In short
The 6th lord in the 7th house moves the ruler of enemies, illness and debt into the house of marriage and partnership. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 67 reads it as little happiness through marriage in a person who is otherwise famous, virtuous, honoured, enterprising and wealthy. The texts disagree on whether a strong 6th lord makes this better or worse.
What the placement means
The 6th house lord rules the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Standing in the 7th sign, it brings the 6th's themes - dispute, rivalry, illness, debt - into the house of the spouse, business partners, contracts and open dealings with others.
Counted from the 6th, the 7th is the 2nd: the very next sign. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has moved into an angle, the house directly opposite the self. The 6th is the house of open enemies and the 7th the house of the "other" in every relationship, so this is the placement where the texts most readily read conflict into partnership.
The two houses involved
The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and upachaya: enemies, disease, debt, competition, service.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra - marriage, partnerships, trade, dealings with the public - and, in BPHS Ch. 44, one of the two maraka houses used in longevity timing.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 67
Sl. 67 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Yuvati Bhava, the native will be deprived of happiness through wedlock. He will be famous, virtuous, honourable, adventurous and wealthy." One clause is adverse and five are favourable.
The structure is the same as Sl. 61 (the 6th lord in the 1st): a 6th-house loss attached to the house entered - here, marriage - and a set of public goods attached to the person. Fame, honour and wealth are the 7th's outward face (the public, trade, dealings), and "adventurous" is the 6th's competitive drive. That is this page's reading of the clauses; BPHS gives none. The marital clause is the text's statement about a combination, not a prediction about anyone's marriage, and this app does not make one.
The reverse placement leans harder on marriage. Sl. 78, Yuvati's lord in Ari, says the native "will beget a sickly wife", will be hostile to her, quick to anger and "devoid of happiness". Unlike Sl. 67, it offers no compensating public goods. Both directions read the 6th-7th link through the marriage, but the lord of marriage falling into the house of enemies is read the more harshly.
Strength, two ways
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 say the planet gives full, half or a quarter of its verse according to strength, and that a planet with two houses gives both sets of results, contrary ones cancelling. The Bhrigu Sutras, in their sutras on the Sun in the 6th, offer a different principle for the 6th lord specifically: if it is weak, "there will be destruction of enemies", and the commentator generalises that a lord of an evil house "becomes more harmful if it becomes strong". The two texts therefore point in opposite directions on what a strong 6th lord means. This page reports both and does not choose.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add that the owner of Ari "will give evil effects" by lordship. The Saravali has no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 7th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 6th lord | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | Libra | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Taurus | Venus | Scorpio | Neutral | 1st |
| Gemini | Mars | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Capricorn | Debilitated | 9th |
| Leo | Saturn | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 7th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Pisces | Neutral | 5th |
| Libra | Jupiter | Aries | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Scorpio | Mars | Taurus | Neutral | 1st |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Gemini | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Cancer | Enemy sign | 9th |
| Aquarius | Moon | Leo | Friendly sign | none |
| Pisces | Sun | Virgo | Neutral | none |
Leo rising is the row where the 6th lord also owns the 7th: Saturn rules Capricorn (6th) and Aquarius (7th), so here it is in its own sign and moolatrikona for most of it. Cancer rising is the weakest: Jupiter, lord of the 6th and 9th, is debilitated in Capricorn. Capricorn rising puts Mercury (6th and 9th) in an enemy sign. Taurus and Scorpio rising make the 6th lord the Lagna lord too, which puts the Ascendant's ruler in the 7th - Sl. 7 of Ch. 24 then also applies.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label. Under BPHS's scale, stronger means more of Sl. 67; under the Bhrigu Sutras principle, a weaker 6th lord means fewer enemies.
- The other house: a good lordship (the Lagna for Taurus and Scorpio, the 9th for Cancer and Capricorn, the 5th for Virgo) brings its own verse for the 7th, which may contradict Sl. 67 and cancel with it.
- Association: the 7th is aspected from the 1st, and specially by Mars (4th, 12th), Jupiter (3rd, 11th) and Saturn (5th, 10th) - see drishti.
Natural character adds a layer. By Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, the 6th lord here is a natural malefic for five Ascendants (Mars for Gemini and Scorpio, Saturn for Leo and Virgo, the Sun for Pisces) and a benefic for four (Venus for Taurus and Sagittarius, Jupiter for Cancer and Libra). The planet-level pages, such as Jupiter in the 7th and Saturn in the 7th, describe those planets in the house of marriage without any lordship.
Worked example: Cancer rising, Jupiter in Capricorn
This chart came from the engine's deterministic search and can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 6 February 1985, 16:28 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Cancer 4.31.
- With Cancer rising, the 6th house is Sagittarius and the 9th is Pisces, both ruled by Jupiter. The 7th is Capricorn.
- Jupiter is in Capricorn at 6.33 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 3, in the 7th. The engine marks it Debilitated; it is not retrograde or combust.
- The Sun (Capricorn 23.96, ruler of the 2nd) and Mercury (Capricorn 14.66, ruler of the 3rd and 12th, combust) share the 7th.
- The 7th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 5th and aspects the 7th by its special 3rd-house aspect.
Two verses apply to this Jupiter, and they disagree. As 6th lord in Yuvati it carries Sl. 67 (little happiness through marriage). As 9th lord in Yuvati it carries Sl. 103 - the native "beget happiness after marriage, be virtuous and famous". On marriage the two are contrary, which Sl. 145-148 say cancel; on fame and virtue they agree. Ch. 34 Sl. 27-28 call Jupiter auspicious for Kark Lagn, which favours its 9th-house side. The carrier is debilitated: by BPHS's scale, a quarter of either verse; by the Bhrigu Sutras principle, a weak 6th lord, which that text reads as favourable against enemies. The engine's yoga detector reports nothing involving Jupiter in this chart.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 7th house in 261, or 8.7%. That counts sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 7th lord in the 6th (Sl. 78), is quoted above; together the two lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house earlier, the 6th lord in its own 6th forms Harsha Yoga in the engine; one house later, the 6th lord in the 8th (Sl. 68) is both a harsh verse and a Vipareeta condition. The other angle placements, the 1st and the 10th, share Sl. 67's pattern of a specific loss with public gains.
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
- Check the birth chart for the 6th lord in the 7th sign, and note its dignity.
- Read the verse for its other lordship in the 7th beside Sl. 67; where they contradict, Sl. 145-148 say they cancel.
Questions about the 6th lord in the 7th
- What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 67: little happiness through marriage, but famous, virtuous, honourable, adventurous and wealthy. It is scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148).
- Does this placement mean an unhappy marriage?
- Sl. 67 names reduced marital happiness as one clause. It is the text's statement about a combination, often offset by the planet's other lordship; this app does not predict marriages.
- Is a strong or a weak 6th lord better here?
- The texts differ. BPHS scales the verse by strength, so a strong lord gives more of it. The Bhrigu Sutras say a weak 6th lord destroys enemies, and the commentator says an evil-house lord is more harmful when strong.
- Which Ascendant makes the 6th lord also the 7th lord?
- Leo: Saturn rules Capricorn (6th) and Aquarius (7th), so here it is in its own sign.
- What if my 6th lord is also my Lagna lord?
- For Taurus (Venus) and Scorpio (Mars) rising, the planet in the 7th is also the Ascendant lord, so Ch. 24 Sl. 7 applies as well. That verse is conditional on whether the planet is a benefic or a malefic and is among the bleaker in the chapter; it is the text's claim, read with strength, not a prediction.
- How common is it?
- 261 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.7%. That counts moments, not people.
