In short

Mithuna is the Sanskrit name for Gemini, the third sign of the sidereal zodiac, covering 60 to 90 degrees. In this app it is ruled by Mercury and labelled dual, Air and odd; those labels set its Navamsa count, rashi drishti and Hora halves.

What the term means

Mithuna is the Sanskrit name for Gemini, the third of the twelve rashis: the 30 degrees of sidereal longitude from 60 to 90. The engine's sign list calls it Gemini, and its list of Sanskrit names Mithuna. It holds the last two padas of Mrigashira, all of Ardra and the first three padas of Punarvasu. This entry covers the name and how the engine handles it; the reading of the sign is on the Gemini (Mithuna Rashi) page.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 3 names Mithun third, and Sl. 4 makes it the arms of Kaal Purush (a symbolic mapping, not medical advice). By Sl. 5 it is dual, malefic and male. Sl. 9-9½ describe a male and a female holding a mace and a lute, rising with its head, belonging to the West, "an airy Rasi", biped, strong at night, and ruled by Budh. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 4 draws the same couple, Sl. 7 gives Jutuma as another name, and Sl. 24 agrees that it is a night sign rising with its head. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39½ makes Mithun Rahu's Mooltrikon. No graha of the seven has its exaltation or fall here in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50.

How this app uses it

  • Lord: SIGN_LORDS gives Mithuna to Budha (Mercury).
  • Quality: MODALITY_BY_SIGN marks it dual (dvisvabhava). That sets its Navamsa count to start from Libra, its rashi drishti onto Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, and, when it rises, a Badhaka house in the 7th.
  • Element: the engine's element table counts it Air, which feeds the chart's dominant-element count and, when it holds the 10th house, the career reading.
  • Parity: as an odd sign, its first 15 degrees are the Sun's Hora (D2) and its last 15 the Moon's.
  • Dignity: Mercury is in its own sign; none of the seven grahas is exalted or debilitated here. BPHS's node signs are not applied, so Rahu reads Neutral here as everywhere.
