House lords

The lord of the 6th house placed in the 1st: the mixed BPHS verse, how Ch. 34 treats the 6th lord, the planet for each Ascendant (including the two where it is also the Lagna lord) and a worked chart.

In short

The 6th lord in the 1st house brings the ruler of enemies, illness and debt onto the self. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 61 is a mixed verse: sickly and at odds with one's own people, yet famous, rich, honoured, enterprising and virtuous. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 6th lord is also the Lagna lord, which changes how the placement is read.

What the placement means

The 6th house lord is the planet ruling the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the rising sign, it brings the 6th house's business - opponents, disputes, illness, debt, service and competition - onto the body and the self, which the 1st house represents.

Counted from the 6th, the 1st is the 8th house: from the lord's point of view it has gone into a dusthana of its own. Counted from the Ascendant, a lord of a difficult house has come into the most important house of the chart. Those two counts pull against each other, and Sl. 61 reads like a verse written with both in mind.

The two houses involved

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is both a dusthana and an upachaya. Its page covers enemies, disease, debts, litigation and service as the texts read them.

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the self, the body, vitality and general fortune. It is both a kendra and a trikona, and every other house is counted from it.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 61

Sl. 61 opens the Ari series: "If Ari's Lord is in Tanu Bhava, the native will be sickly, famous, inimical to his own men, rich, honourable, adventurous and virtuous." Two clauses are adverse (illness, enmity with one's own people) and five are favourable.

The adverse clauses are the 6th's significations - disease and enmity - carried into the body and into the native's own circle. The favourable ones are less obvious. Fame, wealth, honour and an adventurous temper can be read as what the 6th's competitive energy produces once it is in the house of the self: a person who fights and is known for it. That is this page's reading of how the clauses fit together; BPHS gives no explanation. The verse says "sickly", which is the text's classical association, reported here and not medical advice.

The reverse direction is conditional and much bleaker. Sl. 6 says that when Lagn's lord is in Ari "and related to a malefic", the native "will be devoid of physical happiness and will be troubled by enemies, if there is no benefic Drishti". In Ch. 24, the lord of the self falling into the 6th is read more harshly than the lord of the 6th rising into the self.

How Ch. 34 treats a 6th lord

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says any planet "owning Sahaj, Ari, or Labh Bhava, will give evil effects". So by lordship the 6th lord is a planet BPHS expects difficulty from, wherever it sits. Sl. 15 adds that a lord of a trine or angle that also owns an evil house "does not cause a Raj Yog by mere relations". That matters for the rows of the table where the 6th lord also owns the 9th (Cancer, Capricorn rising) or is the Lagna lord itself (Taurus, Scorpio): the good lordship is real, but so is the 6th.

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scale the effect by strength (full, half, a quarter) and combine both lordships of a two-house planet, contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus give no verse for the 6th lord in the 1st.

Taurus and Scorpio rising are a category of their own. There the 6th lord is also the 1st lord (Venus, Mars), so "the 6th lord in the 1st" is the Lagna lord in its own sign, and the reading of the Ascendant lord dominates. Cancer rising puts Jupiter, lord of the 6th and 9th, exalted in Cancer - a strong carrier for a mixed lordship. Gemini (Mars, also 11th lord), Leo (Saturn, also 7th lord) and Libra (Jupiter, also 3rd lord) put the 6th lord in an enemy sign. For Aquarius and Pisces rising the 6th lord is a luminary (the Moon, the Sun) ruling nothing else.

Strength changes the reading

With a verse that mixes good and bad, the question is how strength interacts with each half. Sl. 145-148 do not split verses; they say the whole effect comes in proportion to strength. In practice readers weigh three things BPHS names:

  • Dignity, from the engine's dignity label.
  • The other lordship: the Lagna itself (Taurus, Scorpio), the 9th (Cancer, Capricorn), the 5th (Virgo), the 3rd or 11th (more upachaya lordship: Aries, Libra, Gemini, Sagittarius), or the 7th (Leo).
  • Association: the 1st receives the 7th aspect from the 7th, and special aspects from Mars (10th, 6th), Jupiter (9th, 5th) and Saturn (11th, 4th) - see drishti. Sl. 6, the reverse verse, shows how much weight Ch. 24 can give a benefic aspect.

The planet's nature colours it further. A 6th lord that is a natural malefic - Mars or Saturn - sits differently in the Lagna from a benefic such as Jupiter or Venus, and Mercury, which Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 call neutral, takes the colour of its company. The planet-in-house pages, for example Mercury in the 1st, describe those differences before any lordship is applied.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, Mercury in the Lagna

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart, which can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 27 January 1987, 07:11 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Capricorn 11.42.

  • With Capricorn rising, the 6th house is Gemini and the 9th is Virgo; Mercury rules both.
  • Mercury is in Capricorn at 22.68 degrees, Shravana pada 4, in the 1st. The engine marks it Friendly sign in this chart (neutral by sign alone) and combust.
  • The Sun, ruler of the 8th (Leo) for Capricorn rising, is beside it at 12.9.
  • Saturn, the Lagna lord, is in Scorpio in the 11th and aspects the 1st by its special 3rd-house aspect.

Read against the texts, this is a 6th lord whose second house is a trine. Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 name Venus and Mercury as the auspicious planets for Makar Lagn and call the Sun neutral, so Mercury's 9th-house lordship is the side the text favours; Sl. 15 says that because it also owns the 6th, it does not make a Raj Yog by mere relation. Sl. 61 applies to it in full wording, and Sl. 145-148 would combine it with Mercury's 9th-lord verse, Sl. 97 (Dharm's lord in Lagn: fortunate, honoured, learned), cancelling where they conflict. Combustion beside the Sun is a weakening the engine reports. The engine's yoga detector reports nothing that names Mercury in this chart.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 1st house in 244, or 8.1%. That is a count of moments, not of people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 1st lord in the 6th, is Sl. 6, quoted above. If both lords sit in each other's signs, the two have exchanged (parivartana). The 6th lord in the next house, the 2nd, gets a more favourable verse (Sl. 62: enterprising, known among his people, a skilful speaker, living abroad); in the 12th, the 6th lord in the 12th (Sl. 72) is among the harshest of the series. The 6th lord in its own house, the 6th lord in the 6th, is where the engine's Harsha Yoga begins.

  1. Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Read the 6th lord from the table and check, in the birth chart calculator, whether it stands in the rising sign.
  3. If you are Taurus or Scorpio rising, read the Lagna lord's own pages first; the 6th-lord reading is secondary there.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 1st

What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 1st house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 61: sickly, famous, at odds with one's own people, rich, honourable, adventurous and virtuous. The chapter scales this by the lord's strength; the health clause is a classical association, not medical advice.
Is the 6th lord in the Lagna bad?
BPHS gives a mixed verse, mostly favourable in its clauses. Ch. 34 says owning the 6th gives evil effects, and Sl. 145-148 weigh that against the planet's other lordship and strength.
What if my 6th lord is also my Lagna lord?
That happens for Taurus (Venus) and Scorpio (Mars) rising. The planet is then in its own sign in the Lagna, and its Lagna lordship is read first.
Does this placement mean I will have enemies?
Sl. 61 names enmity with one's own people as one clause among seven. It is the text's claim about a combination; this app does not predict conflicts.
How common is it?
244 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.1%.
