In short
The Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga is formed in this app when a lord of a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) and a lord of a kona (the 1st, 5th or 9th) are in the same house or aspect each other mutually, following BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 28. Because the ascendant lord counts on both sides and oppositions are common, it fired in 2,511 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.
BPHS calls the four angles of a chart the places of Vishnu and the three trines the places of Lakshmi, and says that when a lord of one meets a lord of the other, a Raj Yoga arises. That is the most general Raja Yoga principle in the text, and this app tests a version of it under the name "Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona)". This page sets out the rule exactly as the engine applies it, what BPHS actually lists, and one striking fact about it: in the engine's sample it fired in more than four charts out of five. The general question of what a yoga is worth is treated in what a yoga in your chart means; this page goes deeper into one rule.
The rule: how the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga forms
- List the kendra lords - the planets ruling the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses - and the kona lords - those ruling the 1st, 5th and 9th. Houses are whole signs from the ascendant.
- Pair every kendra lord with every kona lord, skipping a planet paired with itself.
- A pair is linked if the two are in the same house (any house), or if each casts an aspect on the other's house - a mutual aspect.
- If any pair is linked, the engine reports one Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) and lists every linked pair, each once, as "together" or "in mutual aspect".
Aspects are the engine's whole-sign set: every planet aspects the 7th sign from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th; Jupiter the 5th and 9th; Saturn the 3rd and 10th (the special aspects). For a mutual aspect both directions must hold, which in practice means two lords in opposite signs - each aspecting the other by the 7th - or Mars with Saturn in the 4th sign from it, where Mars's 4th aspect and Saturn's 10th aspect meet. No other special-aspect combination is mutual.
How the rule was tightened
The engine comment records three revisions. The first version counted a one-way 7th-house aspect as a "relationship"; since every planet has that aspect, the yoga fired several times over on almost every chart. It was tightened to conjunction or a genuinely mutual aspect, and all qualifying pairs were folded into a single entry so that a chart reads as having one Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga with several links, not a list of near-identical yogas. Later, a 1990 London chart showed a pair listed twice in reverse order, because a planet that rules both a kendra and a kona appears in both lists; the engine now reports each pair once.
What the classical texts say
The engine cites BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 28: the kendras are "Vishnu Sthanas" and the konas "Lakshmi Sthanas", and "if the Lord of a Kendr establishes a relationship with the Lord of a Kon, a Raj Yog is obtained". The sloka does not say what a relationship is. BPHS says that earlier, in Ch. 34 "Yoga Karakas", Sl. 11-12, which lists four relations between a kendra lord and a kona lord, any of which "cause a Yog" - the person "will become a king and be famous":
| Relation in BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 | Tested by the engine? |
|---|---|
| An exchange of signs between the two lords | No (reported separately as Parivartana Yoga) |
| The two "yuti" (together) in a kendra or a kona | Yes, and more widely: together in any house |
| A kona lord placed in a kendra, or a kendra lord in a kona | No |
| A full mutual aspect between them | Yes |
So the engine tests two of the four relations, and widens one of them: BPHS asks for the conjunction to be in a kendra or a kona, while the engine accepts it in any house. Ch. 34 then qualifies the whole rule. Sl. 13 says one planet ruling both a kona and a kendra is specially a Yoga Karaka; Sl. 15 says that if the kendra or kona lords also own an evil house, they do not cause Raj Yoga "by mere relations". The engine does not apply Sl. 15, and it skips the single-planet case of Sl. 13 rather than reporting it.
Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (read from its page images, p. 150) adds a modern framing: the many Raja Yogas of the old texts should now be read as opportunities to live in comfort, and their rationale is simply several well-placed planets in angles and trines. Advanced Predictive Astrology lists "Raja Yogas generated by the union of kendra and trikona lords" first among the combinations it has seen in eminent people's charts (Vol. II, p. 209), without a count. The engine's own sentence for the yoga reads: "A general Raj Yoga: classically read as a strong, reliable marker of authority and standing, since it links the houses of power (Kendra) directly with the houses of fortune (Kona)."
How rare it is - and why it is not
In the engine's sample the yoga fired in 2,511 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 - 83.7 percent. It is by a wide margin the most common yoga this app reports. Two features of the rule make that almost inevitable.
- The ascendant lord is on both lists. The 1st house is a kendra and a kona at once, so its lord is paired with every other kendra and kona lord - up to five partners. Any of them sharing its house or opposing it forms the yoga. See the 1st house page for why the ascendant is counted both ways.
- Conjunction is accepted in any house, and Mercury and Venus, which often rule a kendra or kona, travel with the Sun, which often rules another. Several of the engine's most frequent pairs are just the Sun's companions sitting with it.
| Linked pairs in one chart | Moments |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1,270 |
| 2 | 649 |
| 3 | 407 |
| 4 | 104 |
| 5 | 51 |
| 6 | 24 |
| 8 | 2 |
| 9 | 4 |
Across all those moments the engine recorded 3,012 links by conjunction and 1,644 by mutual aspect. About half the charts with the yoga have a single link; a few have eight or nine. A rule that fires in five charts out of six cannot by itself separate one chart from another, and this page says so plainly. What carries information is which lords are linked, how, and in which house - the details the engine lists. Read those, not the headline, when you look at your own result.
Worked example: the first moment of the walk
The engine's deterministic search begins at 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi, and that very first moment has the yoga. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Scorpio at 28.81 degrees.
| House (sign) | Lord | Kendra or kona? | Lord sits in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Scorpio) | Mars | both | house 4, Aquarius |
| 4 (Aquarius) | Saturn | kendra | house 1, Scorpio |
| 5 (Pisces) | Jupiter | kona | house 2, Sagittarius |
| 7 (Taurus) | Venus | kendra | house 4, Aquarius |
| 9 (Cancer) | Moon | kona | house 6, Aries |
| 10 (Leo) | Sun | kendra | house 2, Sagittarius |
- Kendra lords: Mars, Saturn, Venus, Sun. Kona lords: Mars, Jupiter, Moon.
- Venus (7th lord) and Mars (1st lord) are both in house 4: linked, together.
- The Sun (10th lord) and Jupiter (5th lord) are both in house 2: linked, together.
- No other pair shares a house, and no pair stands in opposite signs or in the Mars-Saturn 4th/10th pattern: Saturn in house 1 has Mars in house 4, which is the 4th from Saturn, not the 4th from Mars.
The engine reports the yoga with the sentence "A Kendra (angle) lord and a Kona (trine) lord are directly linked: Venus and Mars together; Sun and Jupiter together." Now apply BPHS Ch. 34 strictly. Mars also rules the 6th (Aries) and Venus the 12th (Libra), so under Sl. 15 the Venus-Mars link is a relation between lords of evil houses and does not by itself give Raj Yoga. The Sun-Jupiter link involves clean lords - the Sun rules only the 10th, Jupiter the 2nd and 5th - but the two are together in the 2nd house, and Sl. 11-12 asks for the conjunction to be in a kendra or a kona. On a strict BPHS reading, then, neither link in this chart qualifies; on the engine's reading, both do. Jupiter is also combust here, which no version of the rule tests.
The same chart has a Parivartana exchange - one of the BPHS relations the engine reports under that name instead - plus Vasi and Kedara.
Kendra-Kona beside its neighbouring yogas
Two narrower lordship rules are special cases or siblings. Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga is the 10th lord with the 9th lord, together in a kendra or kona - every two-lord instance of it is also a Kendra-Kona link. The Raja Yoga of the 5th and 9th lords joins two kona lords, which this rule does not pair unless one of them also rules a kendra. Parivartana Yoga reports exchanges, which BPHS counts as the first kendra-kona relation. A single planet that rules both a kendra and a kona - BPHS's Yoga Karaka - is a separate idea; see yogakaraka.
What the rule does and does not establish
The Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga, as coded, establishes that at least one angle lord shares a house with, or opposes, at least one trine lord. BPHS reads such relations as rank and fame, then limits them by evil-house ownership and by where the conjunction falls; the engine applies the relation without those limits and reports which links it found. Because it fires in most charts, its presence alone says little; the linked pairs it lists say more. A yoga is a named rule about positions, not a promise.

Questions about the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga
- Why does almost every chart have this Raj Yoga?
- Because the ascendant lord counts as both a kendra and a kona lord, conjunction in any house is accepted, and any two lords in opposite signs aspect each other. In the engine's sample it fired in 2,511 of 3,000 moments.
- Does a sign exchange between a kendra and kona lord count?
- Not under this name. BPHS Ch. 34 counts it, and the engine reports it as Parivartana Yoga.
- Does the conjunction have to be in a kendra or kona?
- BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says so. The engine accepts the conjunction in any house.
- What if one of the lords also rules the 6th, 8th or 12th?
- BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 15 says such lords do not cause Raj Yoga by mere relation. The engine does not apply this.
- Which special aspects can make a mutual aspect?
- Only Mars and Saturn with Saturn in the 4th sign from Mars: Mars aspects the 4th, Saturn the 10th. Otherwise a mutual aspect means the two lords are in opposite signs.
- Is it the same as Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga?
- No. Dharma-Karmadhipati is one specific pair, the 9th and 10th lords, and needs the shared house to be a kendra or kona. This rule covers every kendra-kona pair.
- Why does my result list several pairs?
- The engine gathers every linked kendra-kona pair into one entry. In the sample, about half the charts with the yoga had one link, and a few had eight or nine. Each pair is listed once, with "together" or "in mutual aspect".
- Does the engine grade the yoga?
- No. It reports the links it found and one sentence for the yoga. It does not weigh the lords' dignity, their other houses, or the house in which they meet; those are the questions BPHS Ch. 34 raises and leaves to the reader.
- Are Rahu and Ketu counted?
- No. The nodes rule no sign in this engine, so they are never kendra or kona lords and cannot form a link.
- Should I do anything about it?
- No. It is a named rule about positions. This app does not prescribe remedies.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
