In short
The 5th lord in the 4th house places the ruler of intelligence and children in the house of home, mother and inner contentment. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 52 reads it as happiness, a mother's blessing, wealth and intelligence, with the standing of a king, minister or preceptor. A trine lord in an angle, it is also one of the relations Ch. 34 counts as yoga-forming.
What the placement means
The 5th house lord is the planet that rules the 5th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 4th sign, it takes the 5th house's matters - judgement, learning, children, the merit of past action - into the house of the mother, the home, land, vehicles and the settled state of mind the texts call sukha.
Counted from the 5th, the 4th is the 12th: the lord sits one sign behind its own house. Counted from the Ascendant, it moves from a trine into an angle. That second fact is the one BPHS builds on, because Parashara's rules for royal yogas begin with exactly this kind of crossing between trines and angles.
The two houses involved
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona, the house of children, intelligence and devotional practice in the texts. Its page lists the full set.
The 4th house (Sukha Bhava), which BPHS calls Bandhu, is a kendra. It is read for the mother, the dwelling, property, conveyances and emotional ease. Its page sets out those readings.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 52
Sl. 52 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Bandhu Bhava, the native will be happy, endowed with maternal happiness, wealth and intelligence and be a king, or a minister, or a preceptor." It is wholly favourable and carries no condition about malefics.
The three roles at the end are worth reading carefully. A king, a minister and a preceptor are three kinds of standing that rest on judgement rather than on force - rule, counsel and teaching. Intelligence is a 5th-house quality; happiness and the mother are 4th-house ones. The verse unites them and then names positions in which a sound mind brings rank. That reading of the three roles is this page's, not a commentary in the corpus.
The reverse direction is also favourable. Sl. 41, Bandhu's lord in Putr, gives a person who is happy, liked by all, devoted to Vishnu, virtuous, honourable and with self-earned wealth. Where Sl. 52 stresses position, Sl. 41 stresses temperament and devotion - which fits the lord of the home travelling into the house of mantra and merit.
The Kendra-Kona rule
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 lists the relations between angle lords and trine lords that "cause a Yog", and the simplest is "a Lord of a Kon is in a Kendr". The 5th lord in the 4th meets it. Sl. 15 adds the exception: a lord that also owns an evil house does not produce the yoga by such a relation alone. For the yogas of this type that the engine computes, see Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga; the engine's test is narrower (the two lords conjunct or in mutual aspect), so the placement by itself is not flagged.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 still frame everything: full, half or a quarter of the effect by strength, and a planet with two houses giving both results. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus give no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship table, with the dignity rule applied to the planet in the 4th sign without a chart, and the planet's second house.
| Ascendant | 5th lord | 4th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun | Cancer | Friendly sign | none |
| Taurus | Mercury | Leo | Friendly sign | 2nd |
| Gemini | Venus | Virgo | Debilitated | 12th |
| Cancer | Mars | Libra | Neutral | 10th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Scorpio | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Sagittarius | Neutral | 6th |
| Libra | Saturn | Capricorn | Own sign | 4th |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Aquarius | Neutral | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Pisces | Friendly sign | 12th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Aries | Neutral | 10th |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Taurus | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Pisces | Moon | Gemini | Friendly sign | none |
Libra rising is the textbook case: Saturn rules both the 4th and the 5th, so it is the yogakaraka of Ch. 34 Sl. 13, and here it simply stands in its own sign Capricorn, the 4th. Gemini rising is the weak case: Venus, lord of the 5th and 12th, is debilitated in Virgo. Most of the remaining rows are friendly or neutral; none is exalted. Leo (Jupiter, also 8th lord), Aquarius (Mercury, also 8th), Virgo (Saturn, also 6th) and Gemini and Sagittarius (also 12th) are the rows where Sl. 15's exception applies.
Strength changes the reading
Sl. 52 itself has no condition, so a reader could take it as a flat promise. BPHS does not intend that: the closing verses of Ch. 24 make every one of its 144 readings conditional on the lord's strength and on the other house it owns, and Ch. 34 makes the yoga reading conditional on the planet not also owning an evil house. Three things are therefore checked before Sl. 52 is applied to a chart:
- Dignity. The engine's dignity label locates the planet on Sl. 145-148's full / half / quarter scale.
- Second lordship. A 5th lord that also owns a dusthana (6th, 8th, 12th) is where Ch. 34 Sl. 15 withholds the yoga; one that also owns an angle (Cancer's and Capricorn's 10th, Libra's 4th) is where Sl. 13 strengthens it.
- Company and aspects. The 4th receives the 7th aspect from the 10th, and special aspects from Mars (in the 1st or 9th), Jupiter (in the 12th or 8th) and Saturn (in the 2nd or 7th) - see drishti.
Natural character adds a layer the lordship does not erase. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says benefics owning angles lose some benefic quality, malefics owning angles lose some malefic quality; but here the planet owns a trine and only visits the angle, so the trine reading stands. The Jupiter in the 4th and Saturn in the 4th pages show how far apart two of the commonest lords are when described as planets in the house.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, Jupiter in Aquarius
This chart came from the engine's deterministic search and can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 19 April 1986, 22:04 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Scorpio 18.17.
- With Scorpio rising, the 5th house is Pisces and the 2nd is Sagittarius, both ruled by Jupiter. The 4th house is Aquarius.
- Jupiter is in Aquarius at 19.58 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 4, in the 4th. The engine marks it Friendly sign, not retrograde, not combust.
- The Moon is in Leo at 2.02, in the 10th, so it and Jupiter face each other across the 4th-10th axis and aspect each other.
- The 4th lord, Saturn, is in the 1st, Scorpio, at 15.23.
Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 calls Jupiter and the Moon auspicious for Vrischik Lagn, and Jupiter's second house here is the 2nd, not a dusthana, so Sl. 15's exception does not apply. The engine's yoga detector, run on this chart, reports Gaj Kesari Yoga for Jupiter and the Moon in mutual angles, and Chandradhi (Adhi) Yoga among others. Those flags come from Jupiter's relation to the Moon, not from the 5th-lord placement itself; they sit beside Sl. 52, they are not part of it.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 4th house in 268, or 8.9%. That describes moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 4th lord in the 5th (Sl. 41), is quoted above; if both lords sit in each other's signs, the exchange (parivartana) is itself on Ch. 34's list of yoga-forming relations. One house earlier, the 5th lord in the 3rd gives a mixed verse about siblings and thrift (Sl. 51); one house later, the 5th lord in its own house (Sl. 53) is the only Putr verse that splits by benefic and malefic association. The other angle placements - the 5th lord in the 10th above all, which BPHS calls a Raj Yog outright - make useful comparisons.
- Find the Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and read off the 5th lord.
- Check in the birth chart calculator whether it occupies the 4th sign.
- Note its dignity, whether its second house is a dusthana, and any planet joining or aspecting the 4th.
Questions about the 5th lord in the 4th
- What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 4th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 52: the native will be happy, blessed with a mother's happiness, wealth and intelligence, and will be a king, a minister or a preceptor. It is scaled by the lord's strength (Sl. 145-148).
- Is it a Raja Yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 counts a trine lord in an angle as forming a yoga, unless the planet also owns an evil house (Sl. 15). This app's Kendra-Kona detector requires conjunction or mutual aspect between the lords, so it does not flag the placement alone.
- Is the 4th being the 12th from the 5th a problem?
- BPHS Sl. 52 does not raise it; the verse is entirely favourable. This page does not add a loss reading the text does not make.
- Which Ascendant is the classic case?
- Libra: Saturn rules the 4th and 5th, so it is a yogakaraka sitting in its own sign. Gemini gives the weakest row, Venus debilitated in Virgo.
- Does this placement say anything about my mother?
- Sl. 52 names "maternal happiness" among its results. BPHS reads that as one effect among several, scaled by strength; this app does not convert it into a statement about any particular relationship.
- How common is it?
- 268 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.9%. That is a count of moments in the engine's sample, not of people.
