In short
Vrishabha is the Sanskrit name for Taurus, the second sign of the sidereal zodiac, covering 30 to 60 degrees. In this app it is ruled by Venus and labelled fixed, Earth and even; those labels set its Navamsa count, rashi drishti and Hora halves.
What the term means
Vrishabha is the Sanskrit name for Taurus, the second of the twelve rashis: the 30 degrees of sidereal longitude from 30 to 60. The engine's sign list calls it Taurus, and its list of Sanskrit names Vrishabha. It holds the last three padas of Krittika, all of Rohini and the first two padas of Mrigashira. This entry covers the name and how the engine handles it; the reading of the sign is on the Taurus (Vrishabha Rashi) page.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 3 names Vrishabh second, and Sl. 4 makes it the face of Kaal Purush (a symbolic mapping, not medical advice). By the repeating order of Sl. 5 it is fixed, benefic and female. Sl. 8 describes it as white, long, quadruped, strong at night, belonging to the South, "an earthy Rasi" rising with its back, and lorded by Sukr. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54 make it the Moon's exaltation sign, deepest at 3 degrees, with the rest of the sign after those 3 degrees her Mooltrikon. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39½ also gives Vrishabh as Rahu's exaltation sign. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 7 gives Tavuru as another name, and Sl. 24 agrees on a night sign rising with its hind part.
How this app uses it
- Lord: SIGN_LORDS gives Vrishabha to Shukra (Venus).
- Quality: MODALITY_BY_SIGN marks it fixed (sthira). That sets its Navamsa count to start from Capricorn, its rashi drishti onto Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, and, when it rises, a Badhaka house in the 9th.
- Element: the engine's element table counts it Earth, which feeds the chart's dominant-element count and, when it holds the 10th house, the career reading.
- Parity: as an even sign, its first 15 degrees are the Moon's Hora (D2) and its last 15 the Sun's. The Chara Dasha reads the Pad (footedness) instead, and puts Taurus in an odd Pad although it is an even sign.
- Dignity: the Moon is exalted here (deep point 3 degrees), and dignityOf() keeps that label over the whole sign, so the Moolatrikona span BPHS gives the Moon after 3 degrees is never shown. Venus is in its own sign; no graha is debilitated here.
