In short
A Trikona, or Kona, is a trine house: the 1st, 5th and 9th from the Ascendant. BPHS calls the 5th and 9th Kona and treats the 1st as both an angle and a trine. This app labels the 5th and 9th "trikona house" and uses the lords of all three in its Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga test.
What the term means
Trikona means "triangle". The trine houses are the 1st, 5th and 9th, each four signs from the next, so the three form a triangle in the chart. Classical texts often shorten the word to Kona. The 1st belongs to two groups at once: it is a Kendra as well as a trine. Counted from the Ascendant in this app's whole-sign houses, the 5th and 9th are simply the 5th and 9th signs from the rising sign.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 says "Putr and Dharm Bhava are known by the name Kon", the 5th and the 9th. Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 groups Kendras and Konas as the auspicious Bhavas. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 is about lordship: the lord of a Kon gives auspicious results, the Lagna lord is specially so because the 1st is both a Kendra and a Kon, and the 5th and 9th are named as houses for wealth. Sl. 13 then calls a graha that owns both a Kon and a Kendra "specially a Yog Karak".
How this app uses it
- The engine's trine list is houses 1, 5 and 9. Because the Kendra test runs first, the strength table prints "trikona house" for the 5th and 9th only. For a 1990-05-15, 10:30 IST Mumbai chart with Cancer rising, it reads Venus as "exalted in Pisces, trikona house (9th)".
- Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga takes the lords of the 1st, 5th and 9th as Kona lords and looks for one joined to, or in mutual aspect with, a Kendra lord.
- A separate yoga tests the 5th and 9th lords together, and a sign exchange (Parivartana) is read as the good kind when both grahas rule a Kendra or a Trikona.
- The word has a second, sign-based use in the Ashtakavarga: Trikona Shodhana (BPHS Ch. 67) reduces points across the fixed sign trines, Aries-Leo-Sagittarius and the rest, not across houses.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
