In short
The 5th lord in the 2nd house carries the ruler of children and intelligence into the house of family, speech and accumulated wealth. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 50 gives one of the most favourable verses of the Putr series: many children and wealth, a householder who is honoured, devoted to the spouse and well known. Strength and the planet's other lordship scale it.
What the placement means
The planet ruling the 5th sign from the Ascendant is the 5th house lord. When it stands in the 2nd sign, the matters of the 5th - offspring, intellect, the merit a person is born with - are delivered into the house of family, stored wealth and speech.
Counted from the 5th, the 2nd is the 10th house, an angle from the lord's own house. A planet in the 10th from its own sign is, in the language of the texts, active on its own behalf. The pairing of these two houses is also old and specific: Parashara calls the 5th one of the two houses "specially for wealth", and the 2nd is the house of wealth itself.
The two houses involved
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona, the house BPHS reads for children, intelligence and judgement. Its own page sets out those significations in full.
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) covers family, speech, food and the wealth a person holds. It is neither an angle nor a trine. BPHS Ch. 44 also names it the stronger of the two maraka houses, a classification about timing in longevity calculations that the 2nd-house page explains.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 50
Sl. 50 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Dhan Bhava, the native will have many sons and wealth, be a pater familias, be honourable, be attached to his spouse and be famous in the world." Every clause is favourable; there is no rider about malefics, which several other verses in the Putr section carry.
The verse joins both houses' themes almost literally. "Many sons" is the 5th; "wealth" and "pater familias" (the head of a household) are the 2nd, the house of the family as a unit that holds resources. "Attached to his spouse" is less obvious, and BPHS gives no reason for it. The verse is written to a male native, as the whole chapter is; read in neutral terms it describes devotion to a partner.
The reverse placement reads differently. BPHS Sl. 17, Dhan's lord in Putr, says the native will be wealthy and that the sons, too, will be "intent on earning wealth", which frames the money-and-children link from the side of the 2nd. Sl. 50 frames it from the side of the 5th: the children and judgement bring the household and its wealth.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 still applies. The effect comes in full, half or a quarter according to the lord's strength, and a planet ruling a second house gives that lordship's results too, contrary results cancelling. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 supports the reading from the lordship side: a trine lord "will give auspicious results". No verse in the Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus addresses the 5th lord in the 2nd.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship table gives the planet for each rising sign. The dignity column is the engine's rule for that planet in that sign without a chart (natural relationships only); the last column is the other house it owns.
| Ascendant | 5th lord | 2nd house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun | Taurus | Enemy sign | none |
| Taurus | Mercury | Gemini | Own sign | 2nd |
| Gemini | Venus | Cancer | Enemy sign | 12th |
| Cancer | Mars | Leo | Friendly sign | 10th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Virgo | Enemy sign | 8th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Libra | Exalted | 6th |
| Libra | Saturn | Scorpio | Enemy sign | 4th |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Capricorn | Exalted | 12th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Aquarius | Friendly sign | 10th |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Pisces | Debilitated | 8th |
| Pisces | Moon | Aries | Neutral | none |
For Taurus and Scorpio rising the same planet rules both the 2nd and the 5th (Mercury, Jupiter), so the placement is simply that planet in its own sign and own house, joining the two wealth-related houses in one body. Two other rows reach exaltation: Virgo rising puts Saturn (5th and 6th) exalted in Libra, and Sagittarius rising puts Mars (5th and 12th) exalted in Capricorn. Aquarius rising is the weakest row - Mercury, lord of the 5th and 8th, debilitated in Pisces. Five Ascendants put the lord in an enemy sign.
Strength changes the reading
Because Sl. 50 has no internal condition, everything that qualifies it comes from outside the verse. Three factors are named by BPHS itself:
- Dignity. The chapter's closing rule ties the share of the result to strength; the engine's dignity label is the first thing to read.
- The second lordship. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 5th lord also owns the 8th; for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 12th; for Virgo, the 6th - all dusthanas. For Cancer and Capricorn it owns the 10th, an angle, making it a yogakaraka by Ch. 34 Sl. 13.
- Association. A planet in the 2nd is aspected from the 8th, and by Saturn from the 12th, Mars from the 11th or 9th, and Jupiter from the 10th or 6th (drishti). BPHS asks that association be weighed; it gives no numeric weight.
The planet's own nature is a separate layer. Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 calls Jupiter and Venus benefics, the Sun, Mars and Saturn malefics, Mercury neutral (taking the colour of its company) and the Moon mediocre in benefice. For a Taurus or Scorpio native the lord carrying Sl. 50 into the 2nd is Mercury or Jupiter; for Virgo or Libra it is Saturn; for Aries it is the Sun. The lordship is a trine lordship in every case, but the Saturn in the 2nd and Sun in the 2nd pages show how differently the texts describe those planets in the house of speech and family before any lordship is added.
Because the 2nd is a maraka house in Ch. 44, a few readers treat any lord placed there with caution. That classification concerns the timing of longevity in a separate calculation; it is not part of Sl. 50, and this page does not import it into the reading.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, Jupiter in Sagittarius
This chart is the first moment of the engine's deterministic search: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi. Anyone can enter it in the birth chart calculator. The Ascendant is Scorpio 28.81.
- With Scorpio rising, the 5th house is Pisces and the 2nd is Sagittarius. Jupiter rules both, so this is the "own house" row of the table.
- Jupiter is in Sagittarius at 27.83 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 1, in the 2nd. The engine marks it Own sign, and also combust.
- The Sun is in the same sign at 16.89. With Scorpio rising the Sun rules the 10th, so an angle lord and a trine lord sit together.
- No planet aspects the 2nd in this chart by the engine's whole-sign aspect rule.
Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 calls Jupiter auspicious for Vrischik Lagn, and names the Sun and Moon as yoga-karakas for it. Here a strong-by-sign Jupiter carrying two good lordships meets the 10th lord, and the engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga that includes the Sun and Jupiter. The qualification is the combustion flag: Jupiter is within the Sun's rays. Whether that pulls the Sl. 145-148 scale from "full" toward "half" is a judgement the text leaves to the reader.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 2nd house in 286, or 9.5%. This is a count of moments in the sample, not of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 2nd lord in the 5th house, is discussed above. If both occur the lords have exchanged signs (parivartana). The 5th lord one house earlier, in the 1st, brings scholarship and children with a miserly streak (Sl. 49); one house later, in the 3rd, Sl. 51 speaks of attachment to siblings and a tale-bearing, self-interested nature. Sl. 50 is the brightest of the three. For a planet-level view of the commonest benefic case, see Jupiter in the 2nd house.
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
- Look up the 5th lord in the table and check, in the birth chart calculator, whether it is in the 2nd sign.
- Read its dignity, its other house, any combustion and any planet sharing the 2nd.
Questions about the 5th lord in the 2nd
- What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 2nd house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 50: many sons and wealth, the head of a family, honourable, attached to the spouse and famous. The result is scaled by the planet's strength (Sl. 145-148).
- Is this a wealth yoga?
- BPHS does not name it as a yoga. It does call the 5th one of the two houses "specially for wealth" (Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7), and Sl. 50 lists wealth among the results. This app's yoga detector does not flag the placement by itself.
- Does a 5th lord in a maraka house cause harm?
- Ch. 44 treats the 2nd as a maraka house when timing longevity. Sl. 50 contains nothing adverse, and this app does not make longevity predictions.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
- On sign alone: Taurus and Scorpio (the lord in its own sign, ruling both houses), Virgo (Saturn exalted) and Sagittarius (Mars exalted). Aquarius gives Mercury debilitated.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 286 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.5%), a statement about moments, not people.
