Yogas

Yupa Yoga forms when all seven classical grahas occupy the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th houses, each of the four holding at least one. The rule from BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 12, its siblings Shara, Shakti and Danda, how often it fires, and a 1998 chart.

In short

Yupa Yoga is the Nabhasa shape in which all seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn fill the four houses beginning at the ascendant - the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th - with every one of them occupied. BPHS reads it as a spiritual, disciplined and distinguished nature. It fired in 5 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.

A yupa is the post set up for a Vedic sacrifice, and Yupa Yoga draws the chart as a short, solid column: all seven classical grahas packed into four neighbouring houses, starting at the ascendant. It opens a set of four related shapes in BPHS - Yupa, Shara, Shakti and Danda - which differ only in which angle the run of four houses begins from. Like every Akriti yoga of the Nabhasa family, it is about the distribution of all the planets together. This page gives the rule as coded, the classical reading, how often it fires and why, and a worked 1998 chart. For the general question of what a yoga amounts to, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Yupa Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13: "If all the 7 Grahas are in the 4 Bhavas, commencing from Lagn, they cause Yup Yog." Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 12 puts the four shapes together: the seven planets in four continuous houses counted from the Ascendant and its angles give Yupa, Sara (the arrow), Sakthi and Danda respectively. The engine tests:

  1. The seven classical grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not counted - BPHS says "all the 7 Grahas" in this very sloka.
  2. Houses are whole signs from the Lagna, so the four houses are the ascendant's sign and the next three signs.
  3. Every graha stands in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th house.
  4. Each of the four holds at least one graha.

No dignity, combustion, retrogression or lordship test applies. The fourth condition is the engine's standing reading of every shape rule: the named houses are the occupied ones. Without it, all seven grahas in the 1st alone would satisfy Yupa and four other shapes at once.

The same reading keeps Yupa apart from its longer cousin. Nauka Yoga (BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 14) is the same idea stretched to seven houses: all seven grahas in the 1st to 7th, every house occupied - one graha per house. A Yupa chart, with only four houses occupied, can never be Nauka, and the reverse holds too. The engine reads "in the 4 Bhavas" as exactly those four, so a chart that spreads into the 5th is neither.

Yupa and its three siblings

YogaFour houses filledBPHS wording

Shakti7, 8, 9, 10from Yuvati
Danda10, 11, 12, 1from Karm
BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13; the engine codes each as a run of four houses beginning at an angle.

The four runs share their end houses: Yupa's 4th is where Shara starts, and Danda ends in Yupa's 1st. Because each needs exactly four occupied houses, no chart can form two of them at once. Runs of four that start anywhere else - say the 2nd to the 5th - have no name in either text.

What the classical texts say: BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 32 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 37

Yupa is one of the gentler shapes. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 32 says one born in it will have spiritual knowledge and an interest in sacrificial rites, be endowed with a wife, be strong, keep fasts and other religious observances, and be distinguished. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 37 agrees on the fasts, vows and distinction and adds self-protection, charity, riches and happiness. Saravali Sl. 8-10 gives its general Akriti reading of contentment, income through a king and fame.

The engine compresses this to: "Classically read as a spiritual, disciplined and distinguished nature, drawn to ritual and religious observance." The fasts and rites are the texts' description of the native, not an instruction; this app prescribes no observance or remedy. The sibling shapes read very differently - BPHS gives Shara, Shakti and Danda some of the bleakest effects in the chapter - though the only difference in the rule is the angle the run begins at.

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 50 says Nabhasa results are felt through all dasha periods; Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 20-21 that they act at all times. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from page images) sorts yogas into five groups - lagna, Raja, Chandra, Sun and Parivartana - with no Nabhasa section; the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology do not state Yupa.

How rare it is

Yupa fired in 5 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, about 0.2 percent. The sample is the engine-facts walk: New Delhi, from 1 January 1985, in steps of 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes.

Yupa is rare, but much less rare than the shapes that spread the grahas around the chart, and the reason is the same astronomy read the other way. Mercury never strays more than about one sign from the Sun and Venus never more than about two, so the three naturally fall within a few neighbouring signs - exactly what a run of four houses can hold. The other four grahas then need to fall in the same stretch of four signs.

The times in the table show a second constraint. The Sun has to be in the first four houses, which lie below the eastern horizon or on it, so every Yupa moment falls in the hours before dawn or soon after: between 02:45 and 07:02. And because exactly four houses - four signs - are occupied, every Yupa chart is also Kedara Yoga, as all five are.

What the occupied-house reading costs

Yupa is where the engine's reading of "in the 4 Bhavas" makes the biggest visible difference. Searching the 3,000 moments for charts with all seven grahas confined to the 1st to 4th houses found 17. Only 5 of them had every one of the four houses occupied, and those are the five Yupa moments above. In the other 12 at least one house of the run was empty - in six of them the ascendant itself, with the grahas bunched in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, or fewer.

On a looser "confined to" reading, then, Yupa would have fired 17 times in the sample instead of 5. The engine takes the stricter reading for every Akriti yoga, and its comment gives the reason: the looser one would let one crowded house wear several shape names at once. A reader who takes the other view of BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13 will find Yupa in more than three times as many sample charts - a fair measure of how much an unstated detail in a sloka can matter.

Worked example: a 1998 New Delhi chart

The first Yupa moment of the walk is 31 March 1998 at 03:27 IST, New Delhi. You can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Capricorn at 18.61 degrees.

engine-facts.mjs yupa-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Capricorn ascendant.
  1. Count from Capricorn: Aquarius is the 2nd, Pisces the 3rd, Aries the 4th.
  2. Venus holds the 1st, Jupiter the 2nd, the Moon the 4th; the Sun, Mars, Mercury and Saturn crowd the 3rd. Every graha is inside the run and every house of it is occupied.
  3. Venus sits two signs behind the Sun, about as far as it gets; had it been one sign further back, in Sagittarius, the 12th, the shape would have failed.
  4. Ketu in the 2nd is inside the run and Rahu in the 8th outside it; neither matters.

The engine reports Yupa Yoga with the meaning "All 7 classical grahas (Sun through Saturn) sit in houses 1, 2, 3, 4 of your chart, and each of those houses holds at least one", followed by the reading quoted above. Mercury is debilitated, combust and retrograde, and three grahas are combust; the shape ignores all of it.

What else this chart forms, and what it cannot

  • Kedara Yoga, for seven grahas in four signs. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 16-17 would set it aside in favour of Yupa.
  • No Asraya yoga: four neighbouring signs always include all three modalities - here Capricorn and Aries are movable, Aquarius fixed, Pisces dual.
  • Not Shara, Shakti, Danda or Nauka; not Gada, which needs only two occupied houses; not Vajra or Yava, since the run holds no opposite pair of angles; not Maala or Sarpa, since only two angles are occupied.

The full detector also returns Anapha, Vasi, Amala, Argala Raj, Kendra-Kona Raj and Parivartana yogas here - separate rules about particular planets and lords. Argala Raj Yoga in fact came with all five Yupa moments in the sample; it rests on its own rule, covered on its own page, and the texts do not link the two.

That five-of-five is not luck; it follows from the two rules as the engine codes them. Argala Raj Yoga asks for unobstructed Argala to the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, judged by counting grahas: an Argala house must hold more than its obstructing house. In a Yupa chart the 2nd is occupied and the 12th empty, so the 1st has Argala. Counted from the 5th, its 11th is the 3rd (occupied) and its 3rd is the 7th (empty), so the 5th has Argala. Counted from the 9th, its 5th is the 1st (occupied) and its 9th is the 5th (empty), so the 9th has it too. Every Yupa chart therefore forms Argala Raj in this app. BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9 also allows the stronger graha to prevail over the more numerous, a test the engine does not apply, so on a full reading of that chapter the guarantee would not be automatic.

What a yoga does not tell you

Yupa says that all seven grahas sit in a short run of houses beginning at the ascendant. The texts read that as a spiritual, observant and distinguished life, and the app reports the reading as theirs. It is not a forecast, has no strength grade, and has no timing beyond "all times". In the signed-in Kundali, which attaches Mahadasha windows to yogas with named planets, a shape yoga is marked as a whole-chart pattern with no Mahadasha window of its own. A chart without Yupa is not missing anything the texts promise. And a chart with all seven grahas in the first four houses but one of them empty - twelve of the seventeen such moments in the sample - does not have a weaker Yupa: in this app it does not have Yupa at all, since neither text grades the shape by how nearly it is met.

Questions about Yupa Yoga

What is the rule for Yupa Yoga?
All seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn are in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th house (whole signs from the ascendant), and each of those four houses holds at least one. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
How is Yupa different from Shara, Shakti and Danda?
Only in where the run of four houses starts: the 1st for Yupa, the 4th for Shara, the 7th for Shakti and the 10th for Danda (BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13). The texts read the four very differently.
How often does Yupa Yoga occur?
It fired in 5 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, about 0.2 percent. Every one fell between 02:45 and 07:02, because the Sun has to be in the first four houses.
If all seven grahas are in the 1st to 3rd houses, is that Yupa?
No. In this app every one of the four houses must be occupied. A chart with the 4th empty is not Yupa, and since three houses beginning at the ascendant have no name of their own, it forms no Akriti yoga.
Why does a Yupa chart also show Kedara Yoga?
Four occupied houses are four occupied signs, which is Kedara. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 16-17 says a Sankhya yoga such as Kedara is not operable when another Nabhasa yoga forms; the app lists both.
Do the rites and fasts in the classical reading mean I should observe them?
No. They are part of the texts' description, reported as their claim. This app recommends no observances or remedies.

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
