Ruchaka Yoga is the Panchamahapurusha yoga of Mars: Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn and in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant. The BPHS Ch. 75 rule, the extra conditions later texts add, what the engine leaves out, how often it fires, and a 1985 chart.

In short

Ruchaka Yoga is formed when Mars stands in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or its exaltation sign (Capricorn) and in a kendra - the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house - from the ascendant. It is the Mars member of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas of BPHS Ch. 75. It fired in 219 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.3 percent).

Ruchaka Yoga is the yoga of a strong, angular Mars. It is one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas - the "five great persons" - each formed by one of the five non-luminary grahas standing in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra. Its siblings are Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Sasa (Saturn). This page gives Ruchaka's rule exactly as this app tests it, sets out where later texts add conditions the engine does not test, and walks through a real chart. What any yoga is worth is discussed in what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: two conditions on Mars

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 gives all five yogas in a single sentence: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, "being in their own, or exaltation Rasi, be in Kendra to Lagn". For Mars the engine checks two things, and reports Ruchaka Yoga when both hold.

  1. Dignity. The engine's dignity grade for Mars is Exalted, Moolatrikona or Own sign. In practice that means Mars is in Aries (graded moolatrikona from 0 to 12 degrees and own sign from 12 to 30), in Scorpio (own sign) or in Capricorn (its exaltation sign, at any degree).
  2. Kendra. Mars's house, counted in whole signs from the ascendant, is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th.

When both hold, the engine reports the yoga against Mars with a sentence such as "Mars is in its own sign, Aries, in your 1st house (a kendra) - a Panchamahapurusha Yoga", and attaches its paraphrase of the classical reading.

Choices the engine makes, and what it leaves out

  • Moolatrikona is listed as a third qualifying grade, though BPHS names only own and exaltation signs. It changes nothing: Mars's moolatrikona band (Aries 0-12) lies inside an own sign, so it is listed only because the dignity function gives those degrees their own label.
  • The kendra is counted from the ascendant only. BPHS says "in Kendra to Lagn" and Saravali "identical with Angles"; neither offers the Moon as an alternative anchor, so the engine does not either.
  • Combustion, retrograde motion, conjunctions and aspects are not tested. BPHS Ch. 75 and Saravali Ch. 37 state no such condition. A later text does (next section), and a reader who follows it will see the yoga in fewer charts.
  • The engine reproduces only a temperament line. BPHS and Saravali also give the Ruchaka person's face, height, weight, palm marks, the region he would rule and the age and manner of his death. The engine's source comment says plainly that none of that is reproduced, and this page follows it.

Which ascendants can have Ruchaka at all

Because the kendra is counted from the ascendant, the two conditions together fix which rising signs can ever carry the yoga. Counting kendras in whole signs:

Mars inIs in a kendra for these ascendants
Aries (own)Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
Capricorn (exalted)Capricorn, Aries, Libra, Cancer
Scorpio (own)Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus, Leo
Derived from the rule: a kendra is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign counted from the ascendant.

Aries and Capricorn are a square apart, so they serve the same four ascendants - the four movable signs, which therefore get two routes to Ruchaka. The four fixed ascendants get one route, through Scorpio. The four dual ascendants - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces - get none: their kendras are the dual signs, where Mars has no dignity. A chart rising in a dual sign cannot have Ruchaka Yoga, whatever Mars is doing.

What the classical texts say about Ruchaka Yoga

  • BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 3-7 describes the Ruchaka native as long-faced, very enthusiastic, powerful, fond of war, victorious over enemies and discriminating, but also of "cruel temperament"; the sloka then moves into body measurements and closes with a death after seventy.
  • Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 gives the same rule, listing the five in a different order (Malavya first). Sl. 5-7 describe Ruchaka in similar terms - strength, valour, a penchant for war, conqueror of enemies - and add knowledge of mantras. Where BPHS calls him a "protector of thieves", Saravali has "leader of thieves".
  • Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, p. 145, restates the rule and adds a condition: "For the Yoga to operate Kuja, Lagna and Chandra should be without blemish" - not joined with malefics, not combust, not hemmed in between malefics. Its reading is courageous, victorious in wars, powerful, arrogant, healthy and famous.
  • The Bhrigu Sutras commentary (p. 46) notes that Mars in its own sign or exalted in the ascendant forms Ruchaka, quoting B. V. Raman's Three Hundred Important Combinations for its effects (strong physique, fame, leadership of an army); on p. 50 it says the same of Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn in the 4th.
  • Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 147, gives the author's view that individual yogas "like Gaja Kesari, Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga etc." are limited by the Sun-Moon configuration of the chart.

Where the texts and the engine part

BPHS and Saravali give a bare two-condition rule, and the engine follows them. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara adds a third condition - Mars, the ascendant and the Moon free of blemish - which the engine does not test. That is a deliberate choice of the oldest statement, not an oversight, and it means a chart this app reports as Ruchaka may fail the stricter reading. The engine's own sentence for the yoga is: "Classically read as energetic and decisive, drawn to challenge, leads through courage and directness." It keeps the shared theme of courage and drops the texts' cruelty and arrogance.

How often Ruchaka Yoga fires

Ruchaka fired in 219 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 - 7.3 percent, roughly one chart in fourteen. Mars was in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn in 672 of the 3,000, so about a third of those dignified placements also fell in a kendra - as you would expect, since four of the twelve houses are kendras. The three signs contributed almost equally: Aries 75, Scorpio 73, Capricorn 71.

The combust row matters for the stricter reading: Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara would reject at least those 33 on combustion alone, before checking malefic contact or hemming. Across all five Panchamahapurusha yogas, 1,026 of the 3,000 sampled moments had at least one, 145 had two and a handful had three or four - so the family as a whole is common, even if each member is not.

Worked example: 2 April 1985, New Delhi

The first moment in the engine's walk with Ruchaka Yoga is 2 April 1985 at 08:10 IST, New Delhi. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator to follow along. The ascendant is Aries at 26.47 degrees.

  1. Dignity. Mars is in Aries at 19.26 degrees - past the moolatrikona band, which ends at 12 - so the engine grades it Own sign. It qualifies.
  2. Kendra. Aries is the rising sign, so Mars is in the 1st house, a kendra. It qualifies.

The engine reports Ruchaka Yoga: "Mars is in its own sign, Aries, in your 1st house (a kendra)". Its timing step would point to Mars's own Mahadasha as the period to watch.

Now apply Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's stricter test, which the engine does not. Mars is not combust - the Sun is in Pisces, a different sign. But Rahu shares Aries with Mars; whether that counts as association with a malefic is a judgement the text leaves to the reader, and someone who counts Rahu would not let this Ruchaka "operate". This is exactly the gap between the bare rule and the stricter one.

The other dignified planets show why the family is selective. Venus is exalted in Pisces, but in the 12th house, so no Malavya. Jupiter is in the 10th, a kendra, but debilitated in Capricorn, so no Hamsa. Mercury is debilitated, and Saturn is in an enemy sign in the 8th. The engine finds Ruchaka alone of the five here, alongside Pasa, Vesi and Harsha (Mercury, lord of Virgo, the 6th sign from Aries, sits in the 12th).

Ruchaka beside the other four

All five Panchamahapurusha yogas share one template - own or exaltation sign, kendra from the ascendant - and differ only in the planet. Mars has three qualifying signs, like Jupiter, Venus and Saturn; Mercury has only two, because its exaltation sign, Virgo, is also one of its own signs. In the sample Ruchaka (219) was a little less frequent than Hamsa (246), Malavya (275) and Sasa (281), and more frequent than Bhadra (165). Where Ruchaka and Gaj Kesari coincide - 39 times in the sample - they are unrelated rules that happen to fire together, one about Mars and one about Jupiter.

What Ruchaka Yoga does not tell you

The yoga confirms that Mars is well placed by sign and angular by house. It does not test whether Mars is afflicted, it does not weigh the rest of the chart, and it does not say what Mars will bring. This app links the yoga to the Mars Mahadasha, which matches Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's remark that a yoga's influence is felt most in the periods of the planets forming it; that is a timing convention, not a forecast. The texts' portrait of the Ruchaka person is their claim, reported briefly here.

To test your own Mars against both conditions, run the yoga calculator. It shows the dignity and the house it used, so you can also apply the stricter "without blemish" reading yourself.

Questions about Ruchaka Yoga

What is Ruchaka Yoga?
It is the Panchamahapurusha yoga of Mars: Mars in Aries or Scorpio (its own signs) or Capricorn (its exaltation) and in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant, as BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 states.
Does Ruchaka Yoga count from the Moon too?
Not in this app, and not in BPHS or Saravali, which both say the kendra is from the ascendant. A kendra from the Moon alone does not form it here.
Is Ruchaka Yoga cancelled if Mars is combust or retrograde?
Not by BPHS or Saravali, and the engine does not test either. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 145) says Mars, the ascendant and the Moon must be without blemish, including not combust. In the sample, 33 of the 219 Ruchaka charts had a combust Mars.
Can a Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces ascendant have Ruchaka Yoga?
No. The kendras from a dual-sign ascendant are the four dual signs, and Mars is neither in its own sign nor exalted in any of them. Movable-sign ascendants can have it through Aries or Capricorn; fixed-sign ascendants only through Scorpio.
Do I need Mars in Capricorn exactly at its deep exaltation degree?
No. The engine grades Mars Exalted anywhere in Capricorn, and BPHS speaks of the exaltation sign, not a degree. The degree matters only inside Aries, where 0-12 is graded moolatrikona and the rest own sign - both qualify.
How common is Ruchaka Yoga?
It fired in 219 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 7.3 percent.
Does Mars in Capricorn in the 10th form Ruchaka Yoga?
Yes. Capricorn is Mars's exaltation sign and the 10th is a kendra, so both conditions hold. Mars in Capricorn falls in the 10th house only for an Aries ascendant.
What does Ruchaka Yoga give, according to the texts?
BPHS, Saravali and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara agree on courage, strength and victory over enemies, with harsher notes as well. This app paraphrases it as an energetic, decisive temperament that leads through courage, and treats the yoga as a named rule about positions, not a promise.
