In short
Guru is the Sanskrit name for Jupiter, the fifth of the nine grahas in BPHS. This app has it rule Sagittarius and Pisces, counts it a natural benefic, marks it exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn, and gives it full aspects on the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from itself.
What the term means
Guru is the Sanskrit name for Jupiter as a graha. On this site "Guru" and "Jupiter" are the same body; the engine computes its sidereal longitude, sign, degree, nakshatra, house and retrograde flag the same way as for the other planets. Its transit sign, counted from the natal Moon, is also one of the gochar readings.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 10 lists Guru fifth, and Sl. 11 counts it among the benefics. Sl. 12-13 say Guru "confers Knowledge and happiness"; Sl. 14-15 make it a minister beside Sukr; Sl. 19 counts it male and Sl. 20 gives it rule of space. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 25 calls it "prominently Sattvik". BPHS Sl. 49-50 place its exaltation in Kark, deepest at 5 degrees, with the fall in the seventh sign from there, and Sl. 51-54 make the first third of Dhanu its Mooltrikon and the rest its own house. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 10-11 lists Idya, Ijya, Angira and Jiva as other names, and the Bhrigu Sutras head its section "the Great Fortune" (Part I, p. 9).
How this app uses it
- Lordship: Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces.
- Dignity: exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn, deep point 5 degrees; Moolatrikona in Sagittarius from 0 to 10 degrees, own sign in the rest of Sagittarius and in Pisces.
- Aspects: aspectedHouses() adds the 5th and 9th houses to the universal 7th, as Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 32-33 does (see special aspects).
- Nature and friendship: Jupiter is in the BENEFICS list; its natural friends are the Sun, Moon and Mars and its enemies Mercury and Venus.
- Doshas and yogas: Jupiter is one of the two benefics the engine tests for Kendradhipathya Dosha (owning a kendra other than the 1st). Gaj Kesari needs Jupiter in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon, joined or aspected by a benefic, and not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign.
- Combustion and timing: combust within 11 degrees of the Sun; Vimshottari period 16 years.
