Yuti defined: the Sanskrit term for a conjunction, how BPHS and Saravali use it, and why this app counts two grahas as conjunct when they share a sign.

In short

Yuti is the classical term for a conjunction: two or more grahas joined in the same house. BPHS pairs it with drishti as the two ways a graha bears on another, and Saravali gives whole chapters to two to six planets together. This app treats grahas in the same sign, and so the same whole-sign house, as yuti.

What the term means

Yuti means "joining". Two grahas are yuti, or conjunct, when they occupy the same house. It is the closest relation two planets can have, and the classical texts set it beside drishti (aspect) as the other main way one graha influences another.

Where the term comes from

BPHS uses the word constantly, usually in the paired phrase "yuti with, or receiving a Drishti from", as in the Gaj Kesari rule of Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4 and the Upa Pad rule of Ch. 30. Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 counts a kendra lord "yuti with" a kona lord among the combinations that form a yoga. Saravali devotes Ch. 15 to "combinations of two planets (in one House)" and Ch. 16-19 to three, four, five and six planets together, each read as a named combination.

How this app uses it

  • Sign-based: two grahas are conjunct when they share a sign, which in whole-sign houses is the same as sharing a house. No orb in degrees is applied.
  • The yoga rules use it directly: Gaj Kesari accepts the Moon joined with Jupiter, and the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga accepts a kendra lord and a kona lord in one house.
  • The planned conjunction pages report the degree separation alongside the shared sign, since two grahas at opposite ends of a sign are conjunct by this rule but nearly 30 degrees apart.
  • Two grahas very close in longitude raise a separate question, graha yuddha, and closeness to the Sun raises combustion.

A small illustration

In the chart for 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Mars (Aquarius 25.40) and Venus (Aquarius 22.47) are yuti in the 12th house, about three degrees apart. The Moon (Sagittarius 12.66) and Mercury (Sagittarius 16.62) are yuti in the 10th.
