In short
Sasa Yoga forms when Saturn is in Capricorn or Aquarius (its own signs) or Libra (its exaltation) and also in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant. It is the Saturn member of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas. It fired in 281 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.4 percent), the most of the five.
Sasa Yoga is the one Panchamahapurusha yoga formed by a natural malefic other than Mars: Saturn, dignified by sign and standing in an angle of the chart. The name is usually rendered as "hare". It sits in the family of five Panchamahapurusha yogas with Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter) and Malavya (Venus). Saturn's slowness gives this yoga a character of its own: whether a chart has Sasa depends heavily on which years Saturn was passing through its three signs, and when it is present, Saturn is often retrograde. For the general question of how much weight any yoga carries, see what a yoga in your chart means.
The rule: how Sasa Yoga forms
BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 gives one template for the five: the planet "in their own, or exaltation Rasi, be in Kendra to Lagn". Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 agrees. For Saturn the engine runs two tests and names Sasa Yoga when both pass.
- Dignity. The engine grades Saturn Exalted, Moolatrikona or Own sign. Saturn is exalted in Libra (graded Exalted at every degree), owns Capricorn (Own sign throughout) and owns Aquarius, where the first 20 degrees are graded moolatrikona and the last 10 own sign.
- Kendra. Saturn's house, counted in whole signs from the ascendant, is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th - a kendra.
If both hold, the engine writes a sentence such as "Saturn is exalted in Libra, in your 4th house (a kendra) - a Panchamahapurusha Yoga", followed by its paraphrase of the classical reading.
What the engine decided, and what it leaves out
- Moolatrikona is listed as a qualifying grade. The texts name only own and exaltation signs, but Saturn's moolatrikona band lies inside Aquarius, an own sign, so the extra label changes no result. It matters more for Saturn than for most planets only in the counting: two-thirds of Aquarius carries that label, which is why the sample has so many moolatrikona cases.
- Libra counts at any degree. The engine grades the whole exaltation sign, following BPHS's "exaltation Rasi".
- Kendras are counted from the ascendant only, as both BPHS and Saravali state.
- Retrograde motion is not tested. For Saturn this is a large choice in practice, because a slow planet spends a big share of its time retrograde; the next sections give the count. Combustion, conjunctions and aspects are not tested either.
Which ascendants can have Sasa Yoga
| Saturn in | Falls in a kendra for these ascendants |
|---|---|
| Libra (exalted) | Libra, Capricorn, Aries, Cancer |
| Capricorn (own) | Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, Libra |
| Aquarius (moolatrikona / own) | Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio |
Libra and Capricorn are a square apart, so both serve the four movable ascendants. Aquarius serves the four fixed ones. The four dual ascendants - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces - have no route, since Saturn has no dignity in a dual sign. Sasa therefore has the same shape as Ruchaka: two routes for movable signs, one for fixed, none for dual. The sample agrees: the movable ascendants supplied 179 of the 281 Sasa moments (Cancer 53, Libra 50, Capricorn 39, Aries 37), the fixed ones 102, the dual ones none.
What the classical texts say about Sasa Yoga
- BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 20-22 gives the Sasa native small teeth and face on a body that "is not small", calls him valorous and wise, fond of wandering in forests and mountains and "well versed in the loopholes of the enemy". It also says he "usurps other people's wealth", lists marks on the hands and feet, and ends with rule over parts of the earth and a lifespan.
- Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 8-10 shares the small teeth and face and the forests and hills, and adds forts, a fast pace, craftiness, great valour, leadership of an army, skill as a metallurgist, a fickle mind, devotion to his mother and, again, enjoyment of others' wealth.
- Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, pp. 147-148 (page image), names Makara and Kumbha as Saturn's own houses and Thula as its exaltation "identical with a kendra", then adds: "As in the above cases the lagna, Sani and Chandra should be free from malefic associations and aspects." Its reading is strong and valorous, wise, a wanderer in forests and mountains, with good servants and "like a king"; it repeats the older texts' line about others' wealth.
- Closing the section on p. 148, the same book remarks that a person may have more than one such yoga, which "will make him doubly fortunate". On p. 145 it says a yoga acts most in the dasa or antardasa of its planets.
- Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 147, gives the author's view that Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are limited by the Sun-Moon configuration; it states no Saturn-specific rule.
Where the texts and the engine part
The texts' Sasa portrait is the most mixed of the five: valour and wisdom beside craftiness and a taste for others' property. The engine reframes it as "Classically read as resilient and strategic, values self-reliance, builds through sustained effort." On the rule itself, the engine follows BPHS and Saravali and does not apply Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's requirement that the ascendant, Saturn and the Moon be free of malefic association and aspect. A chart reported here as Sasa can fail that stricter reading, and the worked example below does.
How rare it is
Sasa fired in 281 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 - 9.4 percent, about one chart in eleven, and the highest count of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas in this sample (Malavya 275, Hamsa 246, Ruchaka 219, Bhadra 165). Saturn was in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra in 846 of the 3,000 moments, in any house, and about a third of those fell in a kendra.
| Sasa moments (of 281) by | Count |
|---|---|
| Capricorn / Aquarius / Libra | 107 / 102 / 72 |
| Own sign / Moolatrikona / Exalted | 134 / 75 / 72 |
| 1st / 4th / 7th / 10th house | 67 / 85 / 72 / 57 |
| Saturn retrograde | 110 |
| Saturn combust | 23 |
| Gaj Kesari Yoga also present | 53 |
Read this table with Saturn's pace in mind. Saturn takes years to cross a sign, so in a sample drawn from a fixed span of years the count for each of its signs depends on how many of those years Saturn spent there. That is a property of the sampling window, not of the rule, and it is why this page does not read much into Capricorn and Aquarius outnumbering Libra. Within a year when Saturn is in a qualifying sign, the ascendant decides the house, and the ascendant cycles through all twelve signs every day - so in those years roughly one birth time in three has Saturn angular.
The retrograde row is the other Saturn-specific figure: 110 of the 281, close to two in five. None of the texts consulted cancels Sasa for a retrograde Saturn, and the engine does not either.
Worked example: 23 June 1985, New Delhi
The first moment in the engine's walk with Sasa Yoga is 23 June 1985 at 07:43 IST in New Delhi. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator to follow along. The ascendant is Cancer at 7.22 degrees, so Libra is the 4th sign, Capricorn the 7th and Aries the 10th.
| Graha | Sign and degree | House | Engine notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturn | Libra 28.64 | 4 | Exalted; retrograde |
| Ketu | Libra 22.34 | 4 | Node, retrograde |
| Moon | Leo 3.33 | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 22.83 | 7 | Debilitated; retrograde |
| Venus | Aries 22.52 | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Sun | Gemini 7.92 | 12 | Enemy sign |
| Mars | Gemini 15.42 | 12 | Enemy sign; combust |
| Mercury | Gemini 25.01 | 12 | Own sign |
- Dignity. Saturn is at 28.64 degrees of Libra, its exaltation sign; the engine grades the whole sign Exalted. It qualifies. Saturn is retrograde, which the rule ignores.
- Kendra. Libra is the 4th sign from Cancer, so Saturn is in the 4th house, a kendra. It qualifies.
The engine reports Sasa Yoga: "Saturn is exalted in Libra, in your 4th house (a kendra) - a Panchamahapurusha Yoga."
Now Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's test. Ketu shares Libra with Saturn, and a reader who treats Ketu as a malefic would say Saturn is not free of malefic association. The Moon side is weaker still: the engine also reports Kemadruma for this moment, meaning it found the Moon in Leo with no graha in the 2nd or 12th from it, none in a kendra from it and no graha aspecting it. A friendless Moon is not the same as an afflicted one, but this chart is a fair illustration of how far the bare rule and the stricter reading can diverge.
The rest of the family fails. Jupiter is in the 7th, a kendra, but debilitated in Capricorn, so no Hamsa. Venus is in the 10th in a friendly sign, so no Malavya. Mercury is in its own sign, Gemini, but in the 12th house, so no Bhadra - dignity without an angle. The engine also reports Pasa and Vimala Yoga: Gemini is the 12th sign from Cancer and its lord, Mercury, sits there. The engine's sentence for Vimala here calls that "a trika (6th/8th/12th) lord placed in another trika house", although the 12th lord is in its own 12th house, not another one; the rule counts the case, and only the wording is loose.
Sasa beside Ruchaka and the other three
Sasa and Ruchaka are the two Panchamahapurusha yogas of the natural malefics, and their sign geometry is the same: one exaltation sign and one own sign a square apart, serving the movable ascendants, and a third sign serving the fixed ones. The difference is arrangement. Mars's exaltation sign, Capricorn, is Saturn's own sign, and Saturn's exaltation sign, Libra, is a movable sign beside Mars's own Scorpio. A movable-ascendant chart can in principle carry both, with Mars and Saturn sharing Capricorn in one kendra, or sitting in Aries or Capricorn and Libra or Capricorn in different kendras. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's remark that more than one such yoga makes a person "doubly fortunate" is the text's way of treating such overlap; the engine simply lists each yoga it finds.
Against the two benefic members the contrast is in reach. Hamsa excludes the fixed ascendants and Malavya excludes none, while Sasa excludes the dual ones. And Sasa should not be confused with a Saturn that is merely strong in the 10th or 7th by aspect or company: the rule asks only about sign and house.
What Sasa Yoga does not tell you
The yoga records that Saturn is dignified by sign and angular by house. It does not examine Saturn's aspects or company, the houses it rules for your ascendant, or the condition of the Moon and ascendant that one text requires. This app ties the yoga to the Saturn Mahadasha, following Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's remark that yogas act most in their planets' periods; read that as a timing convention, not a promise. The classical portraits are reported briefly as the texts' claims.
To test your own Saturn against both conditions, run the yoga calculator. It shows the sign, dignity and house it used, and whether Saturn is retrograde, so you can apply the stricter reading yourself.
Questions about Sasa Yoga
- What is Sasa Yoga?
- It is the Panchamahapurusha yoga of Saturn: Saturn in Capricorn or Aquarius (own signs) or Libra (exaltation) and in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant, per BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2.
- Can a Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces ascendant have Sasa Yoga?
- No. Their kendras are all dual signs, where Saturn is neither in its own sign nor exalted. None of the 281 Sasa moments in the sample had a dual ascendant.
- Does retrograde Saturn still give Sasa Yoga?
- Yes, in this app and in BPHS, Saravali and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara as read here; none of them cancels it for retrograde motion. Saturn was retrograde in 110 of the 281 Sasa moments in the sample.
- Is Saturn in Libra in the 4th house Sasa Yoga?
- Yes. Libra is Saturn's exaltation sign and the 4th is a kendra. That placement occurs for a Cancer ascendant, as in the 1985 worked example.
- Why did Sasa fire more often than the other four in the sample?
- It fired 281 times against 275 for Malavya and fewer for the rest. Because Saturn moves slowly, its count depends on how long Saturn spent in its three signs during 1985-2060; the sample reports the count and does not claim it is a general law.
- How common is Sasa Yoga?
- It fired in 281 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 9.4 percent.
- Is Sasa Yoga harmful because Saturn is a malefic?
- The texts list it among the five "great person" yogas, not among afflictions. Their portrait is mixed, and this app paraphrases it as resilient, strategic and self-reliant. It is a named rule about positions, not a verdict.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
