Malavya Yoga is the Panchamahapurusha yoga of Venus: Venus in its own sign or exaltation and in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant. The BPHS and Saravali rule, the Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara caveat, why every ascendant can have it, its frequency and a 1985 chart.

In short

Malavya Yoga forms when Venus is in Taurus or Libra (its own signs) or Pisces (its exaltation) and also in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant. It is the Venus member of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas, and the only one every ascendant can have. It fired in 275 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.2 percent).

Malavya Yoga is the Venus member of the Panchamahapurusha yogas: Venus in a sign it owns or is exalted in, and in an angle of the chart. Saravali names it first of the five; BPHS puts it fourth, after Ruchaka, Bhadra and Hamsa, and before Sasa. Its distinguishing feature is reach. Each of its three qualifying signs belongs to a different modality, so unlike Hamsa, Ruchaka or Sasa, no rising sign is barred from it. This page states the rule as this app tests it, sets out the stricter reading one text adds, and checks a real chart by hand. The broader question of what a yoga means is covered in what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: two conditions on Venus

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 gives the template for all five: the planet "in their own, or exaltation Rasi, be in Kendra to Lagn". The engine applies it to Venus as two tests and reports Malavya Yoga only when both pass.

  1. Dignity. The engine grades Venus Exalted, Moolatrikona or Own sign. Venus is exalted in Pisces (graded Exalted at every degree), owns Taurus (Own sign throughout) and owns Libra, where the first 15 degrees are graded moolatrikona and the rest own sign.
  2. Kendra. Venus's house, counted in whole signs from the ascendant, is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th - a kendra.

When both hold, the engine's sentence reads, for example, "Venus is exalted in Pisces, in your 7th house (a kendra) - a Panchamahapurusha Yoga". Nothing else about Venus is consulted: not its distance from the Sun, not its motion, not its company.

Choices the engine makes

  • Moolatrikona is admitted as a third grade, though the texts name only own and exaltation signs. For Venus this has a small twist. The texts disagree about how much of Libra is moolatrikona - the engine follows BPHS's first 15 degrees, and its source comment notes that Saravali gives 5 and the Bhrigu Sutras 20. For Malavya the dispute is harmless: every degree of Libra qualifies, whichever label it carries.
  • Exaltation is a whole sign. Venus anywhere in Pisces is graded Exalted. BPHS's wording is the exaltation Rasi, a sign rather than a point.
  • The kendra is counted from the ascendant alone, as BPHS ("Kendra to Lagn") and Saravali ("identical with Angles") both put it. A Venus angular only from the Moon does not count.
  • Combustion and retrograde motion are not tested. Venus is never far from the Sun, so combustion is a live question for this planet; the engine leaves it to the reader, as the two older texts do.

Every ascendant has exactly one route

Counting kendras from each qualifying sign gives this table:

Venus inModalityFalls in a kendra for these ascendants
Taurus (own)fixedTaurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
Libra (moolatrikona / own)movableLibra, Capricorn, Aries, Cancer
Pisces (exalted)dualPisces, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius
Derived from the rule: a kendra is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign counted from the ascendant.

Because Taurus is fixed, Libra movable and Pisces dual, the three signs serve three disjoint sets of four ascendants, and together they cover all twelve - once each. Compare Hamsa, where fixed ascendants are shut out, or Ruchaka and Sasa, where dual ascendants are. For any given chart, then, there is exactly one sign Venus has to be in for Malavya: for a Leo ascendant it must be Taurus in the 10th; for a Virgo ascendant, Pisces in the 7th. All twelve ascendants duly appear among the 275 Malavya moments in the sample.

What the classical texts say about Malavya Yoga

  • BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 17-19 describes the Malavya native as having beautiful lips and a slender waist, "lustrous, like Candr", with a fragrant body, clean teeth, a voice like an elephant's and long arms. It closes with the face's length and breadth in Anguls, rule over Sindhu and Malwa, and a lifespan.
  • Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 3-4 gives a parallel portrait - thin lips, an even physique, "splendour equal to that of the moon", a majestic voice, a pleasant bodily odour, piercing sight and even white teeth - with its own face measurements, regions and lifespan.
  • Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, p. 147 (page image), names Vrishabha and Thula as Venus's own houses and Meena as its exaltation, requires a kendra from the lagna, and adds that Venus should be "without suffering from malefic influences". Its reading is medium stature, a lustrous body, a good family and fortune, learning, renown, good vehicles and enjoyment of life's pleasures.
  • The same book, p. 145, holds that a yoga's influence peaks in the dasa or antardasa of the planets forming it.
  • Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 147, places the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas under limits set by the Sun-Moon configuration, as the author's own view. It gives no Venus-specific rule.

Where the texts and the engine part

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's clause for Malavya is narrower than the one it gives Ruchaka or Hamsa: it speaks of Venus not suffering from malefic influences, without naming the ascendant and Moon. BPHS and Saravali have no such clause, and the engine follows them, so a Venus sitting with Mars or Saturn still forms Malavya here. The engine's sentence for the yoga is: "Classically read as charming and refined, drawn to beauty and harmony, easy warmth with others." It keeps the texts' emphasis on grace and pleasure and drops the measurements, territory and lifespan.

How rare it is

Malavya fired in 275 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 - 9.2 percent, or about one chart in eleven. Venus was in Taurus, Libra or Pisces in 885 of the 3,000 moments, in any house, so roughly three in ten of those dignified placements also fell in a kendra. Among the five Panchamahapurusha yogas only Sasa (281) fired more often in the sample.

The house row is the uneven one. Hamsa's 246 moments were spread almost evenly across the four kendras; Malavya's lean towards the 10th (98) and away from the 1st (42). The sample is a fixed walk of times in New Delhi, and this page does not claim a cause for the skew - it is reported as the engine counted it. The combust row matters for the stricter reading: those 33 are the clearest candidates for Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's objection, though the text's clause is about malefic influence generally, not combustion by name.

Worked example: 24 February 1985, New Delhi

The first moment in the engine's walk with Malavya Yoga is 24 February 1985 at 21:42 IST in New Delhi. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator to follow along. The ascendant is Virgo at 28.04 degrees, so Libra is the 2nd house, Pisces the 7th and Leo the 12th.

  1. Dignity. Venus is in Pisces at 23.45 degrees. Pisces is its exaltation sign and the engine grades the whole sign Exalted. It qualifies.
  2. Kendra. Counting from Virgo, Pisces is the 7th sign, so Venus is in the 7th house, a kendra. It qualifies.

The engine reports Malavya Yoga: "Venus is exalted in Pisces, in your 7th house (a kendra) - a Panchamahapurusha Yoga." Venus is neither combust nor retrograde at this moment.

Apply Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's clause by hand and the picture changes. Mars sits in Pisces with Venus, less than a degree away. Mars is a natural malefic, so a reader who follows p. 147's "without suffering from malefic influences" would not accept this Malavya as clean. The engine, following BPHS and Saravali, reports it regardless.

The rest of the family is absent. Jupiter is in the 5th and debilitated, so no Hamsa; Saturn is in an enemy sign in the 3rd, so no Sasa; Mars is angular in the 7th but Pisces gives it no dignity, so no Ruchaka; Mercury, the ascendant lord, is in the 6th, so no Bhadra. The engine also finds Anapha, Ubhayachari, Pasa, Argala Raj Yoga and Vimala Yoga here. The last is worth a note: Leo is the 12th sign from Virgo, its lord the Sun sits in the 6th, and a 12th lord in a trika house is exactly what Vimala tests. A dignified, angular Venus and a Vipareeta-type placement in one chart are independent rules that happen to coincide.

Checking a chart for Malavya by hand

Because each ascendant has one route, the check takes three steps and needs only the rising sign and Venus's sign.

  1. Find the modality of the rising sign. Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are movable; Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are fixed; Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are dual.
  2. Read off the one sign Venus must occupy: Libra for a movable ascendant, Taurus for a fixed one, Pisces for a dual one.
  3. Confirm the house. If Venus is in that sign, it is automatically in a kendra, because the qualifying sign is by construction 1, 4, 7 or 10 signs from the ascendant. If Venus is in either of its other two dignified signs, it is in a non-angular house and the yoga does not form.

Step three has a useful consequence: for a given ascendant, a dignified Venus is either angular or it is not - there is no case where Venus is in its "right" sign and in the wrong house. Venus in Taurus for a Virgo ascendant, for instance, is in the 9th house: dignified, in a trikona, and still not Malavya. Venus in Libra for the same ascendant is in the 2nd, again outside the angles. Of the 885 sampled moments with Venus dignified, 275 put it in the one sign that counts for that chart's ascendant.

Malavya beside the other four

The five yogas share one template and differ in planet and signs. Malavya and Hamsa are the two formed by natural benefics; Malavya has the wider reach, Hamsa the narrower. In the sample Malavya (275) sat between Sasa (281) and Hamsa (246), with Ruchaka (219) and Bhadra (165) below. Malavya should also not be confused with Amala Yoga, which a Venus in the 10th from the ascendant or Moon can also produce, but which asks only for a benefic there - not for Venus, and not for dignity.

What Malavya Yoga does not tell you

The yoga establishes that Venus is dignified by sign and angular by house. It does not weigh Venus's company, its closeness to the Sun, or the houses it rules for your ascendant, and it does not predict a marriage, a fortune or a career. This app links the yoga to the Venus Mahadasha, in line with Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's remark about yogas acting most in the periods of their planets; treat that as a timing convention. The portraits in the texts are their claims, summarised here.

To test your own Venus against both conditions, run the yoga calculator. It reports the dignity and house it used, so you can also check for malefic company yourself.

Questions about Malavya Yoga

What is Malavya Yoga?
It is the Panchamahapurusha yoga of Venus: Venus in Taurus or Libra (own signs) or Pisces (exaltation) and in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant, per BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2.
Can every ascendant have Malavya Yoga?
Yes, and each has exactly one route. Fixed ascendants need Venus in Taurus, movable ascendants Venus in Libra, dual ascendants Venus in Pisces - each in a kendra.
Does combust Venus form Malavya Yoga?
In this app, yes. The engine does not test combustion, and BPHS and Saravali state no such condition. In the sample 33 of the 275 Malavya moments had Venus combust.
Does Mars or Saturn with Venus cancel Malavya Yoga?
Not in the engine or in BPHS and Saravali. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 147) asks that Venus be "without suffering from malefic influences", so a reader following it would discount such a chart, as with the 1985 worked example.
Does the Libra moolatrikona dispute affect Malavya?
No. Whether Libra's moolatrikona band is 5, 15 or 20 degrees, every degree of Libra is either moolatrikona or own sign for Venus, and both qualify.
How common is Malavya Yoga?
It fired in 275 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 9.2 percent.
Is Venus in Taurus in the 1st house Malavya Yoga?
Yes, for a Taurus ascendant: Taurus is Venus's own sign and the 1st house is a kendra.

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
