In short
The 8th lord in the 6th house places the ruler of obstruction and longevity in the house of enemies and illness: one dusthana lord in another. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 90 reads it as victory over enemies, with illness and some childhood dangers. The Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names it as Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and this app's engine flags Sarala Yoga.
What the placement means
The 8th house lord rules the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 6th sign, it carries the 8th's themes - obstruction, sudden change, hidden matters, longevity - into the house of opponents, illness, debt, litigation and service.
Counted from the 8th, the 6th is the 11th house - the house of gain from the lord's own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, both houses are dusthanas. Unusually, here BPHS's own verse and the later Vipareeta rule point roughly the same way: the 8th lord in the 6th overcomes the 6th's enemies.
The two houses involved
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44.
The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and an upachaya: enemies, disease, debt and service.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 90
Sl. 90 reads: "If Randhr's Lord is in Ari Bhava, the native will win over his enemies, be afflicted by diseases and during childhood will incur danger through snakes and water." One clause is favourable and two are adverse.
The favourable clause comes first and is the one that matters for the later tradition: the lord of the 8th, set in the house of enemies, defeats them. The adverse clauses attach the 6th's other signification, illness, to the native, and add a childhood danger. They are the text's classical associations, reported here and not as medical advice or a forecast.
The reverse, Sl. 68 - Ari's lord in Randhr - is wholly adverse (illness, hostility, a grasping nature), though the later tradition counts it as Vipareeta too. In BPHS's own words the 8th lord in the 6th is the kinder direction of the pair.
The Vipareeta rule names this placement
The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus quotes Uttara Kalamrita, whose first condition is "lord of the 8th occupying the 12th or 6th". When the dusthana lords are free of relation with other planets, the verse says the native "will become an emperor over other kings and blessed with fame and wealth". That is Vipareeta Raja Yoga. This app's engine flags the 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th as Sarala Yoga every time, without testing the freedom-from-relation condition.
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 give the 8th lord's own rule: "not auspicious", "specifically harmful" if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, auspicious if it also owns a trine, and "not evil" for the Sun and Moon. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale by strength and combine both lordships. The Saravali has no verse here.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 6th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 8th lord | 6th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Virgo | Enemy sign | 1st |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Libra | Enemy sign | 11th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Scorpio | Enemy sign | 9th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Sagittarius | Neutral | 7th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Capricorn | Debilitated | 5th |
| Virgo | Mars | Aquarius | Neutral | 3rd |
| Libra | Venus | Pisces | Exalted | 1st |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Aries | Neutral | 11th |
| Sagittarius | Moon | Taurus | Exalted | none |
| Capricorn | Sun | Gemini | Neutral | none |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Cancer | Enemy sign | 5th |
| Pisces | Venus | Leo | Enemy sign | 3rd |
Two rows are exalted: Libra rising (Venus, the Lagna and 8th lord, in Pisces) and Sagittarius rising (the Moon in Taurus). Leo rising puts Jupiter, lord of the 5th and 8th, debilitated in Capricorn. Five rows are enemy signs. For Libra and Aries rising the 8th lord is also the Lagna lord, so the Ascendant's ruler sits in the 6th as well.
The second lordship's verse for a lord in Ari is usually adverse, which sets it against the Vipareeta reading. As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 6: troubled by enemies when joined by a malefic without benefic aspect. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 54: sons like enemies, or lost, or adopted. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 102: meagre prosperity, always troubled by enemies - which contradicts Sl. 90's victory, so the two cancel there. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 126: illness and enemies. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 30: hostility with siblings, yet affluence. As 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 78: a sickly spouse.
Strength changes the reading
Here the classical frames point in different directions, and none of them gives arithmetic for combining with the others:
- Dignity: by Sl. 145-148, a strong lord gives the full share of Sl. 90 (victory and illness alike). The engine's dignity label is the input.
- The second lordship: a trine or the Lagna confined to the 6th brings an adverse verse along; the Vipareeta reading sits against it.
- Association: the Uttara Kalamrita condition asks for freedom from relation with other planets. The 6th is aspected from the 12th, and specially by Mars (3rd, 11th), Jupiter (2nd, 10th) and Saturn (4th, 9th) - see drishti.
A Sarala Yoga in the engine's list therefore means only that the positional condition is met. The engine does not weigh the planet's dignity, its second lordship or its company, all of which the classical sources treat as decisive.
The same Bhrigu Sutras commentary contains a principle that cuts the other way, stated while discussing Saturn in the 4th: a 6th, 8th or 12th lord associated with a planet "will spoil not only the significations of that planet but also the significations of the house where the two planets are posited". An 8th lord in the 6th that is joined by another planet is therefore read favourably by one passage of the commentary (if the companion is another dusthana lord) and unfavourably by another (if it is any other planet). The commentary does not reconcile the two; this page reports both.
Natural class adds a last layer. By Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, the 8th lord here is a malefic for Aries and Virgo (Mars), Gemini and Cancer (Saturn) and Capricorn (the Sun); a benefic for Taurus and Leo (Jupiter) and Libra and Pisces (Venus); Mercury for Scorpio and Aquarius; the Moon for Sagittarius. The engine's Sarala flag is the same for all of them.
Worked example: Leo rising, Jupiter in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Leo 15.68.
- With Leo rising, the 8th house is Pisces and the 5th is Sagittarius; Jupiter rules both. The 6th is Capricorn.
- Jupiter is in Capricorn at 8.4 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 4, in the 6th. The engine marks it Debilitated.
- Nothing joins Jupiter; Saturn, the 6th lord, aspects the 6th from Scorpio in the 4th.
- The engine's yoga detector reports Sarala Yoga for Jupiter.
From the 8th-lord side this is the "auspicious" row of Ch. 34 - an 8th lord that also owns a trine - and Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 call Jupiter auspicious for Simh Lagn. Sl. 90 applies (victory over enemies, illness), alongside Sl. 54 for the 5th lord in Ari (strained ties with children); they speak of different things, so both stand. Jupiter is debilitated, the "quarter" end of BPHS's scale, and is not free of relation, since the 6th lord aspects it. For the planet-level reading see Jupiter in the 6th house.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 6th house in 276, or 9.2%. That counts moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse is linked above; both together form an exchange of the two dusthana lords (parivartana), which the Uttara Kalamrita verse also lists. The other Sarala placements are the 8th lord in the 8th and in the 12th. One house back, the 8th lord in the 5th (Sl. 89) gives long life and wealth; one house on, the 8th lord in the 7th (Sl. 91) gives two marriages.
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
- Check the birth chart for the 8th lord in the 6th sign, and list every planet with or aspecting it.
- Confirm Sarala Yoga in the yoga calculator, then weigh the classical conditions it does not test.
Questions about the 8th lord in the 6th
- What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 6th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 90: victory over enemies, illness, and dangers in childhood from snakes and water. Scaled by strength; not medical advice and not a forecast.
- Is it Sarala Yoga?
- In this app's engine, yes, every time. The Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th as Vipareeta Raja Yoga, provided the dusthana lords are free of relation with other planets.
- Do BPHS and the Vipareeta rule agree here?
- Partly. Sl. 90 begins with victory over enemies, which is in the same spirit. It also names illness, which the Vipareeta verse does not.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest lord here?
- Libra (Venus exalted in Pisces) and Sagittarius (the Moon exalted in Taurus). Leo gives Jupiter debilitated.
- How common is it?
- 276 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.2%.
