Chatra Yoga forms when the seven grahas occupy the 7th through 12th houses and the 1st, one in each. The rule from BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 14, the classical reading the two texts share, why it never formed in the 1985-2060 sample, and the engine's first case, an afternoon in 2089.

In short

Chatra Yoga is the Nabhasa shape in which the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn fill the seven houses from the 7th round to the 1st, one graha in each. It never formed in 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, and the engine's walk first met it in 2089. BPHS and Saravali read it kindly, with happiness early and late in life.

Chatra means umbrella or parasol, and Chatra Yoga is the third of the four seven-house shapes among the Nabhasa yogas. Its block starts at the setting sign, the 7th house, climbs through the 10th at the top of the chart, and comes down to the rising sign, the 1st. All seven grahas must be inside and each of the seven houses must hold one. This page gives the rule as coded, the classical reading (the two texts largely agree, and the reading is a kind one), the rarity figures, and the one moment in the engine's 20,000-step walk where the shape appeared. As with any yoga, this is a named rule about positions; what a yoga in your chart means discusses what such rules can bear.

The rule: how Chatra Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 14: if all the grahas occupy the seven bhavas commencing from Yuvati, the 7th house, Chatra Yoga occurs, and the grahas "should occupy seven continuous Bhavas". Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 11 gives the same series - Nauka, Koota, Chatra and Chapa - from the ascendant and the other three angles. The engine checks:

  1. Seven grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
  2. Houses are whole signs from the Lagna.
  3. Every graha is in one of the houses 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 or 1 - from the 7th through the 12th to the 1st.
  4. Each of those seven houses is occupied, which with seven grahas means exactly one per house. The 2nd to 6th houses hold none of them.

The rule is silent on dignity, combustion, aspects and retrogression, and so is the engine. In its output the yoga belongs to no particular planet.

Why the image fits the sky

In whole-sign houses the 1st house is the sign rising on the eastern horizon and the 7th the sign setting in the west; the 8th to the 12th lie between them across the top of the sky. So the Chatra block is the visible half of the sky plus the two horizon signs. If every graha is up there, the Sun is too, which makes Chatra a daytime shape. Whether that is what the name meant to its authors the texts do not say; it is simply where the shape puts the planets.

What the engine decided

  • Every house filled. Sl. 14's "seven continuous Bhavas" supports the strict reading directly; the engine applies it to every Akriti shape.
  • Only the seven grahas count, following Saravali Ch. 21's "seven planets".
  • Every forming yoga is reported. One graha per house means seven occupied signs - Veena Yoga - which BPHS Sl. 16-17 would set aside when another Nabhasa yoga is present; the engine reports both.

What the classical texts say about Chatra

Chatra has one of the kinder readings in the chapter, and the two texts mostly agree on it. BPHS Sl. 38: the native will help his own people, be kind, dear to many kings, very intelligent, "happy at the beginning and end of his life", and long-lived. Saravali Sl. 23 (spelled Chhatra) gives help to his own men, kindness, liberality, the favour of a king, great intelligence, and happiness in boyhood and at the end. Saravali adds liberality; BPHS adds long life, which Saravali does not mention. Neither attaches any condition.

The app's sentence carries the BPHS version almost unchanged: "Classically read as a kind, intelligent and protective nature, long-lived, with the early and late parts of life classically the happiest." The long-life element comes from BPHS alone. This app does not make predictions about life span from any yoga; the phrase reports what the text attaches to the shape.

The life-phase readings of the shape yogas

Chatra belongs to a small group of Nabhasa yogas whose readings say which part of life is happiest. Laid side by side they form a pattern the texts do not comment on:

YogaShapeHappiest part of life (BPHS)Saravali
Chatraall seven in houses 7 to 1beginning and end (Sl. 38)boyhood and the end (Sl. 23)
Vajrabenefics in 1st and 7th, or malefics in 4th and 10thbeginning and end (Sl. 28)beginning and end (Sl. 26)
Yavathe reverse of Vajramid-life (Sl. 29)middle of life (Sl. 27)
Chapaall seven in houses 10 to 4middle of life (Sl. 39)no wealth in the middle of life (Sl. 24)
Paraphrased from bphs.txt Ch. 35 and saravali.txt Ch. 21. Only Chapa's two readings point in different directions.

For the class as a whole, Saravali Sl. 8-10 reads any Akriti yoga as contentment with one's own fortune and earning through a king, and both texts say Nabhasa results run through all periods rather than any one dasha (BPHS Sl. 50, Saravali Sl. 20-21). The corpus's other texts - Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras - do not mention Chatra Yoga.

How rare it is

In the engine's sample of 3,000 birth moments 1985-2060, Chatra Yoga never formed. The full walk of 20,000 moments (1985 to 2483) met it exactly once, on 15 August 2089. That makes it the rarest of the four angle-based seven-house shapes in the walk; Nauka and Chapa appeared twice each and Koota three times.

The reasons are those of every seven-house shape. The seven grahas often lie inside some run of seven consecutive houses - in 1,340 of the 3,000 sampled moments, on the engine's positions - but they very rarely spread so that every house of the run holds one: 4 times in 3,000, 29 times in 20,000. Mercury stays within about one sign of the Sun and Venus within about two, so those three must sit in three separate signs side by side, and the four remaining grahas must fill the other four signs exactly. On top of that, the Sun must be in the upper half of the chart, so only daytime moments qualify.

There is also a time window. A scratch run of the engine on 15 August 2089 shows the shape switching as the rising sign changes, with the planets all but still: at 12:40 IST the ascendant is in Libra and the engine reports Ardha Chandra Yoga; at 13:00 the ascendant has just entered Scorpio and it reports Chatra; Chatra holds through 15:15, with the ascendant at Scorpio 29.76; at 15:20 Sagittarius is rising and the report is Ardha Chandra again. The same arrangement of planets is Chatra only while one particular sign is rising - here a little over two hours.

Worked example: the engine's Chatra chart, 15 August 2089

Since the yoga never formed in the 1985-2060 sample, the example is the walk's only Chatra moment: 15 August 2089 at 14:55 IST, New Delhi. It is the engine's computation for that moment, offered to show the shape, not a forecast for anyone born then. You can enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Scorpio at 25.29 degrees.

engine-facts.mjs chatra-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Scorpio ascendant.
  1. All seven inside houses 7 to 1: Saturn, Venus, the Sun, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and the Moon, in order. Holds.
  2. Every house occupied, one each. Holds.
  3. Houses 2 to 6 hold none of the seven; Ketu is in the 5th, but the nodes are not counted. Rahu shares the 11th with Mars, which does not matter either.
  4. Venus one sign behind the Sun and Mercury one sign ahead: the inner trio is spread across three signs, as the shape requires.

The engine reports: "All 7 classical grahas (Sun through Saturn) sit in houses 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 1 of your chart, and each of those houses holds at least one - a Nabhasa "Akriti" (shape) Yoga." The interpretation line is the BPHS-based sentence quoted above. The Sun in the 9th house matches the hour, mid-afternoon.

The engine's full report for this moment lists nine yogas: Anapha, Ubhayachari, Chandradhi (Adhi), Veena, Chatra, Amala, Argala Raj, Vimala and Kendra-Kona Raj. The Moon is debilitated in Scorpio in the 1st and Jupiter sits in an enemy sign in the 12th; neither fact touches the shape.

Chatra beside its siblings

The four angle-based seven-house blocks are Nauka (1st to 7th), Koota (4th to 10th), Chatra (7th to 1st) and Chapa (10th to 4th); Ardha Chandra covers the eight non-angular starts. Chatra is the mirror of Nauka: the same seven-house span, but on the other side of the horizon. The four-house shape that also begins at the 7th is Shakti, which cannot form together with Chatra. Chatra holds three kendras - the 7th, 10th and 1st - so it could coincide with Maala Yoga if all three held benefics; in the 2089 chart they hold Saturn, Mercury and the Moon, a mix, so it does not.

What a yoga does not tell you

Chatra Yoga tells you that at a given moment the seven grahas stood one to a sign across the daytime sky. The texts read a kind and protective nature into that, with happiness early and late in life. That is a classical reading attached to a shape that the engine met once in nearly five centuries of sampled moments; it is not evidence about anyone's character or life, and the texts tie it to no period. A yoga is a named rule about positions.

To check a chart for Chatra and the other Nabhasa shapes, use the yoga calculator. It lists the house of each graha, so you can see how close any chart comes to the one-per-house spread.

Questions about Chatra Yoga

What is the rule for Chatra Yoga?
All seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 1st houses, with each of those seven houses occupied - one graha in each. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 14.
How rare is Chatra Yoga?
It did not form in any of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. The engine's 20,000-moment walk from 1985 to 2483 met it once, on 15 August 2089.
Is Chatra Yoga a good yoga?
BPHS Sl. 38 and Saravali Sl. 23 read it favourably: kind, intelligent, helpful to one's own people, happiest early and late in life. This app reports that reading and treats it, like every yoga, as a rule about positions rather than a promise.
Why does Chatra Yoga need a daytime birth?
Its houses, the 7th through the 12th and the 1st, are the upper half of the sky plus the two horizon signs. All seven grahas must be there, including the Sun, so the Sun is above or at the horizon.
What happens to Chatra Yoga if the birth time is a little different?
If the ascendant moves into the next or previous sign, every house number shifts and the block no longer starts at the 7th. In the 2089 example the engine reports Ardha Chandra Yoga instead at 12:40 and at 15:20, and Chatra only while Scorpio is rising.
How is Chatra Yoga different from Nauka Yoga?
Both need one graha in each of seven consecutive houses. Nauka's block runs from the 1st to the 7th, the half of the chart below the horizon, so it forms at night; Chatra's runs from the 7th to the 1st, the half above, so it forms by day. The texts read them differently too: water and wealth for Nauka, kindness and an easy start and end of life for Chatra.
Does Chatra Yoga always come with Veena Yoga?
Yes. One graha per house in seven houses means seven signs, which is Veena. BPHS Sl. 16-17 says Veena is not operable when another Nabhasa yoga is present; the engine reports both.
