Shakata Yoga, as BPHS Ch. 35 defines it, puts all seven grahas in the 1st and 7th houses only. How this app tests it, why it is not the Moon-Jupiter 6/8 "Sakata" of later books, how it pulls in Yava, Yuga and an Asraya yoga, and a worked chart.

In short

Shakata Yoga, in BPHS Ch. 35 and Saravali Ch. 21, is the Nabhasa shape in which all seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn stand in the 1st and 7th houses, both occupied. It is not the later "Sakata" of Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon, which this app does not detect. It fired in 0 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.

Shakata Yoga takes its name from the cart, and the classical texts make the image literal by giving its native a life of pulling one. The rule behind the name is geometric: every one of the seven classical grahas stands in the ascendant or in the house opposite it, and nowhere else. It is one of the twenty Akriti, or shape, yogas in the Nabhasa family. This page gives the rule exactly as the engine tests it, separates it from a different "Sakata" that later authors build from the Moon and Jupiter, reports what the texts say and how this app softens it, and walks through one chart. For what any yoga amounts to, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Shakata Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11 says Sakat Yoga occurs "when all the Grahas are disposed in Lagn and Yuvati Bhava" - the 1st house and the 7th house. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 15 adds the word "only". The engine's test has four parts.

  1. Seven grahas count - the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are ignored, as Saravali Ch. 21 speaks only of "the seven planets".
  2. Houses are whole signs from the Lagna: the 1st house is the ascendant's sign and the 7th is the sign opposite it.
  3. No graha stands outside those two houses.
  4. Both houses hold at least one graha. Seven planets all in the 7th do not form Shakata.

Nothing else is asked. Dignity, combustion, retrogression and lordship are not tested, so a debilitated Jupiter counts the same as an exalted one.

The reading the engine chose

The texts say the grahas are "disposed in" the two houses, which could mean either that both houses are occupied or merely that no graha is outside them. The engine takes the first reading for every shape yoga. Its comment gives the reason: under the looser reading, seven grahas packed into the 1st alone would count as Gada, Shakata, Shringataka, Kamala and Yupa at the same time, so one cluster would wear five names. Requiring every named house to be occupied makes each shape a distinct pattern.

Two different yogas called Shakata

If you have met "Shakata Yoga" in a modern book or an app, it was probably a different rule. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 79) writes that "Jupiter and the Moon in 6th-8th positions actually generate Sakata Yoga", and treats it as the opposite of Gaj Kesari: Jupiter and the Moon out of rapport. That rule concerns two planets; the Nabhasa Shakata concerns all seven. They share a name and nothing else.

Which one this app detects

This app's "Shakata Yoga" is only the Nabhasa shape of BPHS Ch. 35 and Saravali Ch. 21. The engine does not detect the Moon-Jupiter 6/8 rule under any name, so a chart with Jupiter sixth or eighth from the Moon will not show Shakata here unless all seven grahas also fill the 1st and 7th.

What the classical texts say about the Nabhasa Shakata

Both texts place Shakata among the twenty Akriti yogas, which Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 2-6 credits to Savitracharya. Its effects are among the bleakest in the chapter. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 24 lists illness, damaged nails, foolishness, a living earned by pulling carts, poverty and the absence of friends and relatives. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 30 gives nearly the same list and adds a difficult marriage. Those are the texts' claims, reported here briefly; they are not this page's view of anyone. The engine reframes them: "Classically read as a life that classically calls for extra care with health and with building a circle of support - worth tending deliberately, not a fixed verdict." Nothing on this page is medical advice. Compare the mirror shape on the other axis, Vihaga Yoga, and the gentler readings of Gada Yoga.

Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 8-10 adds a general reading for every Akriti yoga that runs the other way - contentment with one's own fortune, earnings through a king, fame - so even inside one book the shape's own sloka and the family's general sloka do not agree. On timing, BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 50 says Nabhasa results are felt through all the dasha periods; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 20-21 says they act at all times, independent of dashas. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from page images) has no Nabhasa section, and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention the Nabhasa Shakata.

How rare it is

Shakata fired in 0 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. The engine-facts walk - New Delhi, from 1 January 1985, in steps of 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes - first met it at its 16,203rd moment, in January 2389. Of the four two-angle and four-angle shapes - Gada, Shakata, Vihaga and Kamala - none fired in the 1985-2060 sample, and the walk met Shakata later than Gada (2179) and Kamala (2250), while it never met Vihaga in 20,000 moments.

The reason is plain from the rule. Mercury never stands more than about one sign from the Sun and Venus never more than about two, so neither can be opposite the Sun: the Sun, Mercury and Venus must share one of the two houses. The Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn then have to sit in that same sign or exactly opposite it, and the birth time must put that axis on the horizon. The rule treats the 1st-7th axis exactly as Vihaga treats the 4th-10th; which of the two a finite walk meets first is a matter of where the slow planets happen to be.

Worked example: the engine's first Shakata chart, January 2389

Since the 1985-2060 sample has no Shakata chart, the example is the walk's first one: 27 January 2389 at 17:14 IST, New Delhi. It is the engine's computation for that moment, used to show the rule, not a claim about anyone born then. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Cancer at 0.22 degrees.

engine-facts.mjs shakata-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Cancer ascendant.
  1. From Cancer, Capricorn is the 7th sign. Six grahas stand there.
  2. Saturn stands in Cancer, the 1st house.
  3. No graha of the seven is anywhere else, and both houses are occupied. The shape holds.
  4. Rahu in the 2nd and Ketu in the 8th fall outside, but the rule ignores them. Jupiter's debilitation and Mars's exaltation are equally irrelevant.

The engine reports Shakata Yoga with the meaning "All 7 classical grahas (Sun through Saturn) sit in houses 1, 7 of your chart, and each of those houses holds at least one", followed by the reframed reading quoted above.

What else forms, and the Vajra-Yava question

  • Yuga Yoga: two occupied houses are two occupied signs, so every Shakata chart is a Yuga chart too. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 16-17 would set the Yuga aside.
  • Rajju Yoga: opposite signs always share a modality, so a Shakata chart always forms one Asraya yoga. Cancer and Capricorn are movable, and the engine also returns Rajju Yoga. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 would let the Shakata prevail over it.
  • Yava Yoga: the malefics among the seven - the Sun, Mars and Saturn - are split across the 1st (Saturn) and the 7th (Sun, Mars). That is one half of Yava Yoga as BPHS words it, and the engine returns Yava, naming the Sun, Mars and Saturn.
  • Not Vajra: Vajra's matching half needs the benefics - Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus - in both the 1st and the 7th. Here all four are in the 7th, so the 1st holds no benefic and Vajra does not form.

A precision on the engine's own comment

The engine's comment on Vajra and Yava says that all seven grahas in the 1st and 7th form Shakata, Vajra and Yava together. This chart shows the condition behind that: each of the two follows only when its own group of planets occupies both houses. Here the malefics do and the benefics do not, so the engine correctly returns Shakata and Yava without Vajra. A Shakata chart in which both groups straddle the axis would return all three.

Shakata beside its neighbouring shapes

Shakata belongs to a small set of shapes that use only the angles. Seven grahas filling exactly two angles can do it in six ways: four neighbouring pairs, which are all Gada, and two opposite pairs, which are Shakata (1st and 7th) and Vihaga (4th and 10th). Filling all four angles gives Kamala Yoga. All seven in exactly three angles has no whole-chart shape name, though Vajra or Yava, which look at one group of planets at a time, can still form there. Shakata itself can never be Maala or Sarpa, because those need at least three occupied angles.

Within that set, the texts' readings do not follow the geometry in any simple way. Gada, two neighbouring angles, is read as effort rewarded; Kamala, all four, as one of the finest yogas in the chapter; Shakata and Vihaga, the two opposite pairs, as the two hardest. Neither BPHS nor Saravali explains why. The page reports the readings without supplying a reason the texts do not give.

One practical point follows from the Asraya overlap. Because the 1st and 7th signs always share a modality, a Shakata chart with a movable ascendant also shows Rajju, one with a fixed ascendant shows Musala, and one with a dual ascendant shows Nala. If your result lists Shakata, expect one of those three beside it; that is the rule's arithmetic, not a second, independent finding.

What a yoga does not tell you

Shakata names a configuration: the whole chart gathered on the ascendant-descendant axis. The texts' verdict on it is severe, the engine reports it in softer words, and neither is a forecast. The rule has no strength grade and no timing beyond "all times"; in the signed-in Kundali, which attaches Mahadasha windows to yogas with named planets, a shape yoga like this one is marked as a whole-chart pattern with no Mahadasha window of its own. A kendra-heavy chart is not a Shakata chart unless the exact shape holds.

Questions about Shakata Yoga

Is Shakata Yoga the same as Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon?
No. That is a later rule; Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 79) calls it Sakata. The Shakata of BPHS Ch. 35 and Saravali Ch. 21 is all seven grahas in the 1st and 7th houses. This app detects only the second.
What is the exact rule this app uses?
All seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn are in the 1st or the 7th house (whole signs from the ascendant), and each of those two houses holds at least one of them. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
How often does Shakata Yoga occur?
It fired in 0 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. The engine's deterministic walk first met it in January 2389, its 16,203rd moment.
The texts sound harsh. Should I worry if my chart has it?
The classical list is the texts' claim, and this app reframes it as a reason for extra care with health and support, not a fixed verdict. It is not medical advice, and no single yoga decides a life.
Why does a Shakata chart also show Yava or Vajra?
BPHS words Vajra and Yava with an "or": either group of planets in the right two angles is enough. Yava's malefic half is the Sun, Mars and Saturn across the 1st and 7th; Vajra's benefic half is the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus across the same two. A Shakata chart forms whichever halves its planets satisfy.
Does Shakata Yoga cancel the Asraya yoga it always comes with?
Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 7 says an Asraya yoga's effects give way when another Nabhasa yoga is present. The app reports both and applies no precedence.
