In short

The 5th lord in the 3rd house moves the ruler of children and intelligence into the house of siblings, courage and personal effort. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 51 reads it as attachment to brothers and sisters together with a talkative, thrifty and self-absorbed streak. It is a mixed verse, and the planet's strength and second lordship decide how much of it the text would apply.

What the placement means

Each house has a lord, the planet ruling its sign. "The 5th lord in the 3rd house" means the planet ruling the 5th sign from the Ascendant stands in the 3rd sign. The business of the 5th - the mind's judgement, learning, children - is carried into the house of younger siblings, initiative and the work a person does with their own hands.

Counted from the 5th, the 3rd is the 11th house: the lord sits in the house of gain reckoned from its own. Counted from the Ascendant, it leaves a trine for a house the texts treat as weak at the start of life but growing over time, one of the upachayas.

The two houses involved

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona, read for children, intellect and merit. Its page covers the house in depth.

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is the house of co-born, valour, short journeys and effort. It is an upachaya (with the 6th, 10th and 11th), and BPHS Ch. 34 lists its owner among those that "give evil effects" by lordship - a statement about owning the 3rd, not about visiting it.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 51

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 51 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Sahaj, the native will be attached to his co-born, be a tale bearer and a miser and be always interested in his own work." Nothing in the verse speaks of children directly, which is unusual for the Putr series; the 5th lord seems to have left its own house's themes behind and taken on the 3rd's.

Each clause fits the 3rd house reading. The co-born are the 3rd's first signification. A "tale bearer" - someone who carries reports between people - matches the 3rd's association with messages and communication. Thrift and absorption in "his own work" match a house of personal effort. BPHS gives no reason; this is a reading of how the clauses line up, not a gloss from the text.

The reverse placement is gentler. Sl. 29 says that when Sahaj's lord is in Putr the native "will have sons and be virtuous", adding that a malefic joining or aspecting that lord brings "a formidable wife". The two directions show something general about Ch. 24: the house a lord moves into tends to colour the verse more than the house it comes from.

As always, Sl. 145-148 scale the verse by strength - full, half or a quarter of the effect - and add the results of any second house the planet rules, contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus have no verse for this placement.

Lordship versus placement

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 grades houses by what owning them does to a planet. The lord of a Kon - the 5th among them - "will give auspicious results"; any planet owning Sahaj, Ari or Labh "will give evil effects", and the text adds that within each group the significance rises in ascending order, which, read in house order, puts the 3rd first among the 3rd, 6th and 11th. None of that changes here, because the 5th lord does not acquire the 3rd's lordship by sitting in it. What Sl. 51 describes is a good lord working in a mild-to-difficult house, and the verse's mixture reads accordingly. The exception is a chart where the 5th lord happens also to rule a hard house itself, which the table below makes visible.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

From the engine's lordship table. The dignity column is the engine's rule applied without a chart (natural friendships only); in a real chart the temporary relationship can move a planet one tier. The last column is the planet's second house.

The 5th lord and the 3rd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

This is a placement where the planet is often uncomfortable: five Ascendants (Taurus to Virgo) put the 5th lord in an enemy sign, and Scorpio rising puts Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn. Two rows reverse that. Capricorn rising puts Venus - lord of the 5th and 10th, a yogakaraka by Ch. 34 Sl. 13 - exalted in Pisces; Pisces rising puts the Moon exalted in Taurus. Neither changes Sl. 51's wording, but by Sl. 145-148 they are the cases where the text would apply it most fully.

Strength changes the reading

A mixed verse raises the question of which half strength amplifies. BPHS does not split Sl. 51 into good and bad halves; it simply says the whole effect arrives in proportion to strength. What it does provide are three modifiers that apply to every lord:

  • Dignity, read from the engine's dignity label, sets the full / half / quarter scale.
  • The second lordship: Virgo rising makes the 5th lord also the 6th lord; Gemini and Sagittarius the 12th; Leo and Aquarius the 8th. Cancer and Capricorn add the 10th, Libra the 4th. Sl. 145-148 says both lordships act.
  • Association: the 3rd is aspected from the 9th, by Mars from the 12th or 8th, by Jupiter from the 11th or 7th, by Saturn from the 1st or 6th (drishti).

The house itself also matters to how readers weigh this. A planet in an upachaya is classically read as able to improve with time, which is one reason readers treat the 3rd more mildly than the dusthanas. BPHS Ch. 24 does not say so in this verse, and this page does not add it to Sl. 51. Planet-level descriptions are on the Saturn in the 3rd and Mercury in the 3rd pages.

Worked example: Virgo rising, Saturn in Scorpio

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart: 24 February 1985, 21:42 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Virgo 28.04. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Virgo rising the 5th house is Capricorn and the 6th is Aquarius; Saturn rules both, so this lord carries a trine and a dusthana together.
  • Saturn is in Scorpio at 4.37 degrees, Anuradha pada 1, in the 3rd. The engine marks it Enemy sign. It is neither retrograde nor combust.
  • No other planet shares the 3rd, and none aspects it by the engine's whole-sign rule.
  • The 3rd lord, Mars, is in Pisces in the 7th, so the two lords are not exchanging signs.

Read with Sl. 145-148, an enemy-sign Saturn carrying both a good lordship and the 6th is the middling-to-weak case, and the two lordships pull against each other. Ch. 34 Sl. 31-32, the Kanya Lagn verse, names Mars, Jupiter and the Moon as malefics and Mercury and Venus as auspicious; it does not mention Saturn. One geometric detail: Saturn's special aspect from the 3rd falls on the 5th, Capricorn, its own sign. Ch. 24 does not comment on a lord aspecting its own house, so the page notes it and leaves it. The engine's yoga detector finds Malavya and Vimala Yoga in this chart, neither involving Saturn.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 3rd house in 261, or 8.7% - a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 5th, is Sl. 29, quoted above; both together are an exchange of signs (parivartana). The previous placement, the 5th lord in the 2nd, is among the brightest Putr verses (Sl. 50). The next, the 5th lord in the 4th (Sl. 52), names happiness, a mother's blessing and a minister's or preceptor's role. The 3rd sits between two warmly read placements.

  1. Find the rising sign with the Lagna calculator; read the 5th lord from the table.
  2. In the birth chart calculator, check whether it stands in the 3rd sign.
  3. Note its dignity, its second lordship and what joins or aspects it.

Questions about the 5th lord in the 3rd

What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 3rd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 51: the native will be attached to siblings, a tale-bearer, miserly and always interested in their own work. The chapter scales this by the lord's strength.
Does the verse say anything about children?
No. Unlike most of the Putr series, Sl. 51 speaks only of siblings and temperament. The reverse placement, Sl. 29, does mention sons.
Is the 3rd a bad house for the 5th lord?
BPHS calls ownership of the 3rd evil; it does not say a trine lord placed there is spoiled. The 3rd is an upachaya. The planet's dignity and second lordship are what the text asks you to weigh.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
On sign alone, Capricorn (Venus exalted, also 10th lord) and Pisces (the Moon exalted). Scorpio rising gives Jupiter debilitated.
How common is this placement?
261 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 8.7%. That is a property of time, not of people.
