In short

The Upachaya houses are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Ascendant, the houses of growth. BPHS names the four but attaches no separate reading to them. This app's main chart engine therefore does not grade them as a group; only its behavioural layer uses them, crediting Saturn and Mars when they sit in one.

What the term means

Upachaya means "increase" or "growth". The Upachaya houses are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th bhavas from the Ascendant, the houses this app's career and money engine reads for self-effort (3rd), service (6th), profession (10th) and income and gains (11th). The group overlaps the others. The 6th is also a Dusthana, the 10th a Kendra, the 11th a Panaphara and the 3rd an Apoklima.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 lists "Sahaj, Ari, Karm and Labh Bhava" as the Upachaya Bhavas, and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 names them again in its round-up of house groups. Neither passage attaches a reading to the group. The word does work elsewhere as a counting rule: Ch. 37 Sl. 6 forms a Dhan Yog when all three benefics are in Upachaya houses counted from the Moon. The engine does not test that yoga.

How this app uses it

  • The main chart engine has no Upachaya label. Each of the four houses is reported under its other group: the strength table calls the 3rd "apoklima", the 6th "dusthana", the 10th "kendra" and the 11th "panapara".
  • That is deliberate. The engine's notes record that BPHS names the four houses without giving them a favourable reading, so a strong planet in the 6th is still not graded favourable in its planet-in-house line.
  • The behavioural layer is the exception. Its discipline score, which reads Saturn, gives a house component of 25 points (its maximum) when Saturn is in an Upachaya, 18 in a Kendra or Trikona, 6 in a Dusthana and 12 anywhere else. Its anger-triggers reading lists a Mars in an Upachaya as a dampener, "where a malefic's force gets spent on building rather than on people".
  • The career and money engine notes the 6th's double role and credits it on the job side, as the house of paid service.
