Nauka Yoga needs the seven grahas spread one to a house across the 1st to 7th houses. The rule from BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 14 (whose name list calls it Nisk) and Saravali's Nau Yoga, why it never formed in 3,000 sampled moments, and the engine's first case, in 2207.

In short

Nauka Yoga is the Nabhasa shape in which the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn occupy all seven houses from the 1st to the 7th, which in practice means exactly one graha in each. It never formed in 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060; the engine's walk first met it in 2207. BPHS and Saravali read it as livelihood through water.

Nauka is a boat. Nauka Yoga is the first of four seven-house shapes in the classical list of Nabhasa yogas, and it is far stricter than it first sounds. Seven grahas in seven houses, with every house occupied, leaves no room for doubling up: each house from the 1st to the 7th must hold exactly one graha. This page states the rule as the engine tests it, explains a naming oddity in the BPHS translation, compares the two classical readings, and shows why a shape that is easy to describe almost never occurs. As always, a yoga is a named rule about positions; what a yoga in your chart means covers how much weight one can bear.

The rule: how Nauka Yoga forms

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 14: if all the grahas occupy the seven bhavas from the Lagna, Nauka Yoga occurs - and the sloka adds that "the Grahas should occupy seven continuous Bhavas". The engine tests:

  1. The seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
  2. Houses are whole signs from the ascendant.
  3. Every graha is in one of the houses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7.
  4. Each of those seven houses holds at least one. With seven grahas and seven houses, that forces exactly one graha per house.

Nothing about dignity, combustion, retrogression or aspect enters the test. In the engine's output the yoga has no owning planet; the shape belongs to all seven.

In the names BPHS uses for the bhavas, the block runs from Lagn, the 1st house, through Dhan, Sahaj, Bandhu, Putr and Ari, to Yuvati, the 7th house. It spans the chart from the rising sign to the setting sign, both included, and the yoga asks that this half be occupied without a gap while the other half, the 8th to the 12th, stays empty of all seven grahas.

Nisk or Nauka: a naming slip in the translation

The BPHS translation in the corpus lists the twenty Akriti names in Sl. 3-6, and where Nauka should be it prints "Nisk". Sl. 14, which actually defines the shape, calls it Nauka, and Saravali Ch. 21 opens its own list of 32 with "Nau". The engine's code notes the discrepancy and uses Nauka, the name attached to the rule that is actually stated. Both BPHS files in the library carry the same "Nisk", so it is not a scanning error in one copy.

Choices the engine makes

  • Fill, not confine. Here the text supports the strict reading directly: "seven continuous Bhavas" are to be occupied. The engine applies the same reading to every Akriti shape.
  • Seven grahas. Saravali Ch. 21 means the seven planets throughout. Counting Rahu and Ketu would make nine bodies for seven houses and the "one per house" structure would vanish.
  • Every yoga reported. BPHS Sl. 16-17 says the Sankhya yogas lapse when another Nabhasa yoga forms. Seven grahas one to a house always occupy seven different signs, which is Veena Yoga, and the engine reports Veena alongside Nauka rather than suppressing it.

What the classical texts say about Nauka

Both texts agree on the core: a livelihood connected with water, wealth and fame. They differ in tone. BPHS Sl. 36 adds that the native will be wicked, wretched, dirty and miserly. Saravali Sl. 20-21 lists many gains, great fame, being pleased and strong, and calls the native mean and stingy. So BPHS pairs the wealth with misery, while Saravali pairs it with contentment and strength; both agree on a close-fisted streak.

The app's sentence keeps what the two share: "Classically read as wealth and fame through work connected with water, with a tight-fisted streak worth watching." It leaves out BPHS's harsher words, as it does for the bleaker Nabhasa readings generally.

Saravali places a general rule in the same sloka as Nau Yoga: "This and other Yogas are effective at all times independent of Dasas." BPHS Sl. 50 says the same thing in its own words. Saravali also gives two framing statements for the class: Sl. 5-6 credits the twenty Akriti yogas to Savitracharya, and Sl. 8-10 reads any Akriti yoga as contentment with one's own fortune and earnings through a king. Saravali's rule for the seven-house shapes, Sl. 11, does not print the number seven - it says the planets occupy continuous houses from the ascendant and the other three angles - so the count comes from BPHS Sl. 14. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention the yoga.

How rare it is: a common span, a rare spread

In the engine's sample of 3,000 birth moments 1985-2060, Nauka Yoga never formed. The full walk of 20,000 moments, running from 1985 to 2483, met it twice: first on 25 January 2207, then on 26 October 2370.

The interesting part is why. Fitting the seven grahas inside some block of seven consecutive houses is not hard at all: on the engine's positions it happened in 1,340 of the 3,000 sampled moments, close to half. What is hard is spreading them out so that every house of the block is occupied. That happened in only 4 of the 3,000 - two Koota and two Ardha Chandra moments - and in 29 of the 20,000.

The reason is the inner planets. Mercury is never more than about one sign from the Sun and Venus never more than about two, so the Sun, Mercury and Venus tend to bunch. One graha per house means all three must be in different signs, side by side or nearly so. Then the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each need a sign of their own, and together the seven must leave no gap in a run of seven. Most arrangements fail on the doubling: two grahas in one house and an empty house somewhere else.

The hour adds a final filter. Houses 1 to 7 in whole signs are the half of the chart from the rising sign down to the setting sign - the half below the horizon. Since the Sun sits inside any such cluster, Nauka is a night shape: the two moments the walk found are at 00:48 and 21:50 IST. Of the four seven-house blocks that start at an angle, the walk found each only a handful of times; the eight blocks that start elsewhere, which share the name Ardha Chandra, account for most of the 29.

Worked example: the engine's first Nauka chart, 2207

Because the yoga never formed in the 1985-2060 sample, the worked example is the first moment of the engine's walk that forms it: 25 January 2207 at 00:48 IST, New Delhi. It is presented as the engine's computation for that moment, to show the shape, not as a statement about anyone. You can enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Libra at 8.21 degrees.

  1. All seven inside houses 1 to 7: Jupiter, Moon, Mercury, Sun, Venus, Mars and Saturn, in that order from the 1st. Holds.
  2. Every house occupied - one graha each. Holds.
  3. The inner trio is spread exactly as the rarity argument requires: Mercury one sign behind the Sun, Venus one sign ahead.
  4. Ketu in the 2nd shares a house with the Moon and Rahu sits in the 8th, outside the block; neither counts, so neither breaks the one-per-house pattern.

The engine reports: "All 7 classical grahas (Sun through Saturn) sit in houses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 of your chart, and each of those houses holds at least one - a Nabhasa "Akriti" (shape) Yoga." Its interpretation line is the water, wealth and fame sentence quoted above. The Sun in the 4th house matches the hour, just after midnight.

The engine's full report for this chart has only four yogas: Veena (seven signs occupied), Nauka, Durudhura (grahas on both sides of the Moon) and Ubhayachari (grahas on both sides of the Sun). Those two look at the signs either side of the Moon and of the Sun, counting only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn: here the Moon is flanked by Jupiter and Mercury, and the Sun by Mercury and Venus. A one-per-house spread makes such flanking likely, though not certain, because a neighbour may be the Sun or the Moon itself, or the luminary may sit at the end of the block. Two grahas are debilitated and one is in an enemy sign; none of that matters to the shape.

Nauka and the other seven-house shapes

BPHS Sl. 14 gives four seven-house blocks starting at the four angles: Nauka from the 1st, Koota from the 4th, Chatra from the 7th and Chapa from the 10th. The quoted Saravali rule adds Ardha Chandra for a block starting anywhere else. Between them the five names cover every possible seven-house block, and at most one of them can form in a chart. The four-house shape that also starts at the 1st is Yupa. Nauka holds three kendras - the 1st, 4th and 7th, one graha each - so in principle it could coincide with Maala Yoga, if those three grahas were all benefics, or Sarpa Yoga, if all three were malefics. In the 2207 chart they are Jupiter, the Sun and Saturn, a mix, so neither forms.

What a yoga does not tell you

Nauka Yoga records an unusually even spread of the seven grahas through the lower half of the chart. The classical texts connect it with water and wealth, and differ on whether that wealth comes with misery or contentment. A rule this rare tells you very little about the population of real charts, and nothing about a particular life. It is a named rule about positions, and the engine reports it when the positions satisfy it.

To check any chart for Nauka and the other 31 Nabhasa shapes, use the yoga calculator; it lists each graha's house, so you can see how close your own chart comes to one graha per house.

Questions about Nauka Yoga

What is the rule for Nauka Yoga?
All seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn in the 1st to 7th houses, with every one of those seven houses occupied - which means exactly one graha in each. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 14.
Why does BPHS call it Nisk?
Only the name list in Sl. 3-6 of the corpus translation prints "Nisk". The sloka that defines the shape, Sl. 14, calls it Nauka, and Saravali calls it Nau. The engine uses Nauka.
How rare is Nauka Yoga?
It did not form in any of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. The engine's 20,000-moment walk from 1985 to 2483 met it twice, in 2207 and 2370.
If all my planets are in the first seven houses, do I have Nauka Yoga?
Only if every one of those seven houses holds a graha. Grahas inside the block with a gap somewhere are common - close to half the sampled moments had all seven inside some seven-house block - but the full one-per-house spread is very rare.
Can two planets share a house in Nauka Yoga?
Not among the seven grahas. Seven grahas filling seven houses leaves exactly one for each, so a conjunction anywhere inside the block - the Sun and Mercury in one sign, say - rules the yoga out. Rahu and Ketu are not counted, so either may share a house with a graha, as Ketu does with the Moon in the 2207 example.
Does Nauka Yoga always come with Veena Yoga?
Yes. One graha per house means seven different signs, which is Veena. BPHS Sl. 16-17 says a Sankhya yoga like Veena is not operable when another Nabhasa yoga forms; the engine reports both.
When does Nauka Yoga give results?
BPHS Sl. 50 and Saravali Sl. 20-21 say the Nabhasa yogas act at all times, independent of the dasha periods. Neither text ties Nauka to a period.
