In short
Vajra Yoga, in BPHS Ch. 35, forms when all the benefics (Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) occupy the 1st and 7th houses, or all the malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn) occupy the 4th and 10th, both houses held. This app follows that "or"; Saravali requires both at once. It fired in 13 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.
Vajra is the thunderbolt, and Vajra Yoga is the odd one out among the twenty Akriti, or shape, yogas of the Nabhasa family. The other shapes ask where all seven grahas stand. Vajra, with its mirror Yava Yoga, asks where one group of them stands - the benefics or the malefics - and the two classical texts disagree about whether one group is enough. This page sets out the rule as the engine codes it, the disagreement and why the engine took one side, the overlaps that follow, and a 1986 chart. The general question of what a yoga amounts to is covered in what a yoga in your chart means.
The rule: how Vajra Yoga forms
BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11: "Vajr Yog is caused by all benefics in Lagn and Yuvati Bhava, or all malefics in Bandhu and Karm Bhava." Lagn and Yuvati are the 1st and 7th houses; Bandhu and Karm the 4th and 10th. The engine reads that as two alternative tests and reports Vajra when either passes.
- Only the seven classical grahas are considered. Among them the engine's benefics are the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus; its malefics are the Sun, Mars and Saturn. Rahu and Ketu, though malefics in the engine's wider list, are outside the seven and do not count.
- Benefic half: all four benefics stand in the 1st or the 7th house (whole signs from the ascendant), and each of those two houses holds at least one benefic. The malefics can be anywhere.
- Malefic half: all three malefics stand in the 4th or the 10th, and each of those two houses holds at least one malefic. The benefics can be anywhere.
- Either half is enough. The engine tests the benefic half first; if it passes, the result names the benefics, otherwise it names the malefics when their half passes.
Dignity, combustion and retrogression play no part. The engine's sentence names the group and the houses - for example, that all the natural benefics among the seven grahas sit in houses 1 and 7, both of them occupied.
What the classical texts say, and where they part
Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 14 states the rule differently: "If benefics occupy the Lagna and 7th, while malefics are in the 4th and 10th, Vajra Yoga is formed." BPHS has "or"; Saravali has "while". Under Saravali's wording both halves must hold at once. The engine's comment records the choice: the BPHS "or" is used, and Saravali's joined reading is noted as the stricter alternative, not used.
What Saravali's reading would mean in practice
If the benefics fill the 1st and 7th while the malefics fill the 4th and 10th, all seven grahas are in the four angles and every angle is occupied. That is exactly Kamala Yoga. On Saravali's reading, then, every Vajra chart is a Kamala chart - and Kamala fired in 0 of the 3,000 sampled moments, so Saravali's Vajra would not have appeared once in the sample. On BPHS's reading it appeared 13 times. The choice between the two books is the difference between a rare yoga and one the engine practically never reports.
On effects the two books agree. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 28 says one born in Vajra Yoga is happy at the beginning and the end of life, valorous and charming, but "devoid of desires and fortunes" and inimical. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 26 gives the same happy beginning and end, boldness and beauty, and adds freedom from sickness, while calling the native unfortunate and inimical to his own people. Its mirror, Yava, is given happiness in the middle of life - the reversed rule carries a reversed timing. The engine keeps the positive core: "Classically read as courage and charm, with the early and late parts of life classically the happiest."
BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 50 says Nabhasa results are felt through all dasha periods; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 20-21 says they act at all times. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from page images) sorts yogas into five groups - lagna, Raja, Chandra, Sun and Parivartana - with no Nabhasa section; the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology do not state this yoga. The yoga calculator page sets the whole Nabhasa family side by side.
Who counts as a benefic
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 makes the Moon a malefic when waning and Mercury a malefic when joined with a malefic. The Vajra sloka just says "benefics" and "malefics", and the engine uses fixed lists - the same ones its Maala and Sarpa tests use - regardless of the Moon's phase or Mercury's company. A reader applying Ch. 3 strictly could move Mercury or the Moon between the groups and get a different answer for some charts.
How rare it is
Vajra fired in 13 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, about 0.4 percent: 7 times from the benefic half and 6 from the malefic half. The sample is the engine-facts walk - New Delhi, from 1 January 1985, in steps of 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes.
That is rare, but far commoner than the whole-chart shapes, and the "or" explains why. Each half constrains only part of the chart. The benefic half needs four planets on one axis; Mercury and Venus, never far from the Sun, have to share a house, and the Sun itself is free. The malefic half needs only three planets on the other axis, with the other four free. None of the 13 came with Shakata, Vihaga, Yava or Kamala.
| Moment (IST, New Delhi) | Ascendant | Half that formed it | Sankhya yoga beside it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1986-02-24 06:22 | Aquarius | Benefics in 1st and 7th | Sula (and Musala) |
| 1987-10-09 08:27 | Libra | Benefics in 1st and 7th | Kedara |
| 1993-11-27 04:09 | Libra | Benefics in 1st and 7th | Kedara |
| 1998-09-20 05:10 | Leo | Benefics in 1st and 7th | Pasa |
| 2003-02-27 14:56 | Cancer | Benefics in 1st and 7th | Pasa |
| 2009-03-12 00:10 | Scorpio | Malefics in 4th and 10th | Pasa |
| 2011-04-07 01:21 | Sagittarius | Malefics in 4th and 10th | Kedara |
| 2015-05-19 01:06 | Aquarius | Malefics in 4th and 10th | Kedara |
| 2016-05-26 12:23 | Leo | Malefics in 4th and 10th | Pasa |
| 2027-03-05 14:47 | Cancer | Benefics in 1st and 7th | Pasa |
| 2030-11-12 18:03 | Taurus | Benefics in 1st and 7th | Kedara |
| 2047-07-02 11:22 | Virgo | Malefics in 4th and 10th | Damini |
| 2050-08-04 23:50 | Aries | Malefics in 4th and 10th | Pasa |
One pattern in the list follows directly from the rule. The malefic half puts the Sun in the 4th or the 10th house, the bottom or top of the chart, so every malefic-half moment falls close to midnight or noon - between 23:50 and 01:21, or between 11:22 and 12:23. The benefic half does not constrain the Sun, and its times are scattered through the day. Only the first moment also forms an Asraya yoga.
Worked example: a 1986 New Delhi chart
The first Vajra moment of the walk is 24 February 1986 at 06:22 IST, New Delhi. You can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Aquarius at 0.3 degrees, just risen.
| Graha | Group | Sign and degree | House | Engine notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Benefic | Aquarius 28.46 | 1 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Benefic | Aquarius 7.21 | 1 | Friendly sign; combust |
| Venus | Benefic | Aquarius 20.00 | 1 | Friendly sign; combust |
| Moon | Benefic | Leo 4.02 | 7 | Neutral |
| Sun | Malefic | Aquarius 11.46 | 1 | Neutral |
| Mars | Malefic | Scorpio 18.98 | 10 | Own sign |
| Saturn | Malefic | Scorpio 15.57 | 10 | Enemy sign |
- Benefic half. Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are in Aquarius, the 1st house; the Moon is in Leo, the 7th. All four benefics are in the 1st or 7th, and both houses hold one. The half passes.
- Malefic half, for completeness. Mars and Saturn are in Scorpio, the 10th, but the Sun is in the 1st and the 4th house is empty. It fails - though one half is enough.
- The engine reports Vajra Yoga naming the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, with the meaning that all the natural benefics among the seven grahas sit in houses 1 and 7, both occupied.
On the stricter benefic list of BPHS Ch. 3 the answer holds. Mercury shares Aquarius with the Sun, a malefic, so it would join the malefics; the Moon in Leo is nearly opposite the Sun and waxing, so it stays a benefic. The remaining benefics - Moon, Jupiter, Venus - still fill the 1st and 7th. On Saravali's joined reading it fails, because the malefics are not confined to the 4th and 10th.
Siblings on the same chart
- Musala Yoga. Aquarius, Leo and Scorpio are all fixed signs, so the engine also returns Musala Yoga, the fixed-sign Asraya yoga, and Sula for seven grahas in three signs. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 would let Vajra prevail over the Musala; BPHS Sl. 16-17 would set the Sula aside.
- Not Yava: the benefics are not in the 4th and 10th, and the malefics are not in the 1st and 7th.
- Not Shakata or Kamala: all seven grahas are in angles - the 1st, 7th and 10th - but three angles fit neither shape, and the 4th is empty.
- Not Maala or Sarpa: the angles hold both benefics and malefics.
When Vajra arrives with Shakata, Vihaga and Yava
Because each half is a separate test, Vajra can share a chart with shapes that look unrelated. The engine's comment spells it out: all seven grahas in the 1st and 7th can form Shakata, Vajra and Yava together, and all seven in the 4th and 10th can form Vihaga, Vajra and Yava. Precisely, each of Vajra and Yava then forms only if its own group occupies both houses. The engine's first Shakata chart, from 2389, has all four benefics in the 7th and none in the 1st, so it forms Shakata and Yava but not Vajra. The texts give no rule to resolve the overlap, and the engine leaves it visible rather than invent one.
What a yoga does not tell you
Vajra names a placement of one group of planets on one axis. The texts read it as courage and a happy start and end to life; this app reports that reading as theirs. It is not a forecast. Unlike the whole-chart shapes, Vajra names planets, so the signed-in Kundali can list the Mahadasha periods of the group that formed it - here the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. That is a lookup the app performs, not a rule of the texts: BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 50 says Nabhasa results are felt in every period. For the periods themselves, see the Jupiter Mahadasha and Saturn Mahadasha pages.

Questions about Vajra Yoga
- Do I need both benefics in the 1st and 7th and malefics in the 4th and 10th?
- Not in this app. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11 joins the two with "or", and the engine follows it: either half forms Vajra. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 14 asks for both at once, which would make every Vajra chart a Kamala chart.
- Which planets count as benefics and malefics here?
- Among the seven classical grahas, the engine's benefics are the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, and its malefics are the Sun, Mars and Saturn. It does not adjust for the Moon's phase or Mercury's company, as BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 would.
- How common is Vajra Yoga?
- It fired in 13 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, about 0.4 percent - 7 times from the benefic half and 6 from the malefic half.
- What is the difference between Vajra and Yava?
- They are mirror images. Vajra is benefics in the 1st and 7th or malefics in the 4th and 10th; Yava is benefics in the 4th and 10th or malefics in the 1st and 7th. The texts give Vajra happiness at the start and end of life and Yava happiness in the middle.
- Why does my chart show Vajra and Musala together?
- Because they test different things. Vajra looks at one group of planets in two angles; Musala asks whether all seven grahas are in fixed signs. The 1986 example forms both. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 says an Asraya yoga such as Musala gives way when another Nabhasa yoga is present.
- Does Vajra Yoga have a dasha?
- BPHS and Saravali say Nabhasa results act at all times. The app's signed-in Kundali lists the Mahadashas of the group that formed the yoga, as a lookup; it does not claim the texts tie Vajra to those periods.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
