House lords

The lord of the 6th house placed in the 8th: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 68, the Uttara Kalamrita rule that makes it Harsha Yoga, the planet for each Ascendant and a worked chart where the 6th lord is also the Lagna lord.

In short

The 6th lord in the 8th house puts the ruler of enemies and illness into the house of longevity and obstruction: one dusthana lord in another. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 68 reads it harshly, as illness and a grasping, quarrelsome nature. A later rule, quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary, counts the same placement as Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and this app's engine flags it as Harsha Yoga.

What the placement means

The 6th house lord rules the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 8th sign, it carries the 6th's business - enemies, illness, debt, dispute - into the house of longevity, sudden events, obstruction, inheritance and concealed matters.

Counted from the 6th, the 8th is the 3rd house. Counted from the Ascendant, both houses are dusthanas. That double fact divides the texts more sharply than almost any other placement: Parashara's verse reads the combination as a compounding of difficulty, while a rule preserved in a later text reads the same combination as difficulty cancelling itself.

The two houses involved

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and upachaya: enemies, disease, debts, litigation, service.

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is the dusthana BPHS treats with most reserve, and one of the two houses of longevity in Ch. 44. Ch. 34 calls its lord "not auspicious, as he owns the 12th from Dharm Bhava".

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 68

Sl. 68 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Randhr Bhava, the native will be sickly, inimical, will desire others' wealth, be interested in others' wives and be impure." Every clause is adverse. It is among the harshest verses of the Ari series, alongside Sl. 72 for the 12th.

Summarised rather than dwelt on: the verse describes ill health and a grasping, hostile and unscrupulous temperament. As always in this app, that is reported as the text's statement about a combination, never as a description of a reader; the illness clause is a classical association and not medical advice. Read structurally, the 6th's disease and enmity have entered the house of the hidden and the unearned, and the verse turns them into covetousness.

The reverse placement is mixed. Sl. 90, Randhr's lord in Ari, says the native "will win over his enemies", though afflicted by disease and exposed in childhood to dangers from snakes and water. There is a hint in that first clause of the inversion the later tradition develops: the 8th lord in the 6th defeats the 6th's enemies.

The Vipareeta reading

The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus quotes a sloka of Uttara Kalamrita: among its conditions is the "lord of 6th being placed in the 8th or 12th", and when such dusthana lords are free of relation with other planets, the native "will become an emperor over other kings and blessed with fame and wealth". That is the classical source for Vipareeta Raja Yoga in this corpus, and the 6th lord in the 8th is named in it directly, not by analogy. This app's engine flags the case as Harsha Yoga every time it occurs, without testing the freedom-from-relation condition.

So two classical readings exist for one placement, from two different books. BPHS Sl. 68 is adverse; the Uttara Kalamrita verse is strongly favourable, under a condition. Neither text mentions the other. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 (strength, and both lordships combined) and the Bhrigu Sutras principle that a weak 6th lord brings "destruction of enemies" add further angles. This page sets them out side by side. The Saravali has no verse on the placement.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

Gemini rising puts Mars, lord of the 6th and 11th, exalted in Capricorn. Two rows are debilitated: Virgo rising (Saturn, lord of the 5th and 6th, in Aries) and Pisces rising (the Sun in Libra). For Taurus and Scorpio rising, the 6th lord is also the Lagna lord, which places the Ascendant's ruler in the 8th - read through Ch. 24 Sl. 8 as well. For Cancer and Capricorn rising it is also the 9th lord, so a trine lordship falls into the 8th along with it.

Strength changes the reading

With three principles in play, the factors are worth listing separately:

  • Dignity, from the engine's dignity label. Under BPHS's scale a strong lord gives more of Sl. 68; under the Bhrigu Sutras principle a weak 6th lord is the favourable case.
  • The other house: a trine or the Lagna (Taurus, Scorpio, Cancer, Capricorn, Virgo) is the case where being in the 8th costs most, since that good lordship's verse for the 8th also applies.
  • Association: the Uttara Kalamrita condition requires the dusthana lords to be free of relation with other planets. The 8th is aspected from the 2nd, and specially by Mars (5th, 1st), Jupiter (4th, 12th) and Saturn (6th, 11th) - see drishti.

Note that the engine's Harsha flag does not weigh any of these. A Harsha Yoga in the yoga list means the positional condition is met; it says nothing about dignity, second lordship or company, all of which the classical sources treat as decisive.

Worked example: Taurus rising, Venus in Sagittarius

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; it can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 31 December 1985, 14:40 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Taurus 4.33.

  • With Taurus rising, Venus rules the 1st (Taurus) and the 6th (Libra). The 8th is Sagittarius.
  • Venus is in Sagittarius at 11.38 degrees, Mula pada 4, in the 8th. The engine marks it Friendly sign in this chart (neutral by sign alone) and combust.
  • The Sun, ruler of the 4th for Taurus rising, sits beside it at 15.98.
  • The 8th lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn in the 9th, Debilitated.

This is the hardest kind of case to read. As 6th lord in Randhr, Venus carries Sl. 68. As Lagna lord in Randhr, it carries Sl. 8 - which names scholarship alongside illness, anger and several harsh traits. Both verses lean the same way, so Sl. 145-148's cancellation has little to work on. Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 list Venus among the malefics for Vrishabh Lagn. Against that, the engine reports Harsha Yoga for Venus - but Venus is joined by the Sun and combust, not free of relation as the Uttara Kalamrita verse asks. The engine also finds a 5th-9th Raja Yoga for Mercury and Saturn and Vimala Yoga for Mars in this chart, none involving Venus. For the planet-level reading see Venus in the 8th house.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 8th house in 274, or 9.1%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 8th lord in the 6th (Sl. 90), is both a mixed BPHS verse and a Sarala Yoga in the engine; when both happen together the two dusthana lords have exchanged signs (parivartana), which the Uttara Kalamrita verse also lists. The other Harsha placements are the 6th lord in the 6th and in the 12th. One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 7th reduces marital happiness; one house later, the 6th lord in the 9th (Sl. 69) speaks of trade in wood and stone and fluctuating fortunes.

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Check the birth chart for the 6th lord in the 8th sign; note its dignity and companions.
  3. Confirm Harsha Yoga in the yoga calculator, then ask whether the classical freedom-from-relation condition holds.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 8th

What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 8th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 68 is adverse: illness and a hostile, grasping, unscrupulous nature. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength, and not medical advice.
Is the 6th lord in the 8th a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
The Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names it explicitly, provided the dusthana lords are free of relation with other planets. This app's engine flags it as Harsha Yoga without testing that condition.
Which reading is right, BPHS or the Vipareeta rule?
The corpus contains both and neither text addresses the other. This page reports both; a chart's dignity, second lordship and associations are what the classical sources say to weigh.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest lord here?
Gemini: Mars exalted in Capricorn. Virgo and Pisces rising give the lord debilitated.
Does the 6th lord in the 8th affect longevity?
Sl. 68 does not mention longevity, though the 8th is a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44. This app does not make longevity predictions from a placement, and the page does not read one into the verse.
How common is it?
274 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.1%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
