In short
Tula is the Sanskrit name for Libra, the seventh sign of the sidereal zodiac, covering 180 to 210 degrees. In this app it is ruled by Venus and labelled movable, Air and odd; those labels set its Navamsa count, rashi drishti and Hora halves.
What the term means
Tula is the Sanskrit name for Libra, the seventh of the twelve rashis: the 30 degrees of sidereal longitude from 180 to 210. The engine's sign list calls it Libra, and its list of Sanskrit names Tula. It holds the last two padas of Chitra, all of Swati and the first three padas of Vishakha. This entry covers the name and how the engine handles it; the reading of the sign is on the Libra (Tula Rashi) page.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 3 names Tula seventh, and Sl. 4 makes it the space below the navel of Kaal Purush (a symbolic mapping, not medical advice). By Sl. 5 it is movable, malefic and male. Sl. 15-16½ describe it as rising with its head, strong in daytime, black, rajasic, of the West, resorting to land, biped, with Sukr as its lord; the sloka names no element. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 make it Saturn's exaltation sign, deepest at 20 degrees, and the sign of the Sun's fall, and Sl. 51-54 give its first half to Sukr as Mooltrikon. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 4 pictures a man holding scales, Sl. 7 gives Jook as another name, and Sl. 24 agrees on a day sign rising with its head. The Bhrigu Sutras spell it Thula (Part I, p. 4).
How this app uses it
- Lord: SIGN_LORDS gives Tula to Shukra (Venus).
- Quality: MODALITY_BY_SIGN marks it movable (chara). That sets its Navamsa count to start from Tula itself, its rashi drishti onto Taurus, Leo and Aquarius, and, when it rises, a Badhaka house in the 11th.
- Element: the engine's element table counts it Air, which feeds the chart's dominant-element count and, when it holds the 10th house, the career reading.
- Parity: as an odd sign, its first 15 degrees are the Sun's Hora (D2) and its last 15 the Moon's.
- Dignity: Saturn is exalted here (deep point 20 degrees) and the Sun debilitated (deep point 10). For Venus, dignityOf() returns Moolatrikona from 0 to 15 degrees and Own sign after.
