Yogas

Rajju Yoga forms when the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all stand in movable signs - Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. The rule as this app codes it, why Rahu and Ketu are left out, the precedence puzzle it shares with the Sankhya yogas, and a 2014 chart.

In short

Rajju Yoga is the Nabhasa Asraya yoga formed when all seven classical grahas occupy movable signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. BPHS and Saravali read it as a wandering nature that earns abroad. It fired in 3 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.

Rajju means rope. It is the first of the three Asraya - "support" or "resting-place" - yogas that open the Nabhasa chapter of BPHS, and its whole rule is one line: every planet in a movable sign. Its two companions ask the same question of the other kinds of sign - Musala Yoga for fixed signs and Nala Yoga for dual ones. This page states the rule exactly as the engine tests it, names the two choices the texts leave open, reports what BPHS and Saravali read into it, shows how seldom it happens, and checks a 2014 chart by hand. For what any yoga can and cannot carry, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Rajju Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7: "All the Grahas in Movable Rasis cause Rajju Yog." Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 18 says the same in reverse order, ending "in Movable Rasis Rajju Yoga is formed." The engine reads it this way:

  1. Take the seven classical grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
  2. Look up the sign each one occupies and that sign's modality. The movable (chara) signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.
  3. If all seven signs are movable, the engine reports Rajju Yoga. If even one graha is in a fixed or dual sign, it does not.

That is the entire test. The ascendant plays no part: the rule is about signs, not houses, so the Lagna may itself be fixed or dual, as it is in two of the three sample charts below. Degree, dignity, combustion and retrogression are ignored, and there is no requirement that all four movable signs be occupied - seven grahas crowded into one movable sign satisfy the rule as well as seven spread over four.

Two readings the engine had to choose

  • "All the Grahas" means seven. Neither text lists the grahas in Sl. 7 or Sl. 18, and elsewhere both BPHS and this app count Rahu and Ketu as grahas. The engine applies the seven-graha count it uses for every Nabhasa yoga; BPHS states it outright in the neighbouring Akriti rules ("all the 7 Grahas", Sl. 13). This matters more for the Asraya yogas than for most: Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite, and opposite signs always share a modality, so the nodes would either both pass or both fail.
  • Precedence is recorded, not applied. BPHS and Saravali each say that one class of Nabhasa yoga yields to another (next section). The engine comment records both rules and reports every yoga that forms, leaving the reader to apply them.

What the classical texts say about Rajju

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 1-2 introduces 32 Nabhasa yogas - out of "1800 different varieties" - in four classes, and Sl. 3-6 names Rajju, Musala and Nala as the three Asraya. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 2-4 credits the Asraya yogas to an earlier authority, Acharya Manitha, and Sl. 17 introduces them "as per the schools of thought of senior Garga". Both texts, in other words, present this trio as received from older teachers rather than as their own. The BPHS effect, Sl. 18, is that the native will be "fond of wandering", charming and earn in foreign countries, and also cruel and mischievous. Saravali Sl. 43 repeats it almost word for word.

This app keeps the first half and drops the second. Its sentence for the yoga reads: "Classically read as a restless, travel-oriented nature, drawn to earning and living away from home." The engine comment says why the Nabhasa effects are curated: several of the originals are bleak, and they are reframed in a non-fear-based tone rather than reproduced. That is an editorial choice, and the harsher half is quoted here so the reader can see what was left out.

The precedence puzzle

Two rules about rank bear directly on Rajju. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 says an Asraya yoga gives its good effects - "happiness, advantages and qualities" - only when no other Nabhasa yoga is present; if another is present, the other prevails. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 17 says the seven Sankhya yogas, which count how many signs the grahas occupy, are not operable "if another Nabhash Yog is derivable". But exactly one Sankhya yoga forms in every chart, so every Rajju chart also carries one. Read literally and together, Saravali would set Rajju aside for the Sankhya yoga while BPHS sets the Sankhya yoga aside for Rajju.

One way through is to apply BPHS's Sankhya rule first, which leaves Rajju standing unless some Akriti or Dala yoga also forms. That is a reading, not something either text says, and the engine does not take it: it lists Rajju and the Sankhya yoga side by side. In all three sample charts the companion is Sula or Yuga, and no Akriti or Dala yoga forms, so on that reading Rajju would be the operative Nabhasa yoga in each.

BPHS Sl. 50 says Nabhasa results are felt in every dasha period, and Saravali Sl. 20-21 that they act at all times. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from the page images) has five categories - lagna, Raja, Chandra, Sun and Parivartana - and no Nabhasa or Asraya section. Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras do not state Rajju.

How rare it is

Rajju fired in 3 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, about 0.1 percent. The sample is the engine-facts walk: New Delhi, from 1 January 1985, in steps of 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes. All seven grahas shared a modality only 5 times in the whole sample - three Rajju, one Musala and one Nala - so Rajju took the largest share of a very small total.

Why so rare? Each graha has, roughly, a one-in-three chance of being in a movable sign at a random moment, but they are not independent. Mercury stays within about one sign of the Sun and Venus within about two, so the three often share a sign - which helps - but when they spread into neighbouring signs, those signs are of different modalities, which breaks the rule. The slow planets, Jupiter and Saturn, have to be in a movable sign at the same time, which happens only in certain years.

The near misses bear this out. Six of the seven grahas were in movable signs 17 times in the sample. The odd one out was Venus 6 times, Saturn 6 times, Jupiter 3 times and Mars and the Moon once each - never the Sun or Mercury. Venus straying a sign or two from the Sun, and Saturn sitting in the wrong kind of sign for years at a stretch, are what most often stop Rajju.

Worked example: a 2014 New Delhi chart

The first Rajju moment of the walk is 9 August 2014 at 15:59 IST, New Delhi. You can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Sagittarius at 4.68 degrees - a dual sign, which does not matter to this rule.

engine-facts.mjs rajju-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Sagittarius ascendant.
  1. Cancer, Capricorn and Libra are all movable signs. All seven grahas are in one of them, so the rule holds; Aries, the fourth movable sign, is empty, which the rule does not require.
  2. Rahu and Ketu are in Virgo and Pisces, both dual. Had the engine counted the nodes, this chart would not form Rajju - the clearest case in the sample of how much that reading decides.
  3. Three signs are occupied, so the Sankhya yoga is Sula.
  4. The engine reports Rajju Yoga with the meaning "All 7 classical grahas sit in movable signs - a Nabhasa "Asraya" Yoga." and the reading quoted above. It names no planets.

What else the chart forms, and what it cannot

  • Not Musala or Nala: one modality only, by definition.
  • No Akriti shape. From a dual ascendant the movable signs are the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses - the four panapharas. With the 5th, Aries, empty, the grahas fill only three of them, so Vapi Yoga does not form. One graha in Aries would have added it.
  • Not Maala or Sarpa: no graha is in a kendra at all.
  • The full detector also returns Sula, Mudrika, Gaj Kesari, Harsha and Kendra-Kona Raj yogas - separate rules about particular planets, lords and the Moon, which neither add to Rajju nor cancel it.

The third sample chart shows the same near miss from the other side. On 2 November 2041 at 17:23 the ascendant is Aries, so the movable signs are the four angles; the grahas fill the 4th, 7th and 10th and leave the 1st empty. Had the 1st been occupied too, the chart would have formed Kamala Yoga as well - a case the Kamala page works through.

The second sample chart, 11 February 2021 at 02:56, is the most compressed of the three: six grahas in Capricorn and Mars alone in Aries. From a Scorpio ascendant, a fixed sign, the movable signs fall in the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th houses, and only the 3rd and 6th are used. Two occupied signs make the Sankhya yoga Yuga. It shows that Rajju says nothing about how spread out the chart is: the same yoga covers a chart with three signs in use and one with two.

Rajju beside Musala and Nala

The three are mutually exclusive - a sign has only one modality - and between them they cover every possible way for the seven grahas to agree. Read side by side, the three readings line up with the kinds of sign - movement for the movable, steadiness for the fixed, a mix for the dual - though neither text says in these slokas that the effect is derived from the modality.

What a yoga does not tell you

Rajju records that all seven grahas stand in movable signs. The texts link that to wandering and earning abroad; this app reports the reading as theirs and does not forecast travel, emigration or anything else for a person. It has no strength grade - six grahas in movable signs is not a partial Rajju, simply not Rajju. And because no single graha forms it, the signed-in Kundali attaches no Mahadasha window to it, consistent with BPHS Sl. 50's "all periods".

Questions about Rajju Yoga

What is the rule for Rajju Yoga?
All seven classical grahas - the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn - are in movable signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 18.
Does the ascendant have to be in a movable sign?
No. The rule looks only at the seven grahas. In the 2014 example the ascendant is Sagittarius, a dual sign.
Do Rahu and Ketu count?
Not in this app. The Nabhasa rules count the seven grahas only. In the 2014 example the nodes are in dual signs, so counting them would remove the yoga.
How common is Rajju Yoga?
It fired in 3 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, about 0.1 percent. Six of the seven grahas were in movable signs another 17 times.
Why does my chart show Rajju together with Sula or Yuga?
Every chart forms exactly one Sankhya yoga, which counts the signs the grahas occupy. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 17 sets the Sankhya yoga aside when another Nabhasa yoga forms, and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 sets an Asraya yoga aside for other Nabhasa yogas. The app lists both and applies neither rule.
Does Rajju Yoga mean I will live abroad?
No. BPHS and Saravali read it as a wandering nature that earns in foreign countries; this app reports that as their reading. A yoga is a rule about positions, not a prediction.
