Yogas

Musala Yoga forms when all seven classical grahas stand in fixed signs - Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius. The rule as the engine tests it, the best-regarded reading among the Asraya yogas, why Saravali would let Vajra override it in the only sample chart, and that 1986 chart worked by hand.

In short

Musala Yoga is the Nabhasa Asraya yoga formed when the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all occupy fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius. BPHS reads it as honour, wisdom and a firm disposition. It fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, a chart that also forms Vajra Yoga.

A musala is a pestle or a club - a heavy, upright object that stays where it is set down. Musala Yoga is the Asraya yoga of the fixed signs: every one of the seven classical grahas in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius. It is one of three such rules in the Nabhasa family, beside Rajju for movable signs and Nala for dual ones, and of the three it gets the most favourable reading in both classical texts. The story of this page is that the only chart in the sample to form it also formed a yoga that, on Saravali's rule, outranks it. For what a yoga amounts to in general, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Musala Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7: "All the Grahas in Fixed Rasis cause Musala Yog." Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 18: "if these are in Fixed Rasis, Musala Yoga takes place." The engine's test has three steps:

  1. Take the seven classical grahas, the Sun through Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
  2. Find the modality of the sign each occupies - movable, fixed or dual.
  3. If every one of the seven is in a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), report Musala Yoga.

Nothing else enters. The ascendant can be any sign; degrees, dignity, combustion and retrogression are ignored; and the grahas need not use all four fixed signs. Because houses do not matter, the same Musala can sit in very different house patterns: from a fixed Lagna the fixed signs are the four kendras, from a movable one they are the four panapharas (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th), and from a dual one the four apoklimas (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th).

Ascendant isFixed signs fall in housesIf all four fixed signs are occupied, the engine also forms
Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)1, 4, 7, 10 - the kendrasKamala Yoga
Movable (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)2, 5, 8, 11 - the panapharasVapi Yoga
Dual (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces)3, 6, 9, 12 - the apoklimasVapi Yoga
Derived from the engine's rules: Kamala and Vapi (BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 12) need every house of their quartet occupied, and the quartets are exactly the signs of one modality.

So a Musala chart that uses all four fixed signs always forms a shape yoga too - Kamala or Vapi, depending on the ascendant - while one that uses three or fewer forms neither. That is not a separate rule in either text; it follows from how the engine reads the two sets of slokas, and it means Saravali's precedence question (below) arises automatically for every four-sign Musala.

Two points are left open by the slokas and settled by the engine. "All the Grahas" is read as the seven, the count the engine uses for every Nabhasa yoga; and the precedence rules between Nabhasa classes are recorded in the code comment but not applied, so every yoga that forms is reported.

What the classical texts say: BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 19 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 44

BPHS Sl. 19 says one born in Musala Yoga will be endowed with honour, wisdom and wealth, be dear to the king and famous, have many sons and be "firm in disposition". Saravali Sl. 44 gives the same honour, wealth, wisdom, royal favour and fame, and adds attachment to duty, steadiness of mind and boldness. Neither attaches a single unfavourable trait - unlike Rajju, whose reading in both books ends with cruelty, and Nala, whose begins with an uneven physique.

The engine compresses it to: "Classically read as honour, steadiness and wisdom - classically one of the better Asraya Yogas." The ranking in the second half is the app's own summary of the three readings side by side; neither text ranks the Asraya yogas against each other. The list of sons is left out, as a family outcome no chart pattern can establish.

Saravali Sl. 2-4 credits the three Asraya yogas to Acharya Manitha, an older authority, while BPHS presents them without attribution. Both say Nabhasa results act throughout life (BPHS Sl. 50, Saravali Sl. 20-21). Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from the page images) has no Nabhasa section, and Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras do not state Musala.

Saravali Sl. 7: when another Nabhasa yoga prevails

Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 attaches a condition to every Asraya yoga: the native obtains its good effects "provided there is no other kind of (Nabhasa) Yoga present". If another is present, the effects of the Asraya yoga "do not come to pass, but the other (Nabhasa) Yoga prevails". BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 17 states a similar rule for the Sankhya yogas, not for the Asraya. The engine records Sl. 7 in its comment and does not apply it. For Musala this matters more than for its siblings, because its reading is the one a reader would least want overruled - and in the sample, it would be.

How rare it is

Musala fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. The sample is the engine-facts walk - New Delhi, from 1 January 1985, in steps of 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes. All three Asraya yogas together fired only 5 times: three Rajju, one Musala, one Nala. With samples this small, the difference between one and three is not a measured difference in rarity between the yogas.

A wider view of the same 3,000 moments shows how steeply the odds fall as more grahas are asked to agree:

Most grahas sharing one modalityMoments in 3,000
3 of 71,367
4 of 71,195
5 of 7373
6 of 760
7 of 7 (an Asraya yoga)5
Scratchpad count over the engine-facts walk (agentQ-asraya.mjs), run 2026-10-14. With seven grahas and three modalities, at least three always share one.

Of the 60 six-of-seven moments, 21 had six grahas in fixed signs. The odd one out was Saturn 6 times, Jupiter 4, Mercury and Mars 3 each, the Moon and Venus 2 each and the Sun once. Saturn and Jupiter are slow; when one of them sits in a movable or dual sign, it blocks Musala for the whole of its stay there, however the faster planets move.

There is a second reason the count is so small, and it is about the sample, not the sky. Because the ascendant plays no part, Musala does not depend on the hour of birth; it is mostly a property of the day. The Moon, which spends only a couple of days in each sign, is usually the last graha to fall into place and the first to leave, so a Musala window opens and closes within days. The walk steps forward a little over nine days at a time, so it can step clean over such a window. The 1-in-3,000 figure is the honest count of what the walk landed on, not a precise rate.

Worked example: the 1986 chart that also forms Vajra

The first and only Musala moment of the sample is 24 February 1986 at 06:22 IST, New Delhi; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator to check. The ascendant is Aquarius at 0.3 degrees - a fixed sign, so here the fixed signs are the angles.

engine-facts.mjs musala-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from an Aquarius ascendant.
  1. Aquarius, Leo and Scorpio are fixed signs, and all seven grahas are in one of them. The rule holds. Taurus, the fourth fixed sign, is empty.
  2. Rahu and Ketu are in movable signs. Counting them, as the engine does not, would remove the yoga.
  3. The engine reports Musala Yoga: "All 7 classical grahas sit in fixed signs - a Nabhasa "Asraya" Yoga." followed by the reading quoted above.

Vajra on the same chart, and what Saravali would make of it

All four benefics - Mercury, Jupiter and Venus in the 1st, the Moon in the 7th - stand in the 1st and 7th houses with both occupied, so the engine also reports Vajra Yoga from the benefic half of BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11. It reports Sula as well, for seven grahas in three signs, plus Mudrika, Ruchaka (Mars in its own sign in an angle), Raja and Kendra-Kona Raj yogas, which are separate tests about particular planets and lords.

On Saravali Sl. 7, Musala's honour-and-wisdom reading would not come to pass here; Vajra, read in both books as happiness at the start and end of life with courage and charm, would prevail. The twist is that Saravali's own Vajra rule (Sl. 14) asks for benefics in the 1st and 7th while malefics hold the 4th and 10th - and here the Sun is in the 1st and the 4th is empty - so on Saravali's rules taken together, this chart forms no Vajra, and Musala stands. Mix BPHS's Vajra with Saravali's precedence and Musala falls. The engine uses BPHS's "or" for Vajra and applies no precedence, so it shows both and lets the reader weigh them.

On BPHS alone the outcome is different again. BPHS states no precedence for the Asraya yogas, so Musala and Vajra both stand; its only rank rule, Sl. 17, sets aside the Sankhya yoga - here Sula - because other Nabhasa yogas are derivable. Three readings of one chart, then: both yogas operative (BPHS), Musala alone (Saravali throughout, provided its Sl. 7 is not taken to let the ever-present Sankhya yoga override an Asraya yoga), or Vajra alone (the two books mixed).

The near miss is also worth seeing. From a fixed ascendant the fixed signs are the angles, so this chart has all seven grahas in kendras, filling the 1st, 7th and 10th. One graha in Taurus, the 4th, would have made it Kamala Yoga as well; the Kamala page discusses that pairing from the other side.

What a yoga does not tell you

Musala says that all seven grahas sit in fixed signs. The texts read honour, wisdom and royal favour into that, and the app reports the reading as theirs. It is not a promise of status for anyone. It has no strength grade and no partial form; six grahas in fixed signs is simply not Musala. It names no planets, so the signed-in Kundali gives it no Mahadasha window. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 145) says a yoga's influence is greatest in the dasa of the planets that constitute it; for a rule about all seven grahas at once that gives no single period, and BPHS Sl. 50 says Nabhasa results are felt in all of them. And whether it is operative at all depends on which precedence rule a reader accepts - something the texts themselves do not settle.

Questions about Musala Yoga

What is the rule for Musala Yoga?
All seven classical grahas, the Sun through Saturn, are in fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 18.
How common is Musala Yoga?
It fired in 1 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. Six of the seven grahas were in fixed signs another 21 times.
Is Musala a good yoga?
BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 19 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 44 read it favourably - honour, wisdom, wealth, steadiness. The app reports that as the texts' reading; it is not a forecast.
Why does the example chart show Musala and Vajra together?
They test different things: Musala the modality of all seven grahas, Vajra where the benefics or malefics stand. The 1986 chart satisfies both. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 says an Asraya yoga gives way to another Nabhasa yoga; the app lists both.
Do Rahu and Ketu affect Musala Yoga?
Not in this app. The Nabhasa rules count only the seven grahas. In the 1986 example the nodes are in movable signs, so counting them would remove the yoga.
What is the difference between Musala and Kamala Yoga?
Musala asks only that all seven grahas be in fixed signs. Kamala asks that they fill all four angles. With a fixed ascendant the angles are the fixed signs, so a Kamala chart from a fixed ascendant is always Musala, but a Musala chart is Kamala only if all four fixed signs are occupied. The 1986 example leaves Taurus empty.
Does the ascendant need to be in a fixed sign?
No. Only the grahas are tested. When the ascendant is fixed, as in 1986, the fixed signs are the angles; from other ascendants they fall in other houses.

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
