Nala Yoga forms when all seven classical grahas stand in dual signs - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces. The rule as the engine codes it, what BPHS and Saravali read into it and how the app rewords the physical trait, why a full Nala from a fixed ascendant is always Vapi too, and a 2026 chart.

In short

Nala Yoga is the Nabhasa Asraya yoga formed when all seven classical grahas occupy dual signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces. BPHS and Saravali read it as a skilful, money-gathering nature helpful to relatives. It fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, a 2026 chart that also forms Vapi Yoga.

Nala is a reed, or a hollow stalk. Nala Yoga is the third of the Asraya yogas of the Nabhasa family and belongs to the dual (dvisvabhava) signs - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces - just as Rajju belongs to the movable signs and Musala to the fixed. Its single sample chart is the clearest case in the family of an Asraya yoga that cannot arrive alone: because it uses all four dual signs, the same seven placements also form Vapi Yoga. This page gives the rule, the texts, the arithmetic of why that happens, and the chart. For what any yoga amounts to, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Nala Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7: "All the Grahas in Dual Rasis cause Nala Yog." Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 18 opens its Asraya list with it: "Should all the planets be in Dual Rasis, Nala Yoga is formed." The engine tests:

  1. The seven classical grahas, Sun through Saturn; Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
  2. The modality of each graha's sign. The engine's code calls the dual signs "common", and its sentence for the yoga uses that word.
  3. If all seven are in dual signs, Nala Yoga is reported. One graha in a movable or fixed sign, and it is not.

Houses, the ascendant, degrees, dignity, combustion and retrogression play no part, and the four dual signs need not all be used. The rule's open points are the family's: "All the Grahas" is read as seven, and the precedence rules of BPHS Sl. 17 and Saravali Sl. 7 are recorded in the engine's comment but not applied. The Rajju page sets out the puzzle those two precedence rules create together.

What the classical texts say about Nala

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 20 says one born in Nala Yoga will have an "uneven physique", be interested in accumulating money, be very skilful, helpful to relatives and charming. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 45 gives the same list and glosses the first item: "some limbs long and some short". It is the only one of the three Asraya readings that begins with the body.

The engine's sentence turns that around: "Classically read as an uneven but resourceful nature, skillful and genuinely helpful to family." The unevenness has moved from the body to the temperament. That is a substantive change, not a paraphrase, and this page flags it: the texts describe a physical trait, the app describes a character trait. The app's policy is to make no physical or medical claims about a reader from a chart pattern, which explains the choice, but a reader comparing the app with the slokas should know the two say different things.

Both texts say the Nabhasa results act at all times (BPHS Sl. 50, Saravali Sl. 20-21), and Saravali Sl. 2-4 credits the Asraya yogas to Acharya Manitha. Saravali Sl. 7 also gives the class as a whole a general reading - happiness, advantages and good qualities - before attaching its precedence condition. BPHS lists the trio as Rajju, Musala, Nala; Saravali Sl. 18 runs the other way, starting with Nala. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from the page images) has no Nabhasa section, and Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras do not state Nala.

How rare it is

Nala fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. The sample is the engine-facts walk: New Delhi, from 1 January 1985, in steps of 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes. The three Asraya yogas together fired 5 times - three Rajju, one Musala and this one Nala - so a single fire says Nala is very rare, not that it is rarer than Rajju.

Near misses were commoner. Six of the seven grahas stood in dual signs 22 times in the sample, slightly more than for the fixed (21) or movable (17) signs. The graha left outside was Venus 7 times, Jupiter 6 times, the Sun 5 times, Saturn twice and Mars and the Moon once each. The Sun's five are distinctive: no Rajju near miss left the Sun out. Mercury and Venus travel with the Sun, so when they sit in the dual sign next to it, the Sun itself can be the one in the wrong kind of sign.

Why a full Nala is always a shape yoga too

Signs of one modality are always three apart: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces sit in four houses spaced evenly round the chart. Which four depends on the ascendant. From a dual ascendant they are the kendras (1, 4, 7, 10); from a fixed ascendant the panapharas (2, 5, 8, 11); from a movable ascendant the apoklimas (3, 6, 9, 12).

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 12 names shape yogas for exactly those quartets: Kamala for all grahas in the four kendras, Vapi for all in the four panapharas or the four apoklimas. The engine reads each as requiring every house of the quartet occupied. So a Nala chart that uses all four dual signs always forms Kamala (dual ascendant) or Vapi (any other ascendant); a Nala chart that uses three or fewer forms neither. The texts do not state this link; it follows from the two rules as the engine codes them, and the Vapi page shows the same arithmetic from the shape's side.

Of the five Asraya charts in the sample, this Nala is the only one that uses all four signs of its modality. The three Rajju charts use two or three, and the Musala chart three. It is therefore also the only Asraya chart in the sample where the precedence question between an Asraya yoga and a shape yoga actually arises.

Worked example: a 2026 New Delhi chart

The first Nala moment of the walk is 10 January 2026 at 14:25 IST, New Delhi; you can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Taurus at 10.75 degrees, a fixed sign, so the dual signs fall in the panapharas.

engine-facts.mjs nala-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Taurus ascendant.
  1. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are all dual signs, and every graha is in one of them. Nala holds.
  2. All four dual signs are occupied - the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses - so Vapi holds as well, by the arithmetic above.
  3. Four signs are occupied, so the Sankhya yoga is Kedara.
  4. Rahu and Ketu are in fixed signs; counting them would remove both Nala and Vapi.
  5. Not Rajju or Musala, by definition; and no Dala yoga - no graha stands in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, all empty of grahas), so neither Maala nor Sarpa can form, and Kamala is ruled out for the same reason.
  6. The engine reports Nala Yoga: "All 7 classical grahas sit in common signs - a Nabhasa "Asraya" Yoga." with the reading quoted above.

The full detector also returns Kedara, Mudrika, Harsha, Vimala, Kendra-Kona Raj and Parivartana yogas - rules about particular planets and house lords that sit beside the Nabhasa yogas without affecting them.

The days around the example: Nala hour by hour

The walk samples one moment every nine days, so it says nothing about how long Nala lasted. An hourly scan of New Delhi from 15 December 2025 to 5 February 2026, running the same detector, found two windows. The first ran from about 10:00 on 2 January to 10:00 on 4 January, while the Moon crossed Gemini; the second from about 19:00 on 8 January to 05:00 on 11 January, while it crossed Virgo. In both, the other six grahas stayed put - the Sun, Mars, Mercury and Venus in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Gemini, Saturn in Pisces - and the Moon's entry into the next sign, Cancer or Libra (both movable), ended the window. The scan steps an hour at a time, so each edge is accurate only to the hour.

The scan also shows the shape-yoga arithmetic at work. In the first window the Moon joined Jupiter in Gemini, Virgo stayed empty, and no Vapi or Kamala formed. In the second, all four dual signs were occupied, and every hour formed either Vapi or Kamala, switching as the ascendant moved through the signs: Kamala whenever a dual sign was rising, so that the dual signs were the angles, and Vapi at every other hour. Kamala fired in none of the 3,000 walk moments, yet here it formed for a couple of hours at a time, several times a day - a reminder that a coarse sample understates yogas that depend on the hour.

Put that together with Saravali Sl. 7 and an odd consequence appears. Across those two and a half days Nala was constant, but the yoga that would prevail over it changed with the hour of birth: Kamala, read in BPHS Sl. 30 as riches, virtue and fame, for a child born while a dual sign rose; Vapi, read as accumulating and keeping wealth, for one born at most other hours. Same planets, same day, different operative yoga. The engine avoids choosing by listing everything that forms.

Nala, Vapi and Kedara: which one counts?

Read strictly, the texts rank these three. BPHS Sl. 17 sets Kedara aside because other Nabhasa yogas are present. Saravali Sl. 7 says an Asraya yoga gives way when another Nabhasa yoga is present, so Vapi would prevail over Nala. The readings overlap more than the names suggest: BPHS Sl. 31 gives Vapi the capacity to accumulate wealth with lasting wealth and happiness, and Saravali Sl. 29 skill in amassing wealth; Nala's own list includes an interest in accumulating money. The engine applies no ranking and lists all three, with Vapi's sentence, "a gift for building and keeping wealth, with lasting comfort and family happiness", beside Nala's.

What a yoga does not tell you

Nala records that all seven grahas stand in dual signs. The texts attach a body type and a set of traits to that; this app reports the traits as the texts' reading, has reworded the physical one, and claims nothing about anyone's body or future. Nala has no strength grade and no partial form, and because it names no planets the signed-in Kundali gives it no Mahadasha window - consistent with BPHS Sl. 50, which ties Nabhasa results to no single period. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 145) puts a yoga's strongest influence in the dasa of the planets that constitute it, which for a rule about all seven grahas points to no one period either.

Questions about Nala Yoga

What is the rule for Nala Yoga?
All seven classical grahas, Sun through Saturn, are in dual signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 18.
Why does the app say "common signs"?
Common is another English name for the dual (dvisvabhava) signs. The engine's code uses it, and so does its sentence for the yoga.
How common is Nala Yoga?
It fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. Six of the seven grahas were in dual signs another 22 times.
Why does the example chart also show Vapi Yoga?
From a Taurus ascendant the four dual signs are the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses. All seven grahas are there and all four are occupied, which is Vapi (BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 12). Any Nala chart using all four dual signs forms Vapi or Kamala.
Is Nala the same as Vapi Yoga?
No. Nala asks only that all seven grahas be in dual signs. Vapi asks that they fill all four panapharas or all four apoklimas. They coincide when a Nala chart uses all four dual signs and the ascendant is not dual; with a dual ascendant the same chart forms Kamala instead.
Does the ascendant matter for Nala?
Not for Nala itself, which tests only the grahas. It decides which houses the dual signs fall in, and therefore whether a four-sign Nala also forms Vapi or Kamala.
Does Nala Yoga mean an uneven body?
BPHS and Saravali say "uneven physique". This app makes no physical claims from a chart and words the trait as an uneven but resourceful nature. Neither is a prediction about a person.
Do Rahu and Ketu count?
No. The Nabhasa rules count the seven grahas only. In the 2026 example the nodes are in fixed signs; counting them would remove the yoga.

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
