In short
A dvisvabhava rashi is a dual or common sign: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces, the third of every three signs in BPHS's repeating order. This app labels them "common", starts their Navamsa count from the 5th sign, has them aspect one another by rashi drishti, puts the Badhaka in the 7th for a dual Ascendant, and detects Nala Yoga.
What the term means
Dvisvabhava means "of two natures". The dvisvabhava rashis, also called dual or common signs, are Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanu and Meena - the last sign of each run of three. The engine labels them "common"; the pages here use "dual" and "common" for the same group.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5 sets the order movable, fixed, dual. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 20-21 gives the name with its synonyms: "DvisvaBhava (Ubhaya, Dual, Common)". BPHS counts a dual sign's Navansh from the 5th sign (Ch. 6 Sl. 12), has each common sign aspect the other three (Ch. 8 Sl. 1-3), and calls all grahas in dual signs Nala Yog (Ch. 35 Sl. 7). Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 13 makes the 9th Navamsa of a common sign Vargottama. BPHS gives the Badhak rule only for movable signs; the 7th for a dual Ascendant comes from Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. 1, pp. 112-113). BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 168-169 gives dual signs 9 years in the Sthir Dasha, which this app does not compute.
How this app uses it
- Navamsa: the count starts 4 signs on - Gemini from Libra, Virgo from Capricorn, Sagittarius from Aries, Pisces from Cancer - and comes back to the sign itself only in the 9th part, the vargottama part Saravali names.
- Rashi drishti: each dual sign aspects the other three, with no exclusion. It is the only quality whose aspects stay inside the group.
- Badhaka: the 7th house for a dual Ascendant, from the modern source; the code records that BPHS is silent.
- Yogas: all seven grahas in dual signs is reported as Nala Yoga.
- Other uses: the D16 and D45 counts start from Sagittarius for a dual sign and the D20 from Leo; in the Chara Dasha's tie-break a dual sign outranks fixed and movable ones.
