Danda Yoga forms when all seven grahas fill the four houses from the 10th round to the 1st. The rule from BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13, how this app reframes one of the bleakest readings in the chapter, why most equally tight clusters get no name at all, and a 1985 chart that only just makes it.

In short

Danda Yoga is the Nabhasa shape in which all seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn occupy the 10th, 11th, 12th and 1st houses, each of the four holding at least one. It formed in 8 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. BPHS and Saravali give it a bleak reading, which this app reframes rather than repeats.

Danda is a staff or rod. Danda Yoga is the last of the four-house shapes in the classical list of Nabhasa yogas, and the only one whose block of houses wraps around the end of the chart: it starts at the 10th, runs through the 11th and 12th, and ends at the 1st. Like every Akriti yoga, it is a statement about the shape the seven grahas make together, not about any one of them. This page gives the rule as coded, the classical reading and how this app handles it, the rarity figures, and a worked chart that forms the yoga by about a minute. For the general question of what a yoga is worth, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Danda Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13: if all seven grahas are in the four bhavas commencing from Karm, the 10th house, Danda Yoga is formed. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 12 gives the same shape as the fourth of the series counted from the ascendant and its angles. The engine checks:

  1. The seven grahas - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are ignored.
  2. Houses are whole signs counted from the rising sign.
  3. Every graha is in the 10th, 11th, 12th or 1st house.
  4. Each of those four houses holds at least one.

The code builds the block with a small helper that counts four houses from the 10th and wraps from 12 back to 1, so "10, 11, 12, 1" is exactly what is tested. Dignity, combustion and aspects are not considered.

The readings the engine had to choose

  • Every house occupied. The sloka says only that the grahas "are in" the four bhavas. The engine also requires each bhava to hold one, for all Akriti yogas, so that one cluster cannot form several overlapping shapes at once.
  • Seven grahas, not nine. Saravali Ch. 21 speaks of "the seven planets", and the engine follows it. Including Rahu and Ketu would make every four-house shape impossible, since the nodes are always six signs apart.
  • All yogas reported. BPHS Sl. 16-17 makes the Sankhya yogas inoperable when another Nabhasa yoga forms; the engine records that and reports both, so a Danda chart also shows Kedara Yoga.

What the classical texts say, and how this app reframes it

Danda carries one of the bleakest readings in the Nabhasa chapter. BPHS Sl. 35 says the native "will lose sons and wife", will be indigent and unkind, live apart from his own people and serve mean persons. Saravali Sl. 40 gives nearly the same list - loss of wife and sons, poverty, being discarded by others and out of his circle, grief, service. The two texts agree closely here; there is no disagreement to report between them.

The engine's source code names this reading directly. In the comment above its Nabhasa detector, the implementer lists BPHS's Danda line as one of the "unusually bleak" originals that are reframed in the codebase's non-fear-based tone rather than reproduced. The sentence the app actually shows for the yoga is: "Classically read as a placement that classically asks for extra care in keeping family close and choosing whom to work for - worth tending deliberately, not a fixed verdict."

That sentence keeps the two themes the texts share - family and employment - and turns a list of losses into a pointer to where attention might go. It is a deliberate editorial choice, and this page states it as one. No yoga in this app is presented as a fixed outcome, and a classical reading of loss is not something a chart shape can establish about a real family.

For context, Saravali Sl. 8-10 gives Akriti yogas as a class a mild general reading - contentment with one's own fortune, earning through a king, some fame - and both texts say the Nabhasa results run through all periods rather than any one dasha (BPHS Sl. 50, Saravali Sl. 20-21). Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention Danda Yoga.

How rare it is - and the tight clusters that get no name

Danda Yoga formed in 8 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 0.3 percent, and 30 times across the full 20,000-moment walk (1985 to 2483). Because Mercury and Venus stay within about one and two signs of the Sun, the Sun is always inside such a cluster; Danda needs it in the 10th to 1st houses, which in whole signs means roughly the hours from sunrise to noon. The engine's first four Danda moments were at 09:26, 06:48, 09:37 and 09:14 IST.

A less obvious point comes from counting every way the seven grahas can fill four consecutive houses. BPHS names only the four blocks that start at a kendra - the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th. A block that starts anywhere else forms no Akriti yoga at all. On the engine's positions for the same 3,000 moments, all seven grahas filled some block of four consecutive houses 81 times. Only 30 of those started at a kendra and earned a name (Yupa, Shara, Shakti or Danda); the other 51 started at one of the eight other houses and are, in the yoga list, simply Kedara Yoga.

Counted with a scratch script on engine positions (writers/akriti-dala/shapes.mjs). Small counts; not a ranking.

The seven-house shapes are handled differently: there, BPHS (quoting Saravali) gives the eight non-angular starting points a name of their own, Ardha Chandra. For four-house blocks the texts leave them unnamed, and the engine does the same rather than invent one.

Worked example: 13 December 1985, by a minute

The first moment in the engine's walk that forms Danda Yoga is 13 December 1985 at 09:26 IST, New Delhi. You can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Capricorn at 0.16 degrees - it has only just entered the sign. Counting whole signs from Capricorn, Libra is the 10th house, Scorpio the 11th, Sagittarius the 12th and Capricorn itself the 1st.

engine-facts.mjs danda-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Capricorn ascendant.
  1. All seven inside houses 10, 11, 12 and 1: Mars in the 10th; Mercury, Saturn, Venus and the Sun in the 11th; the Moon in the 12th; Jupiter in the 1st. Holds.
  2. Every house occupied: one, four, one, one. Holds.
  3. Ketu in the 10th and Rahu in the 4th are not counted.
  4. No other Akriti shape fits, since only these four houses are occupied.

The engine reports: "All 7 classical grahas (Sun through Saturn) sit in houses 10, 11, 12, 1 of your chart, and each of those houses holds at least one - a Nabhasa "Akriti" (shape) Yoga." The interpretation line is the reframed family-and-work sentence quoted above. The Sun in the 11th house fits the clock: mid-morning.

Now move the clock back one minute. At 09:25 the engine puts the ascendant at Sagittarius 29.89 degrees. Every graha is where it was, but every house number shifts by one: Libra becomes the 11th, Scorpio the 12th, Sagittarius the 1st and Capricorn the 2nd. The seven still fill four consecutive houses, but the block now starts at the 11th - one of the unnamed starting points above - and the engine reports no Danda Yoga. That is the practical meaning of a whole-sign shape yoga: it depends on the birth time to the minute when the ascendant is near a sign boundary. If your recorded time is uncertain, the Lagna calculator will show you how close your ascendant is to the edge.

Two more details. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn in the 1st house, and Venus is combust - neither affects the shape, because the rule never looks at condition. And the engine's full report for 09:26 lists Durudhura, Vasi, Kedara, Danda, the 5th and 9th lords' Raja Yoga, Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga and Parivartana Yoga (Mars in Venus's sign and Venus in Mars's). The 09:25 report keeps most of those, loses Danda and the Raja Yoga, and gains Harsha Yoga - a single minute rearranges the house lordships as well as the shape.

Danda among its siblings

The other blocks in BPHS Sl. 13 are Yupa (1 to 4), Shara (4 to 7) and Shakti (7 to 10). Extend the Danda block from four houses to seven, still starting at the 10th, and the shape becomes Chapa Yoga. Danda holds two kendras, the 10th and the 1st, never three, so it can never coincide with the kendra-based Dala yogas, Maala and Sarpa.

What a yoga does not tell you

Danda Yoga tells you that the seven grahas were packed into the four houses around the eastern horizon and the midheaven at the moment of birth - and, as the example shows, that the moment may be a matter of a minute. The classical reading attached to it is severe; this app keeps its themes and drops its verdict. Neither version is a prediction about a family, a marriage or a career. A yoga is a named rule about positions, and this one is a rare geometric coincidence of the morning sky.

To test your own chart for Danda and the other Nabhasa shapes, run the yoga calculator; it lists the house of every graha so you can check the block yourself.

Questions about Danda Yoga

What is the rule for Danda Yoga?
All seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn in the 10th, 11th, 12th and 1st houses, with each of the four holding at least one. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 12.
Does Danda Yoga mean losing family?
That is the classical reading in BPHS Sl. 35 and Saravali Sl. 40. This app does not repeat it as a verdict; it reads the yoga as a placement that asks for extra care with family and with whom one works for, and treats it as a rule about positions, not a forecast.
How common is Danda Yoga?
Rare: 8 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (0.3 percent). It occurs only with the Sun in the 10th to 1st houses, roughly between sunrise and noon.
All my planets are in the 11th, 12th, 1st and 2nd houses. Is that Danda?
No. BPHS names only the four-house blocks that start at a kendra. A block from the 11th has no name in the texts, and the engine reports no Akriti yoga for it - only the Sankhya yoga for four occupied signs, Kedara.
Why did the yoga disappear when I changed my birth time by a minute?
Because houses are whole signs from the ascendant. If the ascendant is close to a sign boundary, a minute can move it into the next sign and renumber every house. The worked example does exactly that between 09:25 and 09:26.
Why does the Danda block include the 1st house?
Because the twelve houses form a circle. Counting four houses from the 10th gives the 10th, 11th, 12th and then the 1st again, exactly as counting four from the 1st gives Yupa's 1st to 4th. BPHS says "commencing from Karm" and Saravali counts the four series from the ascendant and its angles, so the wrap is part of the rule, not an engine choice.
Does a debilitated planet in the block cancel Danda Yoga?
No. The rule looks only at which houses are occupied. In the example Jupiter is debilitated in the 1st and the yoga still forms.
