In short
The 1st lord in the 5th house puts the ruler of the rising sign in a trine, the house of children, intelligence and past merit. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 5 reads it cautiously for children but calls the native honourable and dear to the king, while Ch. 16 counts the Lagna lord in a trine among the conditions for happiness through children. The two chapters weigh the placement differently, and this page sets them side by side.
What the placement means
The 1st house lord is the ruler of the rising sign. When it occupies the fifth sign from the Ascendant, it sits in the 5th house, which the texts read for children, learning, intelligence, authority and mantra. The person's own planet is placed in the house of what they produce and pass on.
The 5th is a trikona (trine), and the 1st is both an angle and a trine. A Lagna lord in the 5th is therefore a trine lord in a trine, a position the general rules of BPHS treat favourably. The chapter devoted to house lords is more reserved, which is what makes this placement worth reading carefully.
The two houses involved
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body, vigour and nature of the person (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2).
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is listed in Ch. 11 Sl. 6 for amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty or authority, and fall from position. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 groups the 5th with the 9th as houses "specially for wealth". The house page develops all of this.
What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 5th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 5 says that with the Lagna lord in the 5th the native "will have mediocre progenic happiness", will lose his first child, and will be honourable, given to anger and dear to the king. bphs-alt.txt reads the same.
The verse has two halves that pull apart. The second half (honour, royal favour, a quick temper) is about standing and character, and fits the 5th as a house of authority in Ch. 11. The first half is about children and is guarded, including a line about the first child that this page reports only as the text's statement. It is not a forecast about any family, and this app does not make forecasts of that kind.
The same book reads the placement more warmly elsewhere. BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3, on the 5th house, says that if the lords of the Lagna and the 5th are in their own signs, in angles or in trines, "one will enjoy thorough happiness through his children", and that the 5th lord joined with the Lagna lord in a good house brings children early. A Lagna lord in the 5th meets the trine condition for itself; whether the full condition holds depends on where the 5th lord is. The two chapters therefore disagree in tone, and BPHS gives its own method for such cases in Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148: weigh the strengths, let contrary indications cancel, and let different ones both come to pass.
The Lagna lord and the 5th lord also meet in BPHS's chapter on Raja Yoga. Ch. 39 Sl. 3-5 says Raja Yogas are judged from the natal Lagna lord and 5th lord taken together, and Sl. 6-7 names Maha Raj Yoga when those two lords exchange signs. If the 5th lord sits in the 1st while the Lagna lord sits in the 5th, the condition is met. The engine also flags such sign exchanges as Parivartana Yoga. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The table is the engine's lordship arithmetic. The dignity column uses the engine's rule with natural relationships only.
| Ascendant | 1st lord | Other house it rules | 5th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 8th (Scorpio) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Taurus | Venus | 6th (Libra) | Virgo | Debilitated |
| Gemini | Mercury | 4th (Virgo) | Libra | Friendly sign |
| Cancer | Moon | none | Scorpio | Debilitated |
| Leo | Sun | none | Sagittarius | Friendly sign |
| Virgo | Mercury | 10th (Gemini) | Capricorn | Neutral |
| Libra | Venus | 8th (Taurus) | Aquarius | Friendly sign |
| Scorpio | Mars | 6th (Aries) | Pisces | Friendly sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 4th (Pisces) | Aries | Friendly sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 2nd (Aquarius) | Taurus | Friendly sign |
| Aquarius | Saturn | 12th (Capricorn) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Pisces | Jupiter | 10th (Sagittarius) | Cancer | Exalted |
This is one of the friendliest tables in the Lagna-lord series: eight of the twelve Ascendants put the lord in a friendly sign. Pisces rising is the strongest, with Jupiter (lord of the 1st and 10th) exalted in Cancer. Two Ascendants give debilitation: Taurus rising, where Venus falls in Virgo, and Cancer rising, where the Moon falls in Scorpio. Virgo rising alone gives a neutral sign, Mercury in Capricorn.
The "other house" column matters more here than in most tables, because the 5th is a house BPHS reads for children and Sl. 145-148 says both lordships come with the planet. No Ascendant's lord also owns the 5th; instead each brings a different second house into it. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising it is the 4th, another angle; for Virgo and Pisces the 10th; for Capricorn the 2nd. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the lord also owns the 6th, and for Aries and Libra the 8th. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says owners of the 6th give evil effects and that the 8th lord is not auspicious, so for those four Ascendants a difficult lordship travels into a trine alongside the Lagna lordship. Cancer and Leo rising, ruled by the luminaries, bring no second house at all.
Strength changes the reading
For the children side of the reading, Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 names the factors that weaken it: a 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or combust, or with malefics and weak. Those apply to the 5th lord, which for most Ascendants is a different planet from the Lagna lord, so a reader has to locate both. For the person's own condition, Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 applies as it does to every Lagna-lord placement: debilitation, combustion or an enemy's sign weakens the Lagna lord, and a trine placement otherwise supports bodily comfort.
For Taurus and Cancer rising, then, the Lagna lord is in a good house but a poor sign, and Sl. 145-148 would scale its results down. For Pisces rising the opposite holds. Companions in the 5th matter too: Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 lists Jupiter, Venus, full Moon and well-associated Mercury as benefics, and Ch. 16 reads benefic or malefic company in the 5th directly into the result for children.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, Mars in Pisces
This chart is the engine's deterministic search result: 6 March 1985, 00:19 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 9.38. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator.
- Scorpio rising makes Mars the 1st lord; Mars also rules Aries, the 6th.
- Mars is in Pisces at 29.48 degrees, Revati pada 4, in the 5th house: the very last degree of the sign. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Friendly sign".
- Venus (lord of the 7th and 12th for Scorpio rising) is in Pisces at 27.43, exalted. Mercury (lord of the 8th and 11th) is in Pisces at 4.15, debilitated and combust.
- The 5th lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn at 12.34, in the 3rd house, debilitated. Under the engine's aspect rule nothing other than the nodes aspects the 5th.
Set against Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3, the chart meets half the condition: the Lagna lord is in a trine, but the 5th lord is in the 3rd, which is neither its own sign nor an angle nor a trine, and it is debilitated. The 5th itself holds an exalted benefic (Venus) and a debilitated, combust Mercury, which Ch. 34 treats as taking on the nature of its company. BPHS would expect a partial result from Ch. 24 Sl. 5, and the chart offers no exchange between the 1st and 5th lords, so the Maha Raj Yoga of Ch. 39 does not form.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 5th house in 215, or 7.2%, a little below one in twelve. That describes the sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case, the 5th lord in the 1st house (Sl. 49), speaks of scholarship and children alongside some harsher traits. One sign either side are the 1st lord in the 4th and the 1st lord in the 6th; the other trine is the 1st lord in the 9th. For the classical pairing of trine lords see the 5th and 9th lords Raja Yoga, and for the worked example's planet, Mars in the 5th house. The Lagna calculator finds your rising sign.
Questions about the 1st lord in the 5th house
- What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 5th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 5: mediocre happiness through children, a line about the first child, and an honourable, quick-tempered native dear to the king. Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 separately counts a Lagna lord in a trine among the conditions for happiness through children.
- Does this placement mean I will lose a child?
- No. Sl. 5 contains that line, and this page reports it as the text's statement only. The same book gives more favourable rules in Ch. 16, and this app does not turn any single verse into a prediction about a family.
- When does it form a Raja Yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 6-7 names Maha Raj Yoga when the Lagna lord and the 5th lord exchange signs, that is, when the 5th lord is also in the 1st.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
- Pisces rising, with Jupiter exalted in Cancer. Taurus and Cancer rising give debilitated lords (Venus in Virgo, the Moon in Scorpio).
- How common is it?
- 215 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.2%) in the engine's sample.
