In short
Bhadra Yoga is formed when Mercury is in Gemini or Virgo - its own signs, Virgo also its exaltation - and in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the ascendant. It is the Mercury member of the Panchamahapurusha yogas in BPHS Ch. 75 and the least frequent of the five: 165 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (5.5 percent).
Bhadra Yoga is the Mercury member of the Panchamahapurusha yogas, the five yogas BPHS gives to the non-luminary grahas when one of them is dignified and angular. The other four are Ruchaka (Mars), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Sasa (Saturn). Mercury's version has two peculiarities the others lack: it can only form for one group of ascendants, and the Mercury that forms it is very often combust. Both follow directly from the rule. For what any yoga is worth, see what a yoga in your chart means.
The rule: how Bhadra Yoga forms
BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 states the family rule - the planet "in their own, or exaltation Rasi, be in Kendra to Lagn" - and the engine applies it to Mercury in two checks.
- Dignity. The engine grades Mercury Exalted, Moolatrikona or Own sign. That means Mercury is in Gemini (own sign) or anywhere in Virgo, which BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 splits three ways: 0-15 degrees exaltation, 15-20 moolatrikona, 20-30 own sign. All three grades qualify.
- Kendra. Mercury's whole-sign house from the ascendant is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th - a kendra.
If both hold, the engine reports the yoga against Mercury with a sentence naming the grade, the sign and the house, and attaches its paraphrase of the classical reading.
Only dual-sign ascendants can have Bhadra
Gemini and Virgo are both dual signs, a square apart. Counting kendras in whole signs, Gemini and Virgo are kendras only for the four dual ascendants - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. For each of those four, both Gemini and Virgo fall in kendras, so any dignified Mercury forms the yoga. For the eight movable and fixed ascendants, Bhadra Yoga is impossible. It is the mirror image of Ruchaka, which no dual ascendant can have.
Readings the engine settles
- Moolatrikona is listed alongside own and exaltation signs, though BPHS names only those two. For Mercury it is a slice of Virgo, so the listing changes nothing: every degree of Virgo already qualifies.
- The kendra is from the ascendant only, as BPHS ("in Kendra to Lagn") and Saravali ("identical with Angles") both state.
- Combustion, retrograde motion and malefic contact are not tested. BPHS and Saravali set no such condition; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara does, as the next section shows.
- Only a temperament line is reproduced. The texts' body descriptions, palm marks, weights, the region ruled and the lifespan - on which BPHS and Saravali do not even agree - are deliberately left out by the engine.
The Virgo split has a small history in the code. The engine's dignity table records that, before the 15-degree bound was added, every degree of Virgo was labelled Exalted and the moolatrikona band could never be reached. For Bhadra Yoga that change made no difference - all of Virgo qualified before and after - but it does change the grade the engine prints beside Mercury, and so the wording of the yoga's sentence. A Mercury at Virgo 18 is now reported "in moolatrikona", not "exalted".
What the classical texts say about Bhadra Yoga
- BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 8-12: the Bhadra native is splendorous like a lion, broad-chested, with an elephant's gait and long arms; learned, versed in Yoga and the Shastras, Sattva-guni, fond of comforts, of independent nature, a protector of his family, and one whose friends share in his wealth.
- Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 14-18 gives a closely related portrait - a tiger-like face, the elephant's gait, learning, knowledge of Yoga and Shastras, independence in all undertakings, friends allowed to enjoy his wealth - but where BPHS has "protector of his family", Saravali says he "will not forgive (even) his own men".
- Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, p. 146, gives the rule with a proviso: "provided Budha, lagna and Chandra are without blemish". Its reading: well-built with long arms, intelligent and learned, satwik, pure in body and mind, eloquent, wealthy and long-lived.
- The Bhrigu Sutras commentary (p. 63) notes Bhadra for Mercury in own sign or exaltation in the 1st and quotes its effects (strong, lion-like face, taciturn, helpful to relatives); p. 65 says the same of the 4th.
- Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 147, holds that Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are limited by the chart's Sun-Moon configuration.
The engine's sentence
"Classically read as sharp-minded and articulate, well-read, independent-natured and protective of family." It takes BPHS's "protector of his family" over Saravali's unforgiving version, keeps the learning and independence all the texts share, and adds the articulacy Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara calls eloquence. It is a paraphrase, not a prediction.
How often Bhadra fires, and how often its Mercury is combust
Bhadra fired in 165 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 - 5.5 percent, the lowest of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas (Ruchaka 219, Hamsa 246, Malavya 275, Sasa 281). Two factors keep it down. Mercury has only two qualifying signs where the others have three, and only four ascendants can host it at all. Mercury was in Gemini or Virgo in 493 of the 3,000 moments; in 165 of those it was also in a kendra (Virgo 89, Gemini 76).
| Bhadra moments (of 165) by | Count |
|---|---|
| Own sign / Exalted / Moolatrikona | 108 / 47 / 10 |
| 1st / 4th / 7th / 10th house | 47 / 38 / 37 / 43 |
| Mercury combust | 59 |
| Mercury retrograde | 33 |
| Gaj Kesari Yoga also present | 36 |
The combust row is the striking one: in 59 of 165 Bhadra charts - more than a third - Mercury was combust. That is far more than for any other member of the family (Ruchaka 33 of 219, Hamsa 18 of 246), and it follows from astronomy: Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so a dignified Mercury is often sitting close to it. BPHS and Saravali say nothing about it. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's proviso that Mercury be "without blemish" would set those 59 aside - so whether Bhadra is a 5.5 percent yoga or a much rarer one depends on which text you follow. See combustion for how the engine flags it.
Worked example: 1 October 1985, New Delhi
The first moment in the engine's walk with Bhadra Yoga is 1 October 1985 at 12:30 IST, New Delhi. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Sagittarius at 4.96 degrees - a dual sign, as Bhadra requires.
| Graha | Sign and degree | House | Engine notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Virgo 20.94 | 10 | Own sign; combust |
| Sun | Virgo 14.39 | 10 | Enemy sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 13.52 | 2 | Debilitated; retrograde |
| Moon | Aries 9.51 | 5 | Enemy sign |
| Venus | Leo 17.56 | 9 | Neutral |
| Mars | Leo 19.79 | 9 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Scorpio 1.22 | 12 | Neutral |
- Dignity. Mercury is in Virgo at 20.94 degrees. That is past the exaltation band (0-15) and the moolatrikona band (15-20), so the engine grades it Own sign - about one degree short of being graded moolatrikona. Any of the three would qualify.
- Kendra. Counting from Sagittarius, Virgo is the 10th sign, so Mercury is in the 10th house. It qualifies.
The engine reports Bhadra Yoga: Mercury in its own sign, Virgo, in the 10th house. It also links the yoga to Mercury's Mahadasha. Mercury and the Sun together in the 10th, as lords of the 10th and 9th, also give a Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga.
Apply the stricter test and the result changes. The Sun is in Virgo too, about six and a half degrees behind Mercury, and the engine flags Mercury combust. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara would not let this Bhadra stand. This chart is therefore a clean example of the single largest disagreement about the yoga: by BPHS and the engine it is present; by the stricter text it is not. Meanwhile Jupiter, debilitated in Capricorn, rules out Hamsa, and Venus and Mars in Leo in the 9th are neither dignified nor angular, so Bhadra is the only Panchamahapurusha yoga here.
Which other great-person yogas can join Bhadra
The dual-ascendant restriction has a further consequence: it decides which of the other four Panchamahapurusha yogas can ever appear in the same chart as Bhadra. Every Bhadra chart rises in Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces, so its kendras are always the four dual signs. A second yoga of the family needs its planet dignified in one of those same four signs.
- Hamsa can join it: Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces, both dual.
- Malavya can join it, but only through Venus exalted in Pisces; Venus's own signs, Taurus and Libra, are never kendras for a dual ascendant.
- Ruchaka never can: Mars is dignified only in Aries, Scorpio and Capricorn.
- Sasa never can: Saturn is dignified only in Capricorn, Aquarius and Libra.
So a chart with Bhadra can carry at most three of the five, and only with Jupiter and Venus. Separately, 36 of the 165 Bhadra moments in the sample also carried Gaj Kesari Yoga, an unrelated Jupiter rule that happened to fire alongside. And Mercury was retrograde in 33 of the 165; retrograde motion is not part of any text's condition for Bhadra, and the engine reports the yoga either way.
What Bhadra Yoga does not tell you
The yoga records that Mercury is dignified and angular. It does not say whether Mercury is combust or afflicted, and it does not weigh the rest of the chart. This app points to the Mercury Mahadasha as the yoga's period, in line with Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's remark (p. 145) that yogas are felt most in the periods of their planets; that is a convention, not a forecast. The texts' portrait of the Bhadra person is their claim.

Questions about Bhadra Yoga
- What is Bhadra Yoga?
- It is the Panchamahapurusha yoga of Mercury: Mercury in Gemini or Virgo and in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant, as BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 state.
- Which ascendants can have Bhadra Yoga?
- Only Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. For those four, Gemini and Virgo both fall in kendras; for every other ascendant they do not, so the yoga cannot form.
- Does a combust Mercury cancel Bhadra Yoga?
- Not by BPHS or Saravali, and not in this app. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 146) requires Mercury, the ascendant and the Moon to be without blemish. In the sample, Mercury was combust in 59 of the 165 Bhadra charts.
- Is Bhadra Yoga active all my life or only in Mercury's period?
- BPHS Ch. 75 gives no timing rule. This app links the yoga to the Mercury Mahadasha, following the common convention that Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 145) states - that a yoga is felt most in the periods of the planets that form it. That is a convention for where to look, not a forecast of events.
- Does it matter where in Virgo Mercury is?
- Not for the yoga. The engine grades Virgo 0-15 exalted, 15-20 moolatrikona and 20-30 own sign, and all three qualify.
- Can Bhadra Yoga occur together with Ruchaka or Sasa Yoga?
- No. Bhadra needs a dual-sign ascendant, whose kendras are the dual signs, and Mars and Saturn are never dignified in a dual sign. Bhadra can share a chart only with Hamsa, and with Malavya when Venus is exalted in Pisces.
- Does Bhadra Yoga count from the Moon?
- No. BPHS and Saravali both place the kendra from the ascendant, and the engine follows them. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara brings the Moon in only as something that must be free of blemish, not as a second anchor.
- How common is Bhadra Yoga?
- It fired in 165 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 5.5 percent - the least frequent of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas.
- What do the texts say Bhadra Yoga gives?
- Learning, intelligence, independence, a strong build and eloquence, with BPHS and Saravali differing on whether the person protects or refuses to forgive his own people. This app paraphrases it as sharp-minded, articulate, well-read, independent and protective of family, and treats the yoga as a named rule, not a promise.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
