Adhi Yoga, in its Moon-based form, needs Mercury, Venus or Jupiter in the 6th, 7th or 8th sign from the Moon, free of malefic conjunction and aspect. The rule from BPHS Ch. 37 and Saravali Ch. 35, how the engine grades it by count, how often it fires, and a chart where Saturn removes Jupiter.

In short

Adhi Yoga, as this app computes it, is the Moon-based Chandradhi Yoga: one or more of Mercury, Venus and Jupiter in the 6th, 7th or 8th sign from the Moon, none of them joined or aspected by a malefic, following BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 5 and Saravali Ch. 35 Sl. 20-21. The engine grades it by how many benefics qualify; it fired in 519 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.

Adhi Yoga is a Moon-based rule about the three signs facing the Moon - the 6th, 7th and 8th from it, the arc opposite. If the natural benefics stand there, free of malefic contact, the yoga forms. Two versions exist in the texts, one counted from the Moon (Chandradhi) and one from the ascendant (Lagnadhi); this app computes only the first. This page sets out the rule exactly as the engine tests it, including the choices it makes where the texts are loose, what BPHS and Saravali say, and a worked chart in which one aspect decides how strong the yoga is. For the general question of what any yoga means, read what a yoga in your chart means first.

The rule: how Adhi Yoga forms in this app

Counting is by whole signs from the Moon's sign as the 1st (the Chandra Lagna). The engine looks at three planets - Mercury, Venus and Jupiter - and counts each one that meets both conditions:

  1. It occupies the 6th, 7th or 8th sign from the Moon.
  2. It is unafflicted: no malefic - Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu - sits in the same house, and none casts an aspect on that house. Aspects are the engine's ordinary set: every planet aspects the 7th from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th; Saturn also the 3rd and 10th (the special aspects). Rahu and Ketu are given the 7th aspect only.

If at least one benefic qualifies, the engine reports "Chandradhi Yoga (Adhi Yoga)" and grades it by the count: one qualifying benefic is a modest version, two a strong one, all three an exceptionally strong one. The Moon itself is never one of the qualifying benefics - the rule is about planets seen from the Moon.

Three readings the engine had to choose

  • How many benefics. Saravali says "all benefics being in the 6th, 7th and 8th"; BPHS says "benefics occupy the 8th, 6th and 7th" and grades the result "according to the strength of the participating Grahas". Read strictly, all three benefics would have to be there. The engine instead reports the yoga with one or more and grades by count, which is closer to BPHS's gradation and is stated openly in the code.
  • What "unafflicted" means. Saravali asks that the three houses "not receive any aspect from malefics". The engine first tested aspect only; a hand-check of a real chart, recorded in the code, found a benefic sitting in the same house as a malefic passing as unafflicted, and conjunction was added. So the engine is stricter than the bare wording.
  • The Sun. Saravali says the houses "should exclude the Sun". The engine handles this through its malefic list: a Sun in the same house as a benefic, or aspecting it, removes that benefic. But a Sun in a different one of the three signs, not aspecting the benefic, does not cancel the yoga in the engine, where Saravali's wording would. That is a real difference and is noted here so you can apply the stricter reading.

What the classical texts say

BPHS gives the Moon version in Ch. 37 "Candr's Yogas", Sl. 5: benefics in the 8th, 6th and 7th from the Moon form Adhi Yoga, and "according to the strength of the participating Grahas" the person becomes a king, a minister or an army chief. That three-level result is the nearest classical warrant for grading the yoga. Saravali first mentions Adhi Yoga at the end of its lunar chapter (Ch. 13 Sl. 33), saying it is a Raja Yoga dealt with later, and then gives it in Ch. 35 "Raja Yogas", Sl. 20-21, under the name Chandradhi. Its result is a passage of royal imagery - a kingdom bounded by seas, elephants and bees - followed by freedom from ageing and sickness, freedom from fear of enemies, valour, fortune and happiness.

The engine comment explains why this one rule was taken from Saravali's Raja Yoga chapter when most of it was not: the chapter is otherwise made of dozens of one-off royal configurations, each naming exact signs for several planets, and Chandradhi is the one general rule among them. The engine's line keeps the durable-fortune reading and drops the imagery: "Classically one of the clearest markers of durable good fortune", graded modest, strong or exceptionally strong.

The ascendant version, which this app does not compute

Both texts also give an Adhi Yoga counted from the ascendant. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 13 calls it Lagnadhi: benefics exclusively in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the ascendant, without malefic company, giving ministership, command, long life and happiness, "so say Yavana kings". BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37 has a "Lagn Adhi Yog" with benefics in the 7th and 8th from the ascendant, free of malefic contact. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary on Mercury in the 7th house describes Lagnadhi too. The engine does not test any of these. If another app shows "Adhi Yoga" for your chart and this one does not, check whether it is counting from the ascendant.

Advanced Predictive Astrology names Adhi Yoga in passing (Vol. II, p. 209) in a list of combinations the author has seen in eminent people's charts, without a rule or a count. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 145) lists "Chandraadhi Yogas" as one of its five categories of yoga, but the pages of its yoga chapter read for this page (pp. 145-154, from page images) state no separate Adhi rule.

How rare it is

In the engine's sample the yoga fired in 519 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 17.3 percent - roughly one chart in six. That is the count for "one or more qualifying benefics"; the strict all-three reading would be far rarer. The grade the engine assigned in those 519 moments:

Qualifying beneficsEngine gradeMoments (of 519)
1modest437
2strong74
3exceptionally strong8
Same 3,000-moment walk as engine-facts.mjs, tallied from detectAdhiYoga output via detectYogas, run 2026-10-13.

Most Adhi Yogas, then, rest on a single benefic. The full version that Saravali's "all benefics" describes - Mercury, Venus and Jupiter all in the three signs and all clear of malefics - appeared in 8 of the 3,000 moments. Counting which benefics qualified across all 519 moments, Jupiter did so 235 times, Venus 224 and Mercury 150. Mercury and Venus, which stay near the Sun, are often in the 6th to 8th from the Moon together, around full Moon, when the Moon is opposite the Sun. Jupiter's position is independent of both, which is part of why the three-benefic version is so uncommon.

engine-facts.mjs adhi-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Virgo ascendant.
  1. The Moon is in Leo, so the 6th, 7th and 8th from it are Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces - houses 5, 6 and 7 from the ascendant.
  2. Candidates: Jupiter in Capricorn (6th from the Moon), Mercury and Venus in Pisces (8th). All three benefics are in the arc.
  3. Jupiter, house 5: no malefic shares house 5, but Saturn in house 3 casts its special 3rd aspect onto house 5. Jupiter is afflicted and drops out.
  4. Mercury and Venus, house 7: no malefic is in house 7. The aspects of the malefics fall on houses 2 (Sun, Rahu), 3, 12 and 4 (Mars), 9, 5 and 12 (Saturn) and 8 (Ketu) - none on house 7. Both qualify.
  5. Two qualifying benefics: the engine grades the yoga "strong".

The engine's output agrees: Chandradhi Yoga (Adhi Yoga) with the planets Venus, Mercury and the Moon, the sentence "Venus, Mercury sit unafflicted in the 6th, 7th or 8th sign from your Moon", and the "strong" grade. This chart shows the affliction test doing real work. All three benefics are in the right signs - the configuration Saravali's strict reading wants - but Saturn's aspect on Jupiter turns a would-be exceptional yoga into a strong one.

It also shows what the rule does not test. Mercury is debilitated in Pisces and Venus exalted in the same sign; the engine counts them equally, though BPHS's "according to the strength of the participating Grahas" would weigh them very differently. Jupiter, had it qualified, is debilitated too. And the Sun is in Aries, the 9th from the Moon, outside the three signs, so Saravali's "exclude the Sun" is satisfied here on any reading. The engine also returns Malavya Yoga for this chart, from the exalted Venus in a kendra.

Adhi Yoga beside its neighbouring yogas

Several Moon-based rules overlap with Adhi. Gaj Kesari asks for Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, and the 7th from the Moon is both a kendra and inside the Adhi arc, so a Jupiter there can serve both. Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura look at the signs next to the Moon instead of opposite it. Amala Yoga uses the same unafflicted-benefic test, but on the 10th from the ascendant or the Moon, and Mudrika looks at the Moon, Venus and Jupiter in mutual kendras. Adhi is also one of the few yogas Saravali files under Raja Yogas; for the wider family see the Raja Yoga glossary entry.

What the rule does and does not establish

Adhi Yoga, as computed here, establishes that at least one natural benefic stands in the three signs opposite the Moon with no malefic touching it. The texts read that as rank and lasting fortune, graded by strength; they give no timing rule. The engine grades by count, not by the planets' dignity, and it does not compute the ascendant version. A yoga is a named rule about positions, not a promise. A chart without it is not missing anything the texts guarantee elsewhere.

Questions about Adhi Yoga

Is Adhi Yoga the same as Chandradhi Yoga?
In this app, yes: the engine computes the Moon-based version, which Saravali calls Chandradhi and BPHS calls Adhi Yog from Candr. The ascendant-based Lagnadhi Yoga is a different rule that the app does not compute.
Do all three benefics have to be in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon?
Saravali's wording suggests so. The engine reports the yoga with one or more and grades it: one is modest, two strong, three exceptionally strong. In the sample, 8 of the 519 Adhi moments had all three.
Does the Moon count as one of the benefics?
No. The rule looks at Mercury, Venus and Jupiter as seen from the Moon.
What cancels a benefic from Adhi Yoga?
A malefic - Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu - in the same house or aspecting that house, including the special aspects of Mars and Saturn.
How common is Adhi Yoga?
It fired in 519 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 17.3 percent. Most of those (437) rested on a single benefic.
Does the dignity of the benefics matter?
Not to the engine, which grades only by count. BPHS says the result follows the strength of the participating planets, so a reader may weigh an exalted Venus above a debilitated Mercury.
Is Adhi Yoga a Raja Yoga?
Saravali files it under Raja Yogas (Ch. 35) and says so in Ch. 13 Sl. 33; BPHS places it among the Moon's yogas (Ch. 37) but gives it a royal result. This app reports it under its own name, Chandradhi Yoga (Adhi Yoga), as a separate rule.
Which benefic most often forms Adhi Yoga?
In the engine's sample, Jupiter qualified in 235 of the 519 Adhi moments, Venus in 224 and Mercury in 150. A moment with two or three qualifying benefics counts under each.
Should I do anything about Adhi Yoga?
No. It is a named rule about positions. This app does not prescribe remedies.
