In short
The 1st lord in the 6th house places the ruler of the rising sign in a dusthana, the house of enemies, disputes, debts and illness. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 6 is a conditional verse: only when the lord is joined to a malefic and has no benefic aspect does the text speak of lost physical ease and trouble from enemies. Ch. 12 separately lists the 6th among houses that reduce bodily comfort, though for Taurus, Scorpio and Libra rising the lord is in its own sign or exalted there.
What the placement means
The planet that rules the rising sign, the 1st house lord, represents the person. In the 6th house it stands in the sign the texts associate with enemies, disputes, illness, debt and service. It is the first of the three houses the engine groups as dusthanas (6, 8 and 12) that the Lagna lord can reach.
The 6th is also an upachaya, a house of growth through effort, which is why readings of it are rarely one-sided. BPHS reflects that: its verse for this placement is conditional, not a flat statement.
The two houses involved
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body and temperament (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2), and its lord stands for the person's physical ease.
The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is, in Ch. 11 Sl. 7, the house of the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers and the step-mother. Ari literally means enemy. The house page covers its full range.
What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 6th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 6 reads: if the Lagna lord is in the 6th "and related to a malefic", the native will be devoid of physical happiness and troubled by enemies, "if there is no benefic Drishti". The wording is identical in bphs-alt.txt.
Unlike the verses on either side of it, Sl. 6 is built from conditions. It names a result only when two things hold: the Lagna lord is related (by conjunction or aspect) to a malefic, and no benefic aspects it. The text says nothing about a Lagna lord in the 6th that is unafflicted or that receives a benefic aspect. That silence is part of the reading: BPHS does not supply a bad result for this placement on its own.
Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 is broader. It says that if the Lagna lord is joined by a malefic, or is in the 8th, 6th or 12th, "physical felicity will diminish", and that a Lagna lord in debilitation, combustion or an enemy's sign brings illness. The same verse goes on to say that benefics in angles or trines counter these indications. Ch. 12 therefore reads the 6th house itself as a weakening position, while Ch. 24 asks for malefic contact as well. Both are reported here; they agree in direction and differ in how much they require.
The verses about the body are classical associations, not medical statements, and nothing on this page is medical advice. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for the Lagna lord in the 6th.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The table is the engine's lordship arithmetic with the dignity its rule returns for the planet in the 6th sign, using natural relationships only.
| Ascendant | 1st lord | Other house it rules | 6th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 8th (Scorpio) | Virgo | Enemy sign |
| Taurus | Venus | 6th (Libra) | Libra | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Gemini | Mercury | 4th (Virgo) | Scorpio | Neutral |
| Cancer | Moon | none | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Leo | Sun | none | Capricorn | Enemy sign |
| Virgo | Mercury | 10th (Gemini) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Libra | Venus | 8th (Taurus) | Pisces | Exalted |
| Scorpio | Mars | 6th (Aries) | Aries | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 4th (Pisces) | Taurus | Enemy sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 2nd (Aquarius) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Aquarius | Saturn | 12th (Capricorn) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Pisces | Jupiter | 10th (Sagittarius) | Leo | Friendly sign |
Three Ascendants change the picture completely. For Taurus rising Venus owns both the 1st and the 6th, so in Libra it is in its own sign or moolatrikona. For Scorpio rising Mars owns the 1st and 6th and sits in Aries, again own sign or moolatrikona. For Libra rising Venus goes to Pisces, its exaltation. In those charts the Lagna lord is strong by sign even though the house is a dusthana. At the other end, four Ascendants (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius) put the lord in an enemy's sign: Mars in Virgo, the Sun in Capricorn, Jupiter in Taurus, Saturn in Cancer.
Strength changes the reading
Because Sl. 6 is conditional, the first thing to check is contact. Which planets share the 6th with the Lagna lord, and are any of them malefics? The engine's malefics are the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Then: does a benefic aspect the 6th? Planets in the 12th aspect it by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter also from the 2nd and 10th, and the drishti glossary entry explains the special aspects.
Ownership adds a second layer. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the owner of the 6th gives evil effects; for Taurus and Scorpio rising the Lagna lord is that owner, so the Lagna lordship ("specially auspicious") and the 6th lordship are carried by one planet. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says that when one planet's two lordships indicate contrary results, they cancel. The dignity of the planet then decides how much of whatever remains comes through.
The three strong Ascendants also show where the verse is silent. For Taurus and Libra rising the Lagna lord is Venus, itself a benefic, so Sl. 6's condition depends entirely on what else is in or aspects the 6th. For Scorpio rising the Lagna lord is Mars, a natural malefic, sitting in its own sign; Sl. 6 speaks of the lord being "related to a malefic" and does not say whether a malefic Lagna lord counts as its own affliction. The text does not settle that question, and this page does not settle it for the text. For Libra rising there is one more layer: exalted Venus in Pisces is also the 8th lord, so it carries a second dusthana lordship into the 6th, and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the 8th lord's results depend on its associations.
One geometric fact applies to every row. A planet in the 6th casts its seventh-house aspect on the 12th, so the Lagna lord here always looks across at the other dusthana. The engine's aspect rule records that aspect; BPHS Ch. 24 does not comment on it for this placement.
Worked example: Virgo rising, Mercury combust in Aquarius
The engine's deterministic search returned: 24 February 1985, 21:42 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Virgo 28.04. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator to check.
- Virgo rising makes Mercury the 1st lord; it also rules Gemini, the 10th.
- Mercury is in Aquarius at 16.94 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 4, in the 6th house. Not retrograde. The engine marks it combust, with dignity "Friendly sign".
- The Sun is in the same sign at Aquarius 12.36, which is why Mercury is combust. The Sun rules Leo, the 12th, for Virgo rising.
- The 6th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio at 4.37 in the 3rd house, in an enemy's sign. Under the engine's aspect rule no graha other than the nodes aspects the 6th.
This chart meets both conditions of Sl. 6 as written. The Lagna lord is joined by the Sun, a natural malefic, and no benefic aspects the house. Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 adds that the Lagna lord is in the 6th and combust, two of its weakening conditions. Against that, Mercury is in a friendly sign and is a Kendra lord as well (the 10th). BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 says Mercury takes on the nature of the planets it is with, so here it takes on the Sun's. This app reports what the text says of such a configuration; it does not turn it into a statement about anyone's health or disputes.
The engine's yoga detector adds one flag that bears on the same house. The Sun, the companion here, is the 12th lord for Virgo rising, and a 12th lord placed in the 6th is one of the conditions of Vimala Yoga, which the engine reports for this chart. That rule, which the engine's code attributes to Advanced Predictive Astrology's case studies rather than to a BPHS sloka, reads a dusthana lord in a dusthana as turning difficulty into resilience. It concerns the Sun, not the Lagna lord, but it shows that the same conjunction BPHS Sl. 6 reads as affliction is read differently by a later rule.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 6th house in 265, or 8.8%. That is a property of the sampled moments, not of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse placement is the 6th lord in the 1st house. The neighbours are the 1st lord in the 5th and the 1st lord in the 7th; the other dusthana placements are the 1st lord in the 8th and the 1st lord in the 12th. For the worked example's planet see Mercury in the 6th house. Your rising sign comes from the Lagna calculator.
Questions about the 1st lord in the 6th house
- What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 6th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 6: if the Lagna lord in the 6th is related to a malefic and has no benefic aspect, the native lacks physical happiness and is troubled by enemies. The verse names no result outside those conditions.
- Is the Lagna lord in the 6th always bad?
- BPHS does not say so. Ch. 24 makes it conditional, and for Taurus, Scorpio and Libra rising the lord is in its own sign or exalted there. Ch. 12 does list the 6th among houses that reduce bodily ease.
- Does this placement mean illness?
- The texts associate the 6th with illness and enemies. Those are classical associations, reported as such; nothing here is medical advice or a health prediction.
- What counts as a benefic aspect here?
- An aspect on the 6th from Jupiter, Venus, a strong Moon or a well-associated Mercury, using the seventh-house aspect plus Jupiter's 5th and 9th. Check them in your chart in the birth chart calculator.
- How common is it?
- 265 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.8%) in the engine's sample.
