In short
Shakti Yoga is the Nabhasa shape in which all seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn occupy the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th houses, every one of the four holding at least one. It formed in only 3 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. BPHS reads it as long-lived and Saravali as short-lived, and this app follows BPHS.
Shakti is a spear, and also strength, and Shakti Yoga is the third of the four-house shapes in the classical list of Nabhasa yogas. It is a yoga of pure geometry: the seven grahas pack into the four houses that begin at the 7th, the descendant, and run up to the 10th, the top of the chart. The page below states the rule exactly as this app tests it, sets the two classical readings side by side - they disagree on a point that matters - and works through the first chart in the engine's sample that forms it. The general case for reading any yoga cautiously is made in what a yoga in your chart means.
The rule: how Shakti Yoga forms
BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13 states it in a clause: if all seven grahas are in the four bhavas commencing from Yuvati (the 7th house), Shakti Yoga occurs. In the engine that becomes four conditions.
- The seven grahas are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
- Houses are whole signs from the ascendant.
- All seven are in the 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th house.
- Each of those four houses holds at least one of them.
There is no test of dignity, combustion or aspect. If the seven are arranged that way, the yoga forms; if one graha is outside the block or one house inside it is empty, it does not.
The fourth condition is a reading, not a quotation
The sloka says the grahas "are in" the four bhavas. It does not say that each bhava must hold one. The engine requires it anyway, for every Akriti shape, and the code records why: if a block of houses only had to contain the grahas, a tight cluster would satisfy several overlapping blocks at once and form several shapes together. The difference is measurable. In the 3,000-moment sample, all seven grahas were confined to houses 7 to 10 in 16 moments, but filled all four in only 3. Under the looser reading the yoga would have been reported in 16 moments instead of 3 - and many of those clusters would also have counted as other shapes.
Two further choices follow the code's general Nabhasa rules. The shadow planets are left out because Saravali Ch. 21 speaks of "the seven planets". And every Nabhasa yoga that forms is reported, even though BPHS Sl. 16-17 says the Sankhya yogas are not operable when another Nabhasa yoga is present.
What the classical texts say: one sloka, two opposite words
The rule is the same in both texts. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 12 names the four shapes counted from the ascendant and its angles - Yupa, Sara, Sakthi and Danda - in the same order as BPHS Sl. 13. The readings attached to it are close, word for word, except in one place.
| BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 34 | Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 39 | |
|---|---|---|
| Wealth | bereft of wealth, unsuccessful | devoid of wealth |
| Temperament | miserable, mean, lazy | subjected to grief, mean, lazy |
| Life span | "long lived" | "short-lived" |
| Conflict | interested and skilful in war | expert in war |
| Other | firm and auspicious | deformed; beautiful |
The two lists are clearly the same tradition. Most items match, and the order is similar. On life span they say opposite things. The corpus cannot tell us whether this goes back to different manuscripts or to a slip in one translation, and this page does not guess. What can be said is which way this app went: its sentence for the yoga reads "Classically read as a long life, firmness and skill in contest, though material success classically needs extra persistence." That follows BPHS on longevity and keeps both texts' point about wealth, softened from a verdict into a note about effort. This app makes no claim about anyone's life span from a yoga, and neither reading should be taken as one.
For the class as a whole, Saravali Sl. 8-10 says a native with an Akriti yoga is content with his own fortune, earns through a king and becomes known. Both texts put the Nabhasa results outside the dasha system: BPHS Sl. 50 says they are felt in all periods, and Saravali Sl. 20-21 that they work independently of the dashas. The library's other texts - Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras - say nothing about Shakti Yoga.
How rare it is: an afternoon shape
Shakti Yoga formed in 3 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 0.1 percent. Over the full 20,000-moment walk (1985 to 2483) it formed 47 times. The first of those is in 2020; the sample simply did not meet it before then, which says more about how rarely the slow planets bunch together than about any particular decade.
What has to line up first
A four-house cluster of all seven grahas needs the slow planets to cooperate before anything else. Saturn spends years in a sign and Jupiter about a year, so the two of them, together with Mars, must already sit within four consecutive signs of each other; for most of any decade they do not, and no hour of any day can then produce the shape. In the worked example below, Jupiter is in Sagittarius and Saturn in Capricorn, neighbouring signs, with Mars one sign behind Jupiter. Once that bunching exists, the Sun has to arrive at the right part of the zodiac to join them, bringing Mercury and Venus with it, and the Moon - which spends only two or three days in each sign - has to be inside the block as well. Only then does the rising sign decide which of the four-house shapes, if any, the cluster makes.
The hour matters as much as the year. Mercury never strays more than about one sign from the Sun, and Venus no more than about two, so in any four-house cluster of all seven grahas the Sun is inside the block. Shakti puts the block in houses 7 to 10. With whole-sign houses the Sun sits in the 10th around midday and in the 7th around sunset, so the shape belongs to the afternoon. The engine's first four Shakti moments were at 13:02, 15:08, 14:53 and 14:15 IST.
The block also fixes the sign count: four houses are four signs, so a Shakti chart always has exactly four signs occupied and always shows Kedara Yoga as well. The 7th and 10th are both kendras, but only two of the four, which is why Shakti can never coincide with Maala or Sarpa, both of which need three.
Worked example: 25 January 2020, early afternoon
Take 25 January 2020 at 13:02 IST in New Delhi. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator to check every figure. The ascendant is Taurus at 3.67 degrees, so Scorpio is the 7th house, Sagittarius the 8th, Capricorn the 9th and Aquarius the 10th.
| Graha | Sign and degree | House | Engine notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mars | Scorpio 20.72 | 7 | Own sign |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius 18.10 | 8 | Own sign |
| Saturn | Capricorn 0.18 | 9 | Own sign; combust |
| Sun | Capricorn 10.64 | 9 | Enemy sign |
| Moon | Capricorn 15.32 | 9 | Enemy sign; combust |
| Mercury | Capricorn 20.47 | 9 | Enemy sign; combust |
| Venus | Aquarius 19.80 | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Rahu / Ketu | Gemini 12.82 / Sagittarius 12.82 | 2 / 8 | Not counted |
- Inside the block: Mars in the 7th, Jupiter in the 8th, Saturn, the Sun, the Moon and Mercury in the 9th, Venus in the 10th. All seven are in houses 7 to 10. Holds.
- Every house occupied: one, one, four and one. Holds.
- Rahu in the 2nd is outside the block and Ketu in the 8th inside it; neither counts.
- Nothing else in the Akriti list fits: no graha is in houses 1 to 6 or 11 to 12, so the seven-house and alternate-house shapes are ruled out, and two kendras are not enough for the kendra-based ones.
The engine reports: "All 7 classical grahas (Sun through Saturn) sit in houses 7, 8, 9, 10 of your chart, and each of those houses holds at least one - a Nabhasa "Akriti" (shape) Yoga." The interpretation line is the long-life sentence quoted above. The Sun in the 9th house fits the clock: one in the afternoon.
Three details are worth a look. Four grahas share Capricorn, and the engine flags three of them combust, including the Moon, which is only a few degrees from the Sun on this date. None of that matters to Shakti, which ignores condition entirely. Mars is in its own sign in a kendra, so the same chart forms Ruchaka Yoga. And the engine's full report for the chart also lists Kedara, Dharma-Karmadhipati, the 5th and 9th lords' Raja Yoga, Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga, Sarala, Durudhura and Ubhayachari. A shape yoga with a bleak classical reading and several lordship yogas with bright ones can stand in the same chart; the texts give no arithmetic for netting them out.
Shakti and its siblings
The same sloka gives Yupa (houses 1 to 4, the hours before dawn), Shara (4 to 7, the evening) and Danda (10 to 1, the morning). The seven-house shape that also begins at the 7th is Chatra Yoga, which runs on through the 12th to the 1st and carries a much kinder reading. Shakti and Chatra cannot form together: Chatra needs houses 11, 12 and 1 occupied, which Shakti forbids.
What a yoga does not tell you
Shakti Yoga tells you that the seven grahas are clustered in the four houses between the descendant and the midheaven. That is a fact about the sky at a moment. The classical texts read a temperament and a life into it, and on the most serious point they contradict each other. This app reports the reading in softened form and draws no conclusion about health, life span or fortune from it. A yoga is a named rule about positions, not a forecast.
To check your own chart against Shakti and the other Nabhasa shapes, run the yoga calculator; it shows the houses each graha occupies, so you can verify the shape.
Questions about Shakti Yoga
- What is the rule for Shakti Yoga?
- All seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn in the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th houses from the ascendant, with each of those four houses holding at least one. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 13 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 12 state it.
- Does Shakti Yoga mean a long life or a short one?
- The texts disagree: BPHS Sl. 34 says "long lived", Saravali Sl. 39 says "short-lived". This app's sentence follows BPHS, but it does not draw any conclusion about life span from a yoga.
- How rare is Shakti Yoga?
- Very rare: 3 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. The full 20,000-moment walk met it 47 times, always in the afternoon, because the Sun has to be in the 7th to 10th house.
- Do combust or debilitated planets cancel it?
- No. The rule looks only at which houses the seven grahas occupy. In the worked example three grahas are combust and the yoga still forms.
- Why do I see Kedara Yoga with Shakti Yoga?
- Four houses are four signs, so every Shakti chart has exactly four signs occupied, which is Kedara. BPHS Sl. 16-17 says a Sankhya yoga like Kedara is not operable when another Nabhasa yoga forms; the engine reports both.
- Can Shakti Yoga form together with Danda, Shara or Chatra Yoga?
- No. Each of those shapes needs a different set of houses occupied, and Shakti requires every graha to be inside houses 7 to 10. Danda needs the 11th, 12th and 1st filled, Shara the 4th to 6th, and Chatra the 11th, 12th and 1st as well, so none of them can coexist with it.
- Another app shows Shakti Yoga for my chart but this one does not. Why?
- Most likely the other app reads the rule as "confined to" the four houses and allows one of them to be empty. In the sample that looser test passed 16 times against 3 for the strict one. A different ayanamsa or house system can also move a graha across a boundary.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
