What the term means
Kanya is the Sanskrit name for Virgo, the sixth of the twelve rashis: the 30 degrees of sidereal longitude from 150 to 180. The engine's sign list calls it Virgo, and its list of Sanskrit names Kanya. It holds the last three padas of Uttara Phalguni, all of Hasta and the first two padas of Chitra. Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 3 names Kanya sixth, and Sl. 4 makes it the hip of Kaal Purush (a symbolic mapping, not medical advice). By Sl. 5 it is dual, benefic and female. Sl. 13-14 describe it as a hill-resorter, strong in daytime, rising with its head, biped, of the South, holding grains and fire, a virgin, tamasic, and ruled by Budh; the sloka names no element. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54 make it Mercury's exaltation sign, deepest at 15 degrees, and split it three ways for him - 15 degrees exaltation, 5 Mooltrikon, 10 own house. Being seventh from Meen, it is the sign of Venus's fall. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 4 pictures a virgin in a boat holding a lamp, Sl. 7 gives Pathona as another name, and Sl. 24 agrees on a day sign rising with its head.
