapes never come with an Asraya yoga, and the runs of neighbouring houses such as Yupa mix modalities too.

What a yoga does not tell you

Vapi is a statement about where the seven grahas stand: all in one of the non-angular quartets, each house filled. The texts read it as lasting wealth and this app reports that as their reading. It is not a forecast, carries no strength grade, and has no timing beyond "all times". In the signed-in Kundali, which attaches Mahadasha windows to yogas with named planets, a shape yoga is marked as a whole-chart pattern with no Mahadasha window of its own. Its absence from a chart, the ordinary case, takes nothing away. Nor does a nearly-complete quartet count for anything: the rule is all or nothing, and the engine gives no partial credit to a chart like the 2014 or 2021 near misses above.

Questions about Vapi Yoga

What is the rule for Vapi Yoga?
All seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn are in the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses with every one occupied, or in the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th with every one occupied (whole signs from the ascendant). Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
What are panapharas and apoklimas?
The panapharas are the houses that follow the angles - the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th. The apoklimas are the houses before the angles - the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th. Vapi uses either set in full.
How common is Vapi Yoga?
It fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 in this engine, on 10 January 2026 at 14:25 IST in New Delhi.
Do all four houses have to be occupied?
In this app, yes, following BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 12 ("in all the Apoklimas, or in all the Panapharas"). Saravali's "relegated to" could be read more loosely; on that reading two more sample charts would qualify.
Why does my Vapi chart also show Nala, Rajju or Musala?
Each Vapi quartet is made of signs of one modality, so seven grahas in it always form the matching Asraya yoga. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 says the Asraya gives way to the other Nabhasa yoga.
Does Vapi Yoga promise wealth?
No. BPHS and Saravali read it as skill in gathering and keeping wealth; that is the texts' claim about a pattern. The app reports it and predicts nothing.
Is Vapi a Dhana (wealth) yoga?
Not in the engine's sense. Vapi is a Nabhasa shape about where all seven grahas stand. The Dhana yogas the engine tests, such as Dhan Yoga (Wealth), are separate rules about the lords of particular houses. A chart can have either without the other.
Does it matter whether the panaphara or the apoklima version forms?
Not in the texts. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 31 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 29 give one reading for both, and the engine attaches one sentence to both while naming the houses filled.
