In short
In this app, Raja Yoga means one specific rule: the lord of the 5th house and the lord of the 9th house sitting together in the same house. The rule comes from Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, which lists the pair for every ascendant; the engine applies it in any house, with no dignity test. It fired in 331 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.
"Raja Yoga" is used loosely for dozens of combinations, and the texts give far more of them than any engine could reasonably test. This app reports one rule under that plain name: the lords of the 5th house and the 9th house - the two trikonas other than the ascendant - in the same house. This page says where that rule comes from, why the engine chose it, exactly how it is tested, how often it fires and what a worked chart looks like. For what any yoga is worth in general, see what a yoga in your chart means.
The rule: how this Raja Yoga forms
- Find the lord of the 5th house and the lord of the 9th, counting whole signs from the ascendant.
- If the two stand in the same house - any house - the engine reports Raja Yoga, naming both lords and the house.
That is all. There is no requirement that the shared house be a kendra or trikona, no dignity or combustion test, and no aspect or exchange alternative. Because the 5th and 9th signs from any ascendant are four signs apart, and no planet rules two signs four apart, the two lords are always different planets: this rule never has the one-planet case that affects Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga.
Why only this one "Raja Yoga"
The engine comment explains the choice. BPHS's Raj Yog chapter (Ch. 39) opens with rules built on the Atma and Putra karakas and the Lagna and 5th lords, and continues through dozens of conditions, many needing systems the engine does not build; Saravali's Raja Yoga chapter is mostly one-off royal configurations naming exact signs. Rather than pick among thirty competing rules, the engine took a single settled, ascendant-independent rule from Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara and reports only that under the name. The broader kendra-kona principle from BPHS is reported separately as the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga.
What the classical texts say
Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (Rama R. Rao, 1994) is an image-only scan in the library, read here from its page images. Its Raja Yoga section (p. 148) is short: "When there is a conjunction of the rulers of the trikona houses, namely the 5th and 9th houses, in the natal chart, Raja Yoga is believed to be present." It adds that the effects are felt most in the areas of the house the two planets occupy, in the areas each planet signifies, and during their dasa and antardasa periods. It then gives the pair for every ascendant (pp. 148-149), and closes the section (p. 150) with a modern gloss: such yogas, which once meant kingship, should now be taken as indications of opportunities to live in comfort and happiness.
BPHS supplies the reasoning behind the rule without stating it in these words. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the lord of a kona gives auspicious results and that the 5th and 9th are "specially for wealth". Its yoga rule (Sl. 11-12) is framed as a kendra lord with a kona lord, and the 5th and 9th lords are both kona lords, so the engine's rule is a sibling of BPHS's rather than an instance of it. Ch. 39 Sl. 3-5 begins the Raj Yoga chapter with the Lagna lord and the 5th lord. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not state a 5th-and-9th rule; Advanced Predictive Astrology names many Raja Yogas from lord pairs in its case studies without giving this one as a general rule.
Timing is the source's claim, not the engine's
Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's remark that the yoga acts most in its planets' dasa and antardasa periods is the clearest timing statement for any yoga on this site. The engine reports the yoga's presence; other parts of the app compute the dashas, but the yoga itself makes no dated claim.
The pair for each ascendant
The book's table and the engine's arithmetic agree for every ascendant. The right-hand column is how often each case fired in the engine's 3,000-moment sample.
| Ascendant | 5th lord | 9th lord | Moments (of 331) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun | Jupiter | 20 |
| Taurus | Mercury | Saturn | 25 |
| Gemini | Venus | Saturn | 30 |
| Cancer | Mars | Jupiter | 25 |
| Leo | Jupiter | Mars | 21 |
| Virgo | Saturn | Venus | 18 |
| Libra | Saturn | Mercury | 22 |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Moon | 25 |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Sun | 31 |
| Capricorn | Venus | Mercury | 58 |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Venus | 48 |
| Pisces | Moon | Mars | 8 |
Capricorn and Aquarius rising stand out because their pair is Venus and Mercury, two planets that never stray far from the Sun and so are often in the same sign. Pisces rising is lowest: its pair includes the Moon, which spends only a few days in any sign, so it meets Mars there briefly.
What else the two lords rule
Most planets rule two signs, so the 5th and 9th lords usually rule another house too, and BPHS cares about that. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 says lords of kendras or konas that also own an evil house do not cause Raj Yoga "by mere relations", and Sl. 13 treats a planet that rules a kona and a kendra as specially favourable. Neither text applies these to the 5th-and-9th rule directly, and the engine applies neither, but the arithmetic is worth seeing:
| Ascendant | 5th lord also rules | 9th lord also rules |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | - (Sun rules one sign) | 12th |
| Taurus | 2nd | 10th (a kendra) |
| Gemini | 12th | 8th |
| Cancer | 10th (a kendra) | 6th |
| Leo | 8th | 4th (a kendra) |
| Virgo | 6th | 2nd |
| Libra | 4th (a kendra) | 12th |
| Scorpio | 2nd | - (Moon rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | 12th | - (Sun rules one sign) |
| Capricorn | 10th (a kendra) | 6th |
| Aquarius | 8th | 4th (a kendra) |
| Pisces | - (Moon rules one sign) | 2nd |
Only for Taurus, Scorpio and Pisces rising is neither lord also a lord of a dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th). A reader who applies BPHS Sl. 15 strictly would discount the yoga for the other nine ascendants; one who applies Sl. 13 would give extra weight to the cases where a kendra lordship is involved. The app reports all twelve alike.
How rare it is
The yoga fired in 331 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 - 11 percent, about one chart in nine. Because the engine accepts any house, the shared house varies widely: the 2nd and 7th held the pair 36 times each, the 11th 32, the 5th 30, the 3rd 29, the 6th and 12th 27 each, the 4th, 9th and 10th 25 each, the 1st 20 and the 8th 19. In 73 of the 331 moments the two trikona lords were together in a dusthana - the 6th, 8th or 12th.
Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara says the house occupied colours the result, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 15 warns that lords tied to evil houses do not give Raj Yoga by mere relation; the engine reports these cases like any other. Only 75 of the 331 - the 1st, 5th and 9th (20, 30 and 25) - had the two kona lords together in a kona, and 106 had them in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th: 20, 25, 36 and 25), with the 1st counted in both. A reader who wants the stricter, Dharma-Karmadhipati-style condition that the shared house be angular or trinal would keep 161 of the 331 (the six houses 1, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10).
Worked example: a 1985 New Delhi chart
The first moment in the engine's walk with this yoga is 24 March 1985 at 05:33 IST in New Delhi. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator to check. The ascendant is Aquarius at 21.28 degrees.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| 5th house | Gemini - lord Mercury |
| 9th house | Libra - lord Venus |
| Mercury | Pisces 24.97, house 2, debilitated |
| Venus | Pisces 26.51, house 2, exalted, retrograde |
| Sun | Pisces 9.65, house 2 |
| Shared house | 2nd - neither a kendra nor a trikona |
Mercury and Venus are both in Pisces, the 2nd house, so the engine reports Raja Yoga with the sentence "Mercury and Venus both sit in your 2nd house - classically one of the clearest markers of sustained, life-long good fortune." The chart shows the rule's permissiveness on two counts. The shared house is the 2nd, not an angle or trine - the engine does not ask. And the two lords are at opposite ends of dignity in the same sign: Venus exalted in Pisces, Mercury debilitated there. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara would read the result through the 2nd house's affairs and through these two planets' periods; the engine leaves both to the reader. The same chart also returns Anapha, Vesi, Kedara, Argala Raj and the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga.
This Raja Yoga beside its neighbours
The engine has three lordship yogas that are easily confused. This one joins the two kona lords. Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga joins the 9th lord with the 10th lord, and requires the shared house to be a kendra or trikona. The Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga joins any kendra lord with any kona lord, by conjunction or mutual aspect. Because the ascendant is both a kendra and a kona, the 5th-and-9th pair can overlap with a Kendra-Kona link only when one of the pair also rules the ascendant or another kendra. Parivartana Yoga covers sign exchanges, including a 5th-9th exchange, which this rule does not count. For the wider family see the Raja Yoga glossary entry.
What the rule does and does not establish
This Raja Yoga establishes that the two trikona lords share a house. Its source reads that as fortune shaped by the house and the planets involved, felt most in their periods, and itself softens the old royal language to "opportunities for living like a king, in comfort and happiness". The engine tests the conjunction and nothing more. A yoga is a named rule about positions, not a promise, and a chart without this one lacks nothing the texts guarantee elsewhere.

Questions about the 5th and 9th lord Raja Yoga
- Is this the only Raja Yoga the app checks?
- It is the only one reported under the plain name "Raja Yoga". The app also reports Dharma-Karmadhipati, the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga, Argala Raj Yoga and the three Vipareeta Raja Yogas, each under its own name.
- Does the shared house have to be good?
- Not in this app. The engine reports the conjunction in any house. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara says the house colours the result; in the sample, 73 of 331 cases were in the 6th, 8th or 12th.
- Which planets form it for my ascendant?
- The 5th and 9th lords, listed in the table above. For Capricorn rising it is Venus and Mercury, for Aries the Sun and Jupiter, for Scorpio Jupiter and the Moon.
- Does an exchange or aspect between the two lords count?
- No. Only conjunction in one house. An exchange is reported as Parivartana Yoga.
- How common is it?
- It fired in 331 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 in this engine, or 11 percent.
- When does it act?
- Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara says most during the dasa and antardasa of the two planets. That is the source's view; the app reports the yoga's presence, not a dated forecast.
- Why is it called just "Raja Yoga" in the app?
- Because it is the rule Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara gives under that heading. The engine chose this single, settled rule rather than one of the many competing Raj Yoga rules in BPHS Ch. 39 and Saravali's Raja Yoga chapter.
- Does the dignity of the two lords matter?
- Not to the engine. In the worked example one lord is exalted and the other debilitated in the same sign, and the yoga is reported all the same. The texts ask for the planets' strength and the house to be weighed.
- Should I do anything about it?
- No. It is a named rule about positions. This app does not prescribe remedies.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
