Yogas

Yava Yoga forms when the Sun, Mars and Saturn fill the 1st and 7th houses, or the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus fill the 4th and 10th. The BPHS "or" this app follows, Saravali's stricter wording, a name missing from BPHS's own list, and a 1999 chart.

In short

Yava Yoga is the mirror of Vajra: in BPHS Ch. 35 it forms when all the malefics among the seven grahas (Sun, Mars, Saturn) occupy the 1st and 7th houses, or all the benefics (Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) occupy the 4th and 10th, both houses held. Saravali requires both at once. It fired in 8 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.

Yava is the barley grain, and Yava Yoga is defined in BPHS by a single phrase: "a contrary situation" to Vajra Yoga. Where Vajra puts the benefics on the horizon axis and the malefics on the meridian, Yava swaps them. Both belong to the twenty Akriti, or shape, yogas of the Nabhasa family, and both are unusual in it because they look at one group of planets rather than all seven. This page gives the rule as coded, the textual disagreement over it, how often it fires, and a worked 1999 chart. For what a yoga can tell you in general, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Yava Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11, right after Vajra: "In a contrary situation, i.e. all benefics in Bandhu and Karm Bhava, or all malefics in Lagn and Yuvati Bhava, Yav Yog is generated." Bandhu and Karm are the 4th and 10th; Lagn and Yuvati the 1st and 7th. The engine tests two halves and reports Yava when either holds.

  1. Only the seven classical grahas count. The engine's benefics among them are the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus; its malefics the Sun, Mars and Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not considered.
  2. Benefic half: the four benefics all stand in the 4th or the 10th house (whole signs from the ascendant), each of the two holding at least one. The malefics may be anywhere.
  3. Malefic half: the three malefics all stand in the 1st or the 7th, each of the two holding at least one. The benefics may be anywhere.
  4. Either half suffices. The benefic half is tested first; the result names whichever group formed the yoga, and lists its planets.

No test of dignity, combustion or retrogression applies, and the benefic and malefic lists are fixed. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 would count a waning Moon, or a Mercury joined with a malefic, as malefic; the Yava sloka does not say whether that refinement applies, and the engine, as for Vajra, Maala and Sarpa, does not apply it.

What the classical texts say, and the name BPHS leaves out

Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 14 words Yava as the converse of its Vajra: "if malefics are in the Lagna and 7th, while 4th and 10th are occupied by benefics, Yava Yoga is produced." Its "while" joins the halves; BPHS's "or" separates them. The engine's comment records that it follows BPHS. Read Saravali's way, both halves together put all seven grahas in the four angles with every angle occupied - a Kamala chart. Kamala fired in 0 of the 3,000 sampled moments, so Saravali's Yava would have fired 0 times; BPHS's fired 8.

A gap in BPHS's own list

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 3-6 names the twenty Akriti yogas, and Yav is not among them. The list reaches twenty by giving "Ardh" and "Candr" as separate entries, where the rules later treat Ardha Chandra as one yoga. Yava then appears in the rules (Sl. 9-11) and the effects (Sl. 29). Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 2-4 includes Yava in its list of 32. Both translations of BPHS in the library read the same, so this looks like a feature of the text or its transmission rather than of one translation. The engine follows the rules, not the list.

On effects the books agree. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 29: one born in Yava Yoga observes fasts and religious rules, does auspicious acts, gains happiness, wealth and sons in mid-life, and is charitable and firm. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 27 adds lasting wealth and liberality. The timing is the mirror of Vajra's, which the texts make happy at the start and end of life. The engine's sentence: "Classically read as a disciplined, charitable and steady nature, with happiness, wealth and family classically coming in mid-life." The religious observances are the texts' description, not an instruction; this app prescribes none.

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 50 says Nabhasa results are felt in every dasha; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 20-21 that they act at all times. Neither ties Yava's "mid-life" to a planetary period. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from page images) sorts yogas into five groups - lagna, Raja, Chandra, Sun and Parivartana - with no Nabhasa section; the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology do not mention Yava. The yoga calculator page compares the whole Nabhasa family.

How rare it is

Yava fired in 8 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, about 0.3 percent - seven times from the malefic half and once from the benefic half. The sample is the engine-facts walk: New Delhi, from 1 January 1985, in steps of 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes.

Every Yava moment among the 3,000 sampled, from a scratchpad listing of detectYogas on the engine-facts walk, run 2026-10-13.

The lopsided split has a plain cause. The malefic half needs only three planets on the horizon axis, and the Sun is one of them; the benefic half needs four, with Mercury and Venus sharing a house because neither strays far from the Sun. The malefic half also puts the Sun in the 1st or 7th - on the horizon - so its moments fall around sunrise or after sunset: every one in the table is between 04:48 and 07:04 or between 17:37 and 19:58. The single benefic-half moment, at 23:30, has Mercury and Venus at the bottom of the chart with the Sun near them.

Worked example: a 1999 New Delhi chart

The first Yava moment of the walk is 26 April 1999 at 19:58 IST, New Delhi. You can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Libra at 26.8 degrees, so Libra is the 1st house and Aries, opposite, the 7th.

engine-facts.mjs yava-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Libra ascendant; Rahu (Cancer, 10th) and Ketu (Capricorn, 4th) do not count.
  1. Malefic half. Mars is in Libra, the 1st; the Sun and Saturn are in Aries, the 7th. All three malefics are in the 1st or 7th and both houses hold one. The half passes.
  2. Benefic half, for completeness. The benefics are in the 11th, 6th and 8th - none in the 4th or 10th. It fails, but one half is enough.
  3. The engine reports Yava Yoga naming the Sun, Mars and Saturn, with the meaning that all the natural malefics among the seven grahas sit in houses 1 and 7, both occupied.

The dignities show how little the rule cares about strength: in the 7th, the Sun is exalted in Aries and Saturn debilitated and combust beside it, and both count the same. Mercury's debilitation is likewise irrelevant. Under the stricter list of BPHS Ch. 3 nothing changes either, since neither the Moon nor Mercury sits with the malefics in the 1st or 7th.

Siblings on the same chart

  • Not Vajra: its benefic half needs the benefics in the 1st and 7th, and its malefic half the malefics in the 4th and 10th. Neither holds.
  • Not Shakata: the benefics are spread over the 6th, 8th and 11th, so not all seven grahas are in the 1st and 7th.
  • No Asraya yoga: the grahas are in five signs of mixed modality. Seven grahas in five signs give Pasa, the Sankhya yoga the engine returns beside Yava.
  • Not Maala or Sarpa: only two angles are occupied, and those need three.

When Yava arrives with Shakata, Vihaga or Vajra

The engine's comment notes that, because the halves are alternatives, all seven grahas in the 1st and 7th can form Shakata, Vajra and Yava together, and all seven in the 4th and 10th can form Vihaga, Vajra and Yava. Each of the two forms only when its own group occupies both houses. The engine's first Shakata chart, from 2389, shows it: the Sun and Mars stand in the 7th and Saturn in the 1st, so the malefics straddle the axis and Yava forms; the benefics are all in the 7th, so Vajra does not. Within the 1985-2060 sample, Yava never came with Shakata, Vihaga or Vajra. Both halves of Yava at once would be a Kamala chart.

What a yoga does not tell you

Yava names where one group of planets stands; the texts read it as a steady, observant life whose good fortune comes in the middle years, and this app reports that as their reading. It is not a forecast and has no strength grade. Because Yava names its planets, the signed-in Kundali can list the Mahadasha periods of the group that formed it - here the Sun, Mars and Saturn, as on the Saturn Mahadasha page. That is the app's lookup, not the texts' rule: they say Nabhasa results act at all times. A chart without Yava is not missing anything the texts promise elsewhere, and the "mid-life" of the sloka is not a date this app computes.

Questions about Yava Yoga

What is the rule for Yava Yoga in this app?
Either all three malefics among the seven grahas (Sun, Mars, Saturn) occupy the 1st and 7th houses with both held, or all four benefics (Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) occupy the 4th and 10th with both held. Either half forms it, as BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11 says with "or".
How does Yava differ from Vajra?
It is the reverse. Vajra is benefics on the 1st-7th axis or malefics on the 4th-10th; Yava is malefics on the 1st-7th or benefics on the 4th-10th. The texts give Vajra a happy start and end to life and Yava a happy middle.
How common is it?
It fired in 8 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, about 0.3 percent - seven times from the malefic half, once from the benefic half.
Why is Yava missing from the BPHS list of Akriti yogas?
BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 3-6 lists twenty names without Yav, reaching twenty by splitting "Ardh" and "Candr". The rule and effects for Yava still appear in Sl. 9-11 and Sl. 29, and Saravali lists it. The engine follows the rules.
Does Saravali agree with this rule?
Not quite. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 14 asks for malefics in the 1st and 7th while benefics hold the 4th and 10th - both halves together - which would make every Yava chart a Kamala chart. The engine uses BPHS's "or".
Does a strong or weak planet change whether Yava forms?
No. The rule is positional only. In the 1999 example the Sun is exalted and Saturn debilitated and combust in the same house, and both count equally toward the malefic half.
Can Yava form at any time of day?
The malefic half puts the Sun on the 1st-7th axis, so in the sample those moments all fell around sunrise or after sunset. The benefic half puts Mercury and Venus, and so usually the Sun nearby, at the top or bottom of the chart; its one sample moment was at 23:30.
Do the fasts and religious rules in the texts mean I should observe them?
No. That is part of the texts' description of the native, reported as their claim. This app does not prescribe observances or remedies for any yoga.

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
