In short
The 5th lord in the 1st house puts the ruler of intelligence and children into the Lagna, the house of the self. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 49 reads it as a learned person with happiness from children, though also miserly and sharp in dealings. Because the 5th is a trine and the 1st an angle, Ch. 34 treats the placement as yoga-forming.
What the placement means
A house lord is the planet that rules the sign on a house, and it carries that house's business wherever it sits. "The 5th lord in the 1st house" means the planet ruling the 5th sign from the Ascendant is standing in the Ascendant sign itself, so the matters of the 5th - learning, judgement, children, past merit - are brought onto the person.
Counted from the 5th, the 1st is the 9th house: the lord has moved into the house that stands in trine to its own. That is why this placement sits in a small group the texts treat with favour. Both houses belong to the trines, and the 1st is also an angle.
The two houses involved
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is the house BPHS names Putr: its page covers what the texts read there, from children to intelligence and mantra. It is one of the three trikonas, the houses of fortune.
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body and the self, and the reference point for every other house. It is unique in being both a trikona and a kendra. This app counts houses whole-sign (whole-sign houses), so the placement holds when the 5th sign's ruler occupies the rising sign.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 49
BPHS Ch. 24 opens the Putr section with this very placement. Sl. 49 says that when Putr's lord is in Lagn the native "will be scholarly, be endowed with progenic happiness", and then turns: he will also be "a miser, be crooked and will steal others' wealth." The second half of the verse is harsh, and it is the text's claim about a type, not a statement about anyone reading this page.
The verse splits cleanly along the two houses. Scholarship and children are 5th-house matters arriving intact in the self. The rest describes a person whose judgement is turned toward their own advantage - a reading of a 5th-house faculty (intellect) carried into the most self-directed house of the chart. Compare the reverse, Sl. 5: Lagn's lord in Putr gives "mediocre progenic happiness", loss of the first child, honour and anger. Read together, the two directions are not symmetrical; the 5th lord coming to the self is the more favoured for children.
Like every verse in the chapter, Sl. 49 is not meant to stand alone. Sl. 145-148 close Ch. 24 by saying the results are to be judged by strength: a strong lord gives the full result, a middling one half, a weak one a quarter. A planet that rules two houses gives both sets of results, and where they contradict, they cancel.
The Ch. 34 rule that makes this a yoga
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says a Kon lord "will give auspicious results" and names Putr and Dharm as the houses "specially for wealth". Sl. 11-12 then list the relations that make a royal yoga, and one of them is simply "a Lord of a Kon is in a Kendr". The 5th lord in the 1st satisfies that condition by itself. Sl. 15 adds the brake: if the planet also owns an evil house, the mere relation does not produce Raja Yoga. This app's own Kendra-Kona check is narrower than Sl. 11-12; it looks for the two lords conjunct or in mutual aspect, so the placement on its own is not flagged.
The Saravali and Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus were searched for a verse on this placement; neither gives one.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The rows below come from the engine's lordship table. The dignity column is what the engine's dignity rule returns for that planet in the rising sign with no chart supplied (natural relationships only); the last column is the other house the planet rules, which Sl. 145-148 says must be read alongside.
| Ascendant | 5th lord | 1st house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun | Aries | Exalted | none |
| Taurus | Mercury | Taurus | Friendly sign | 2nd |
| Gemini | Venus | Gemini | Friendly sign | 12th |
| Cancer | Mars | Cancer | Debilitated | 10th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Leo | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Virgo | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Libra | Saturn | Libra | Exalted | 4th |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Scorpio | Friendly sign | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | 12th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Capricorn | Friendly sign | 10th |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Aquarius | Neutral | 8th |
| Pisces | Moon | Pisces | Neutral | none |
Three Ascendants make the 5th lord the same planet as a Kendra lord, the case Ch. 34 Sl. 13 calls "specially a Yog Karak": Cancer (Mars, 5th and 10th), Libra (Saturn, 4th and 5th) and Capricorn (Venus, 5th and 10th). Of those, Libra's Saturn is also exalted in the rising sign, while Cancer's Mars is debilitated there - the same yogakaraka at opposite ends of dignity. Aries rising gives the Sun exalted in Aries, ruling nothing else. At the other extreme are the Ascendants where Sl. 15's brake applies, because the 5th lord also rules a dusthana: Gemini and Sagittarius (12th), Leo and Aquarius (8th), Virgo (6th).
Strength changes the reading
Sl. 49 itself carries no condition, unlike several verses in the same section that split by benefic or malefic association. The conditions come from the chapter's closing rule and from Ch. 34. In practice that means three questions about the planet in the Lagna:
- Its dignity: an exalted or own-sign lord sits at the "full" end of Sl. 145-148, a debilitated one at the "quarter" end.
- Its second lordship: a trine-plus-angle owner (the yogakaraka rows) strengthens the Ch. 34 reading; a trine-plus-dusthana owner weakens it.
- What joins or aspects it: the 1st is aspected by any planet in the 7th, and by Mars, Jupiter or Saturn from their special aspects. BPHS does not give a weighting for these; it says only that association matters.
Natural character matters too. Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 calls Jupiter and Venus benefics, Saturn, Mars and the Sun malefics, and Mercury neutral. A benefic 5th lord in the Lagna and a malefic one are both trine lords, so both count as auspicious by lordship, but the planet pages - Saturn, Jupiter, Mars - describe very different temperaments sitting in the house of the self.
Worked example: Libra rising, Saturn exalted in the 1st
This chart was found by the engine's deterministic search, not picked to flatter the placement. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 11 July 1985, 12:57 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Libra 1.01.
- With Libra rising the 5th house is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn. Saturn also rules Capricorn, the 4th: one trine and one angle, the yogakaraka arrangement of Ch. 34 Sl. 13.
- Saturn sits in Libra at 27.97 degrees, Vishakha pada 3, in the 1st house. It is retrograde, not combust, and the engine marks it Exalted.
- Ketu is also in Libra, at 21.37, so the 5th lord shares the Lagna with a node. Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give results according to the lords they join.
- The Moon in Aries, in the 7th, aspects the Lagna by its 7th-house aspect, and Saturn's own 7th aspect falls back on it.
Read against the texts: Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 names Saturn among the auspicious planets for Tula Lagn, so the lordship side agrees; Sl. 49 then applies with a strong carrier, which Sl. 145-148 would place at the full end of the scale. The engine's yoga detector, run on this chart, reports Sasa Yoga for Saturn (an exalted Saturn in an angle) and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga between the Moon, ruler of the 10th, and Saturn, because the two stand in mutual aspect. That second flag comes from the aspect, not from the placement alone.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 1st house in 204, or 6.8%. That is a property of the sky and the clock, not a count of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse placement, the 1st lord in the 5th house, is Sl. 5 quoted above. When both happen at once the two lords have swapped signs, which the texts call parivartana, and Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 lists such an exchange between an angle lord and a trine lord as yoga-forming. One house along, the 5th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 50) speaks of many sons, wealth and fame; at the other end of the cycle the 5th lord in the 12th (Sl. 60) speaks of little happiness from one's own children. The placement in this page's sibling trine, the 5th lord in the 9th, is the other trine-to-trine case.
- Find the rising sign with the Lagna calculator and read the 5th lord off the table.
- Open the birth chart and check whether that planet occupies the rising sign.
- Note its dignity, its second house, and the planets that join or aspect the Lagna.
Questions about the 5th lord in the 1st
- What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 1st house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 49: the native will be scholarly and have happiness from children, but will also be miserly, crooked and take others' wealth. The chapter's closing verses scale this by the planet's strength and combine it with any second house it rules.
- Is the 5th lord in the 1st a Raja Yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 counts a trine lord placed in an angle as yoga-forming, and the 1st is an angle. Sl. 15 withholds that when the planet also owns an evil house. This app's Kendra-Kona detector is narrower: it needs the two lords conjunct or in mutual aspect.
- Does this placement mean I will have children?
- No verse in this project's corpus makes a promise of that kind, and this app does not turn a placement into a prediction. Sl. 49 names "progenic happiness" as one of several qualities, read by the text alongside strength and association.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
- By the engine's sign-level dignity, Aries (the Sun exalted) and Libra (Saturn exalted, also ruling the 4th). Libra, Cancer and Capricorn make the 5th lord a yogakaraka; Cancer's Mars, however, is debilitated in the rising sign.
- How common is the 5th lord in the 1st?
- In 204 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 6.8%. That describes moments in time, not people.
