In short
Simha is the Sanskrit name for Leo, the fifth sign of the sidereal zodiac, covering 120 to 150 degrees. In this app it is ruled by the Sun and labelled fixed, Fire and odd; those labels set its Navamsa count, rashi drishti and Hora halves.
What the term means
Simha is the Sanskrit name for Leo, the fifth of the twelve rashis: the 30 degrees of sidereal longitude from 120 to 150. The engine's sign list calls it Leo, and its list of Sanskrit names Simha. It holds all of Magha and Purva Phalguni and the first pada of Uttara Phalguni. This entry covers the name and how the engine handles it; the reading of the sign is on the Leo (Simha Rashi) page.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 3 names Simh fifth, and Sl. 4 makes it the stomach of Kaal Purush (a symbolic mapping, not medical advice). By Sl. 5 it is fixed, malefic and male. Sl. 12 describes it as ruled by Surya, sattvic, quadruped, royal, rising with its head, large and white, belonging to the East and strong in daytime. That sloka names no element for Simh; the engine's element table simply repeats Fire, Earth, Air, Water round the zodiac, which puts it under Fire. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 give its first 20 degrees to the Sun as Mooltrikon and the rest as his own house. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 7 gives Leya as another name, Sl. 9-10 put Leo at the head of the solar half, and Sl. 24 agrees on a day sign rising with its head.
How this app uses it
- Lord: SIGN_LORDS gives Simha to Surya (the Sun).
- Quality: MODALITY_BY_SIGN marks it fixed (sthira). That sets its Navamsa count to start from Aries, its rashi drishti onto Aries, Libra and Capricorn, and, when it rises, a Badhaka house in the 9th.
- Element: the engine's element table counts it Fire, which feeds the chart's dominant-element count and, when it holds the 10th house, the career reading.
- Parity: as an odd sign, its first 15 degrees are the Sun's Hora (D2) and its last 15 the Moon's. The Chara Dasha reads the Pad (footedness) instead, and puts Leo in an even Pad although it is an odd sign.
- Dignity: for the Sun, dignityOf() returns Moolatrikona from 0 to 20 degrees and Own sign after. No graha is exalted or debilitated here.
